  2. 2. What is Social Media?     <ul><li>Traditional Media vs. Social Media Traditional media is, well, traditional. TV, magazines, radio, newspapers, etc. Social media is media that users engage with socially. Facebook is social media because you talk with other users directly. (As opposed to just reading the paper by yourself.) Social Media is also called New Media Examples of social media are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Quora, but don't forget your blog or other forms of new media </li></ul>

Claim Your Real Estate     <ul><ul><li>All forms of social media use a username and brand name. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Even if you don't plan to participate in social media, it is vital that you go claim your space. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Do you want your competition to own ? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Social media is just as important as patent or trademark to your brand. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Start with Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube and then go local with Places, Foursquare, etc. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>You may have to complete more than a few steps to claim a place. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Don't forget about industry specific social media like Yelp (for restaurants). </li></ul></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul>

(If you don't already do it, create customer personas for each of your customers.) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>How do you sell product? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>How much time do you have? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>What are your strengths? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Read your industry trade magazines for specifics. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Look at what your competitors are doing. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Ask other business owners. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>Don't try to make a plan before getting all this information! </li></ul>

How to Start     <ul><li>1.  Have a basic web site, and make sure it's current, has everything it needs to attract customers and you can update it often. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>2.  Unless you absolutely cannot create content for a blog, get a blog started and update it once a week or so. This is your foundation of content to share on social media. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>3.  Get a Facebook page established for your business. Update it once a day. </li></ul><ul><li>  </li></ul><ul><li>4.  Claim your business name on every social media platform you can identify. </li></ul>
