Stress is the feeling of being under pressure, with symptoms including anger and anxiety, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, breathlessness and chest pains. People who are under prolonged stress are at greater risk of health problems like high blood pressure and heart attacks.

As a people, we’re under greater stress than ever.

We live in a stress-filled environment that either breaks us or makes us cope with life's mundane ordeals.

We cannot avoid stress. Situations arise on a day to day basis which make physical mental and emotional demands on us. There may be decisions that need to be made, deadlines that need to be met, lessons to be learned. It doesn? It matter whether we are at work or at play. Stress is the driving force that keeps us on our toes and ensures that we push to be the best we can be

After bereavement and divorce, work is the third biggest cause of stress. Over half of all workers believe that
stress is damaging their health. As well as impacting on people’s health and wellbeing, it can also damage social lives and relationships.

  1. 1. Makati Bible Club May 21, 2014 Presented by: ROMMEL G. RAMOS rommelgramos07@gmail.com
  2. 2.  Take the Stress Test.  Answer and compute your Total Score.
  3. 3.  Stress is the body’s automatic response to any physical or mental demand placed on it.  Adrenaline is a chemical naturally produced in our body as a response to stress .
  4. 4.  Canon proposed that the stress response (fast) was a fight-or- flight response marked by the outpouring of epinephrine and norepinephrine from the inner adrenal glands, increasing heart and respiration rates, mobilizing sugar and fat, and dulling pain.
  5. 5.  The hypothalamus and the pituitary gland also respond to stress (slow) by triggering the outer adrenal glands to secrete glucocorticoids (cortisol).
  6. 6. Eustress = Positive stress Stress in these circumstances is pleasurable even though it involves placing physical and mental stress on the body. Examples: Exercise, successful completion of a challenging task. Results: Enabled concentration, increased performance, motivation and energy
  7. 7. Distress = Negative stress The type of stress usually referred to in everyday conversation; “I’m stressed out!” Examples: Heavy workload, infrequent rest breaks, long work hours; hectic and routine tasks that have little inherent meaning, little sense of control over outcomes. Results: Loss of motivation, reduced effectiveness, physical, mental, and behavioral problems.
  8. 8. What are some of the things that cause stress for people? These things are called “STRESSORS”. Stressors are different from one person to another. Situations, activities, and relationships that cause ‘trauma’ to one’s physical, emotional, or psychological self Give examples.
  9. 9. 1. Physical - Weight gain/loss - Unexpected hair loss - Heart palpitations - High blood pressure 2. Emotional - Mood swings - Anxiety - Can lead to depression • Can also lead to unhealthy coping strategies (i.e. alcohol, drugs, etc). Burn-out!
  10. 10.  Physical health gets better -more energy & stamina  Emotions stabilized -positive attitude -hopeful/happier  Ability to focus improved -able to learn & achieve

  16. 16.  Give up the “Blame Game”.  Reframe the situation.  Don’t ignore emotions but also don’t emphasize them.  Plan, clarify, and find direction.  Stay focused.
  17. 17.  Listen to soft music.  Take on a hobby or a pet.  Rely on friends and family for support.  Focus on the positive.  Look for ways to have fun.
  18. 18.  Exercise.  Eat healthy. Cut down on sugar, caffeine, processed foods.  Help others.  Spend quiet time every day. Celebrate “me time”.  Be thankful.  Don’t smoke.  Seek help if you feel overwhelmed.  Turn to prayer.  Seek GOD.

  20. 20.  Does it seem like every day is a bad day?  Would you characterize most of your life as “stressful”?  Do you feel like keeping up your commitments is just a waste of energy?  Do you feel alone in the world?  Do you find your daily work overwhelming or boring?  Do you wonder if anything you do makes a difference?  Are you increasingly cynical about where your life is headed?
  21. 21.  1.) Rest in God. Learn to trust in His faithfulness. God is faithful and his covenant is a covenant of love. He will not forsake us and will treat us better than we deserve just as a loving parent treats a rebellious child better than s/he deserves. But our hearts must be tuned to honor God as God, not as just a good luck charm or a weekly guest into our otherwise busy lives.
  22. 22.  Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
  23. 23.  2.) You need to slow down.  You’ve worked too hard and simply adjusting your workload will not stop the burnout.  You need to actually take a break—make time to rest and heal. Rest & relaxation isneeded.
  24. 24.  A Psalm of David.  The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
  25. 25.  3.) Count your blessings. Take stock of all wonderful blessings you now possess.
  26. 26.  A Psalm of David. Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.  Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:  Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;  Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;  Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
  27. 27.  4.) Learn to live one day at a time.
  28. 28.  “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. “  -JESUS
  29. 29.  5.) Pray and don’t worry. Praying and worrying cannot come together.  Stop worrying, if something concerns you, do something about it. If you can’t do anything about it, let it go.
  30. 30.  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
  31. 31.  6.) Think on these (godly) things.
  32. 32.  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
  33. 33.  7.) Listen to God. God speaks thru His Word – the Bible.  He is patiently waiting for you to come to His Son Jesus.
  34. 34.  “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” -JESUS
  35. 35.  “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” -JESUS
