Getting started: What is Unity?
Let’s ask David Helgason, one of the founders of Unity.

EMBODIEDVISION: CREATINGVR CONTENT / ROBINDELANGE.COM / 2015
Getting started: Why use Unity?
• Not only for games, also for other interactive
environments
• Very easy multiple platform output. No restriction
in mobile apps
• Integration with devices as Rift, Cardboard, Kinect
and Razer Hydra
• Integration with 3D modelling software:
Blender/3ds Max/Maya/….
EMBODIEDVISION: CREATINGVR CONTENT / ROBINDELANGE.COM / 2015
Getting started: Why use Unity?
• Active community of millions
• Thousands of models, scripts and plugins via
Asset Store
• Many tutorials and guides available
• Nice combination of 3D environment and
scripting
• Environment meant for collaboration between
programmers, designers and everything in
between

Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome everybody to this second workshop. Let’s review what we did last week. The program of today consists of an introduction to the practical skills you will use to finish your project. Last week we set a theoretical framework in which we compared Virtual Reality with cinema. Next week I’m going to explain about how to create your own VR experience. I’ll give an introduction to Unity3D and explain about making spherical photos and videos.
  2. Let’s first look how one of the founders of Unity answers that question 3D physics engine and environment to develop games Almost industry standard
  3. Let’s first look how one of the founders of Unity answers that question 3D physics engine and environment to develop games Almost industry standard
  4. Why would you use Unity? You’ve already learned Processing, Max MSP, Open Frameworks and who knows what else. I’m going to be a fanboy
  5. I’ll quickly show a few projects I have done in Unity, to give you an idea of the possibilities outside of gaming I found Unity to be a really useful environment and started to use it for other projects as well.
  6. After doing these projects I realized that Unity was a tool that could be very useful to many Media Tech students. That’s why I decided to do this workshop, hopefully you’re going to use it for some interesting projects.
  7. One of the reasons Unity is growing fastly, is because it is the most-used platform for creating Virtual Reality content Vertigo shot in VR
  8. Show photos and videos online
  9. The content of this first workshop gives good input for your essay assignment. Form a statement or question and argue Phrase a precise question and answer it, or explain how this question could be answered Can you zoom in VR? How does editing in VR work? For which desired goal will editing work best in VR? Rhytmic? Shock? Contrast? According to Andre Bazin film has the unique capability to capture objective reality. How does VR relate to this? How to reach continuity in VR, an essential part of telling a narrative Will the monkey illusion work in VR as well? Subtitles in VR
