Ch. 2.2 properties of water

  1. 1. Properties of WaterChapter 2, Section 2
  2. 2. The Water Molecule• Molecule is neutral–Electrons pulled more towardsoxygen, which creates a slightly negativecharge towards the oxygen (polar regionsare charged regions)–Pull between a partially charged hydrogenatom on one molecule and a partiallycharged oxygen on another atom is knownas a hydrogen bond
  3. 3. Properties of Water• Adhesion– attraction between molecules of a different substance• Cohesion– Attraction between molecules of a different substance• High Heat capacity– Amount of heat energy needed to increase asubstance’s temperature• Capillary action– Tendency of liquids to rise in small tubes
  4. 4. Other Vocabulary• Solution – mixture in which the molecules of asubstance are evenly spread out• Suspension – mixture of water and non-dissolved materials that do not settle out
