A model for successful Federation-Hillel cooperation for outreach to 20-somethings www.jburgh.org <ul><li>Overview : In Pittsburgh, there are an estimated 2,500 Jewish graduate students and young professionals who live, work, study within a 3 mile radius of one and other. </li></ul><ul><li>Prior to 2007, Shalom Pittsburgh (A Federation-funded initiative) was the sole agency offering programming to young adults as part of their 21-45 “Young Adult cohort”. </li></ul><ul><li>Federation leaders in partnership with Hillel staff sought to create a more “demographic specific” program that was uniquely tailored to specific needs of 20-somethings. </li></ul><ul><li>J’Burgh was founded in 2007 by the Hillel Jewish University Center (JUC) in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh with additional funding from the Jewish Healthcare Foundation </li></ul><ul><li>Hillel model of open-space programming, student guided-empowerment and social entrepreneurship is the basis of J’burgh whose unique brand was created for marketing purposes. </li></ul>
  5. 5. www.jburgh.org <ul><li>The J’Burgh model </li></ul><ul><li>By working with local universities to build strong Jewish graduate student organizations on campus we aim to recruit more Jewish graduate students to Pittsburgh </li></ul><ul><li>By connecting Jewish graduate students and young Jewish adults to the greater community for social and professional networking we aim to retain a larger number of them. </li></ul><ul><li>J ’ Burgh ’ s programs are coordinated and lead through the direction of a 12 person planning board made up of J ’ Burghers within our target Demographic </li></ul><ul><li>These social entrepreneurs receive training and opportunities to lead that prepare them to be “Next Gen” leaders in Pittsburgh and around the country. </li></ul><ul><li>J’Burgh Community Impact </li></ul><ul><li>Engaged 600 Unique individuals in its 1 st full year of programming, and 800 during ’ 09- ’ 10 and the goal of reaching 900 young Jewish adults during the ’ 10- ’ 11 academic year. </li></ul><ul><li>J ’ Burgh serves as a program incubator for the greater Jewish community by providing it’s participants with the ability to act as social entrepreneurs in developing and building programs geared towards their interests. </li></ul><ul><li>As members “age out” of J’Burgh, they are encouraged to move up to Shalom Pittsburgh and other Federation YAD initiatives. </li></ul>
