transformation. If we don’t transform our businesses, other
people will, other pharmacists that may come from other coun-
tries, or they may come from within. As pharmacy owners and
as leaders in our communities it is time to stake our relevance. I
believe that every one of you had a vision of what the pharmacy
you were going to own was going to look like when you came
out of university, as did I. Is our pharmacy right now what it
looked like when we envisaged it? I would say no. But I believe
that every one of you deserves the opportunity to build that
pharmacy without limits, without boundaries and without the
financial constraints that may have held you back until now.
I chose pharmacy as my profession because…
An exercise for you now. I would love you to spend five minutes
on this. Make sure that you are away from the kids, away from
the dispensary, and away from any distraction. Grab yourself a
cup of coffee, a pen and some paper, and cast your mind back to
when you first started in pharmacy. Write down, “I chose phar-
macy as my profession because…” List as many reasons as you
can think of. Do that now.

Travel Industry then and now Then: go to travel agency, appointment with advisor, mountains of brochures, books (reflect this in images), stressed unhappy lady/man burdened by this process Images of family holiday Now: Image of someone on a mobile device on a train or at a café booking a holiday, travel apps, happy person (man – my audience will be male dominant) But… the process has remained the same, it has made the experience quicker, more efficient, and removed all the waiting time.. Newsagencies/Newsagents Industry then and now Role: to distribute information, news, current affairs, social happenings Then: go to newsagency or have delivered, images of a newsagency location with mountains of newspapers, magazines, periodicals, journals Images business men who look confused at all the choices, image of a man who is struggling to hold a large newspaper Now: Image of a man on a mobile device on a train or at a café, news apps/twitter/youtube, happy, relaxed, and in-control, image of the ability to communicate with anyone via twitter (news sources) Speed of Twitter youtube video But… the process has remained the same, it has made the experience quicker, news updates immediately, more efficient, and removed all the waiting time.. (over the next day ask yourself that question, remove all boundaries and financial constraints) -use the notes section in the back of the brochure My why? (can be multiple slides…) Government reducing payment levels and income (supporting image) Landlords raising rents (supporting image) Banks getting worried and getting tougher on pharmacy with a negative outlook Withdrawal of patient services to reduce costs (eg. Delivery services, and the number of pharmacists in each pharmacy) leading to declining levels of customer service (unhappy patients) Supermarkets stocking toothpaste, cosmetics, shampoo, medicines, wound dressingsThe proliferation of discount pharmacies (image of a yellow box pharmacy with a 50% off symbol on the front) – Did anyone leave university wanting to be a cut price retailer or a health care professional?
