Ch 24 3 solar energy & wind

 1. 1. Solar Energy & Wind 24.3
 2. 2. Energy in the Atmosphere

Solar Energy = energy from the sun

Some solar energy that reaches the atmosphere is reflected back

Some is absorbed by atmosphere

Some is absorbed by Earth surface

 3. 3. Energy Transfer & Atmosphere

Energy is transferred in 3 ways

Radiation—Heat in all directions

Convection— currents of H & C air

Conduction—Heat

with direct contact

Greenhouse Effect = some energy in atmosphere is reflected back to Earth surface

 4. 5. Wind

The Flow of air from High Pressure to Low Pressure

Winds are cause by differences in Air Pressure and Temperature

 5. 6. Local Winds ( Sea Breeze )

Sea Breeze—Day—Air above land warms & rises, cool air from water moves in & replaces warm land air

 6. 8. Local Winds ( Land Breeze )

Land Breeze—Air above water warms and rises, cool air from land moves in & replaces rising warm water air

 7. 10. Global Winds

GW = winds that blow over long distances from specific directions

Coriolis Effect = wind that are bent Because the Earth is spinning

 8. 12. Jet Stream—high speed air flow
 9. 13. Prevailing winds

Polar Easterlies: From 60-90 degrees latitude.

Prevailing Westerlies: From 30-60 degrees latitude

Tropical Easterlies: From 0-30 degrees latitude (aka Trade Winds).

 10. 14. Monsoons

Monsoon = Large Scale Land & Sea Breeze

(Summer (sb) = Rainy Season—air moves from Ocean to land)

(Winter (lb) = Dry Season—Air moves land onto water)
