LHA-6: Basic Parameters

Published on

This slideshow provides some basic parameters for the new class of amphibious assault ships being built in Mississippi.

New ships like the Ford and the America class with the new aviation and C5ISR assets on board are anchors to shaping new capabilities and new approaches.

As one senior Marine commented: "I think the ship with the new aviation assets is a game changer. You will put a 1.5 squadron aboard the LHA-6 and you will carry with them a significant deep strike capability and range with the F-35 Bravo. Then you can plus that up with other USMC assets such as the KC-130J or USAF tanker assets in support of Bravo and other aviation operations off of this ship. You will have a capability, which the ARG-MEU has never had of doing significantly deep air strikes."

LHA-6: Basic Parameters

  1. 1. LHA 6 Basic Parameters
  2. 2. LHA 6 General Considerations• LHA 6 is a mod-repeat of LHD 8 – Gas Turbine/Diesel-Electric Propulsion – 4160V Electrical distribution system very similar to LHD 8• LHA 6 hangar is significantly larger than LHD 1-8• Aviation shops and storerooms generally larger than LHD (details on subsequent slides) – Relocated to well deck volume• LHA 6 cargo capacity greater than LHD 1-8• LHA 6 JP-5 capacity greater than LHD 1-8• LHA 6 vehicle capability less than LHD 1-8• LHA 6 has no well deck = no LCAC or LCU 2
  3. 3. Changes from LHD 1 Class Arrangements HANGAR DECK EXTENDED MEDICAL RESIZED HANGAR HIGH HAT ENLARGED FORWARD AND AFT AND ONE ADDED FOR AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE HANGAR VEHICLE STOW MMR AMR MMR WELL DECK LOWER VEHICLESTERN GATE & SUBDIVIDED SUBDIVIDEDMCHRY DELETED MMR: Main Machinery Room AMR WITH A/C PLANT AMR: Auxiliary Machinery Room ADDITIONAL JP 5 TANKS (BALLAST TANK CONVERSION) • Increased aircraft spotting factors for future Marine Corps aircraft as well as larger logistic footprint required hangar deck expansion and subsequent relocation of AVCAL (aviation test equipment, tools, parts etc.) and maintenance shops to the former well deck area • Removal of well deck allowed for increased aviation fuel capacity through conversion of ballast tanks to JP-5 tanks •Additional magazine protection added 3
  4. 4. Vehicle Stowage• LHA 6 vehicle deck is very similar to the LHD 1 Class Upper Vehicle deck• Generally, any vehicle which fits in LHD Upper Vehicle will fit in LHA 6, except: – Without a well deck, there is no ability to off-load a vehicle which cannot be airlifted – All vehicles must be loaded through the port/starboard side port doors (same size as LHA 1 Class)• The LHD 1 Class Lower Vehicle deck has been subdivided into other spaces on LHA 6 – Not available for vehicle stowage 4
  5. 5. Fuel Capacity• DFM – No change from LHD 8• JP-5 - 1.3 M gallons• MOGAS – 110 gallons 5
  6. 6. Accommodations No change from LHD 5-8•Crew and embarked staff 1204•Troop 1686 – Troop surge 184 6
