  2. 2. Cover Image: Zen Trail, Adirondacks, NY • Canon 1Ds Mk III, 16mm, 3.2 sec, f/16, ISO 200 For the bestBeyond the Lens PhotoJournal | Issue 2- Fall/Winter 2010 experience, please switch to full-screen mode if didn’t switch automatically.Welcome to the second issue of the Beyond the Lens Photo Journal, where I share special images, thoughts, quotes, and mypassion for nature and photography. My travels over the past year have allowed me to photograph in a wide variety of locations, some familiar, and many new. For methe location where a photograph is made is of much less importance than whether an images creates a feeling in the viewer.Perhaps due to my own feelings andexperiences, these are often my most successfulimages. Without inspiration, I am just takingpictures, where the scene is presented at facevalue. But when a special moment occurs, that iswhen I feel I am truly creating something newand worthwhile. So much of my time time is spent exploring, discovering, and really becoming intimate withnature and the many ways it teaches me to bepatient, observant, and humble. I’ve learned thisis time well spent - I know of no other way to feelmore alive.Take a moment to come closer to nature, feelgood about life, and appreciate the simplemiracles happening each and every day. 5. 5. Plum Point, NY • Canon 1Ds Mk III, 21mm , 64 sec, f/14, ISO 100“The true gestation period of a photograph is not the seconds, orfractions of seconds, of exposure, but rather the years the photographerhas spent on a journey that is both physical and intellectual beforereaching the point when the shutter was opened.” -David Ward 5
  6. 6. Sky at Dawn, Cobscook Bay, ME• Canon 1DS Mk III, 100mm, 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 800 6
  7. 7. Skyscapes, Cape Breton, Nova ScotiaClouds are the soul of the sky, and with special light can completely transform a scene into moment of introspection, humility, andsheer joy. Such are the feelings I felt while I waited in the early morning hours on the rocky shores of Cape Breton. I have rarely felt thesoul stirred this way, but it was both memorable and fortuitous...a reminder of how good it is to be alive.• Canon 1Ds Mk III, 24mm, 1/13 sec, f/16, ISO 100 7
  8. 8. Heron Marsh, Paul Smiths, NY• Canon 1Ds Mk III, 21mm, 1/6 sec, f/16, ISO 400 8
  9. 9. Song of the Sea, Cape Breton, Nova ScotiaWe are on this earth for a brief moment, yet there is so much to appreciate in the simple yet powerful motion of the sea at the shore.Slowing down time is a favorite technique for me, and here I have tried to describe visually what happens over minutes, hours, daysand months. When viewed through a different perspective, we can appreciate how important our time is, and how little time we canafford to waste away from beauty and serenity.• Canon 1Ds Mk III, 19mm, 4 min, f/16, ISO 100 “Music is an avenue that enlivens my feelings. It feeds, it nourishes my emotional system. And if I have that, as my assistant, then what I see takes on something from the heart." - Paul Caponigro 9
  10. 10. Morning Light, Hudson ValleySimplicity is one of the key elements I try to achieve in every image. I had visualized this scene for many months, but my attempts at capturing italways seemed to elude me. On this particular morning, I tried once again, making the long hike from the river up to this barren rock and was greetedby light, moment, and sheer joy.• Canon 1Ds Mk III, 22mm, 1/6 sec, f/16, ISO 200 (3 image panorama) 10
  11. 11. Jordan Pond, Acadia National Park• Canon 1DS Mk III, 32mm, 10 sec, f/14, ISO100“A well-rehearsed performance willgo without a hitch. An explorer seeksthe hitches, because hitches are thefissures and chasms that help us leapforward.”- Seth Godin 11
