Ch 22 4 theory of plate tectonics

 1. 1. Theory of Plate Tectonics Note Guide 22.4 Plate Tectonics
 2. 2. Theory of Continental Drift

Proposed by Alfred Wegner

The Theory:

Earth once had a single landmass that broke up into large pieces, which have drifted apart

 3. 3. Pangaea

The name of the large land mass was Pangaea =

Means all Earth

 4. 4. Evidence for Continental Drift:

Fossils – Certain plants and animals were found in Africa and South America that are similar

Rocks – Put down from Continental glaciers have similar deposits from warmer climates

 5. 5. Evidence for Continental Drift:

Salts / Coal / Limestone –

are deposits that show slow change in climate cause by Continental Drift

Example:

Salt deposits found in cooler climates

Coals forms in warmer / swampy climates

Limestone forms in tropical climates

 6. 6. Theory of Ocean Floor Spreading

Scientists once thought: The Ocean Floor was Solid

But because of the great deal of volcanic activity—Lava.

Lava: forms new ocean floor which causes the ocean floor to move or spread out and it will carry the continent with it .

 7. 7. Picture of Ocean floor spreading
 8. 8. Plate Tectonics

Tie the theories of Continental Drift & Ocean Floor Spreading together

Used to explain :

How the Earth evolved and developed

The Theory helps to understand Mountains, Volcanoes, and Earth Quakes

 9. 9. Plate Tectonics

It also gives scientists an insight into how and why life on Earth Evolved

It also helps people to understand the past and to predict the future

 10. 10. Plates

Plate = The moving irregular shaped slabs that fit together like paving stones to form the surface of the Earth

Plates carry the continents and are edged by trenches and ridges

 11. 11. Tectonics

Tectonics = Branch of Geology that deals with the movement that shapes the Earths Crust .
