ANDALUSIA'S FLAG
The composition of three horizontal stripes of the same
size (green, white and green) that form the flag was
approved by the Asamblea de Ronda in 1918
The green color represents the Andalusian landscape, and
the white the values
of purity and hope for the future.
Above the columns there is an arch with a Latin legend
“Dominator Hercules Fundator”.
According to legend, Hercules traveled to Eritea, one of the
islands where Cádiz and San Fernando are currently
located. This feat was commemorated with the lifting in
both cities of two columns that separated the European
continent from the African. The lions represent the strength
of animal instincts together with the youth of Andalusia.

THE 12 LABORS OF HERCULES
5. 10TH LABOR: OBTAIN THE CATTLE OF
THE THREE-BODIED GIANT GERYON
Geryon was a three-bodied and four-winged giant
who lived on the island of Erytheia in the westernmost
reach of the earth-encircling river Okeanos. He
possessed a fabulous herd of cattle whose coats were
stained red by the light of the sunset. Herakles was
sent to fetch these as one of his labours.
6. 10TH LABOR: OBTAIN THE CATTLE OF
THE THREE-BODIED GIANT GERYON
Heracles reached the island by sailing across
the Okeanos in a golden cup-boat borrowed
from the sun-god Helios. There he encountered
and kill the shepherd Eurytion, the two-headed
guard dog Orthros, and finally Geryon. With this
work completed the hero herded the cattle into
his boat and led them back to the Greek
Peloponnese.
7. According to the Andalusia's legend,
the mighty half-god Heracles didn't
kill Geryon.
Instead, he ran away and when he
was far enough he pull apart Europe
from Africa, so that Geryon couldn't
go after Heracles or the Greeks. That
´s how the Atlantic Ocean was
connected to the Mediterranean Sea.

THE THREE-BODIED GIANT GERYON
8. PILLARS OF HERCULES
The Pillars of Hercules is a geographical limit
located in the Strait of Gibraltar and
symbolized the end of the known world.
Mythological origin, it was for Mediterranean
navigators the frontier to the unknown. The
origin of the name is Roman, "Columnas
Herculis", with the sentence "Non Terrae Plus
Ultra", whose significated there is "no land
beyond", which indicated the border of the
continent. The two columns identified one the
rock of Gibraltar (north column) and the other
in Ceuta or Morocco (south column).
