Prophecy fulfilled probability

Easter is a special time to focus teaching on the historical events most significant to Christianity. There would be no Christians if Jesus didn't die for us and then rise from the dead to prove that He can give us eternal life.

Prophecy fulfilled probability

 1. 1. Facts, Prophecies Fulfilled, and Probability Easter 2011
 2. 2. Historical Facts of the Resurrection of Jesus

What kind of data do we have?

Most scholars agree, or at least cannot adequately refute, the credibility of the 4 books, Matthew , Mark , Luke and John , as reliable accounts of historical events. In addition, there is much supporting archeological evidence and there are other historical books of the period, most notably Josephus .

 3. 3. Historical Facts of the Resurrection of Jesus

What are the “facts”?

There are at least 12 facts that critical scholars will admit. The vast majority of scholars will give you more than these, but there are at least 12 facts virtually every scholar will admit.

With the exception of the empty tomb, virtually all critical scholars accept the following list as historical, and most of them will even grant the empty tomb.

http://www.ankerberg.com/Articles/_PDFArchives/editors-choice/EC3W0302.pdf

 4. 4. 12 Just Historical Facts

1. Jesus was a real man who died by crucifixion.

2. His dead body was buried.

3. His death caused the Disciples to despair and lose hope, believing His life had ended. Their leader and best friend died very suddenly.

4. Many scholars* believe that the tomb in which Jesus was buried was discovered to be empty just a few days later.

* This is the most challenged fact.

 5. 5. 12 Just Historical Facts

5. The Disciples had experiences that they believed were literal appearances of the risen Jesus. They really thought Jesus appeared to them in the flesh.

6. The experiences transformed the Disciples from fearful doubters, afraid to be identified with Jesus, into bold preachers of His death and resurrection.

7. The resurrection was the focus of preaching in the early Church. Paul said and wrote that the death, burial, resurrection of Jesus was, “of first importance”.

8. This message was especially proclaimed around Jerusalem where Jesus had died and was buried just shortly before.

 6. 6. 12 Just Historical Facts

9. As a result of this preaching, the Church was born and it grew, even when many used violence to try to stop it.

10. Sunday became the primary day of worship, not the Sabbath - significant for Jewish believers.

11. Jesus’ own brother, James, who had been a skeptic, was converted to the faith when he also “believed” that he saw the resurrected Jesus.

A few years later, Paul was dramatically converted by an experience in which he also “believed” he saw and heard the risen Jesus.

Now, what will you do with these facts ?

 7. 7. Prophecies about Jesus are Proof

The Old Testament contains 332 specific prophecies which were fulfilled by Christ.

These prove that Jesus is Lord and that the Bible is true and divine.

http://www.victorious.org/churchbook/chur49.htm

 11. 11. 12. 12. Prophecies about Jesus are Proof

In the book, Science Speaks , Professor Peter Stoner used the mathematical principle called "the Law of Compound Probability ," to assess some of the prophecies relating to Christ.

He used it to calculate the odds against a "chance" fulfillment of such predictions when compounded by a specific set of conditions, requirements, or qualifications.

His findings were carefully evaluated by the American Scientific Affiliation, and were found to be sound and convincing .

By this method, he was able to show evidence that would rule out coincidence, chance or human manipulation in the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

http://www.victorious.org/churchbook/chur49.htm

 13. 13. Prophecies about Jesus are Proof

Stoner started by calculating the probability of 1 individual who could precisely fulfill only 8 prophecies relating to Christ. He computed the odds at 1 in 10 17 .

That’s 1 chance in 100,000,000,000,000,000 opportunities.

This is like covering the entire state of Texas 2 feet deep in silver dollars, marking 1 of them, and telling a blind man to pick the marked silver dollar on the 1 st try.

Dr. Stoner then computed the odds of 1 individual that could fulfill just 48 prophecies relating to Christ. He calculated the odds at 1 X 10 157 . Those odds are beyond human comprehension.

But we know Jesus Christ fulfilled 332 distinct prophecies!

The Bible MUST be true.

http://www.victorious.org/churchbook/chur49.htm

 14. 14. The Resurrection is Just Historical Fact.

What will you do with this fact ?

Are you ready to believe?

How?

Pray to God, your Father in Heaven.

Tell Him you’re sorry for being bad.

Tell Him you believe Jesus Christ.

Thank Him for loving you so much.

Ask Him to give you a new life.
