What is a Group Discussion?A GD is a methodology used by an organization to gauge whether thecandidate has certain personality traits and/or skills that it desires in itsmembers.In this methodology, the group of candidates is given a topic or asituation, given a few minutes to think about the same, and then asked todiscuss the it among themselves for 15-20 minutes.

Why a Group Discussion?The reason why institutes put thecandidates through a Group discussionand an interview, after testing yourtechnical and conceptual skills in anexam, is to get to know you as a personand gauge how well you will fit in theirinstitute.The Group discussion tests how youfunction as a part of a team.

  6. 6. What Not To Do1. Avoid constant objections to other people’sarguments2. Say no to a pessimistic approach3. Don’t insult other people, criticize in adecent manner4. Dump your jealousy or animosity5. No irrelevant stories/personal experiences6. Don’t be an attention seeker

KEY TO SUCCESSThe GD is to check how you (i)behave, participate andcontribute in a group, (ii) howmuch importance do you giveto the group objective as wellas your own, (iii) how well doyou listen to viewpoints ofothers and; (iv) how open-minded you are in acceptingviews contrary to your own.The aspects which make up aGD are verbal communication,non-verbal behavior,conformation to norms,decision-making ability andcooperation. You should try tobe as true as possible to theseaspects.
