1. 1. Smith Residence
The River House
Interior Space Planning and Color Concept
5678 Park Avenue
Anywhere, Illinois
2. 2. Front Entry
The entrance to your home gives the visitor a first impression and sets the stage for the rest of the house. It must be a balance of function and style; storage, display, and organization, all while being both practical for family and welcoming to guests.
3. 3. Kitchen
Kitchens are the gathering place and heart of the home. Here, the layout of the fixtures is the framework on which all other functions are placed. Well-planned storage makes room for display and leaves surfaces clear for working, as well as becoming a dramatic backdrop for cooking, dining, and entertaining.
4. 4. Great Room
The Great Room must accommodate a variety of activities, plus store the gear related to both entertaining and relaxing without overpowering the space with the clutter of every day life. Attractive, easily accessible storage with flexible furniture pieces is the key to creating a truly great room.
5. 5. Laundry Room
The Laundry Room is a much overlooked space when it comes to decorating. But, even in this most practical of spaces, thoughtful storage, good lighting, and a sweep of color can make this space hardworking and stylish.
6. 6. Bathrooms
Whatever your personal style and whatever the architectural limits of your space, the ultimate goal when designing a bathroom is to achieve an overall feeling of calm. Storage, decorative or hidden, should create a sense of order and make the bath a place of sanctuary to all who use it.
7. 7. Bedrooms
Bedrooms must be a place of relaxation, a respite from the stress of the every day. The organization of a room can, by its nature, inspire a sense of order and serenity through flexible furniture, concealed storage, and display of valued treasures.
8. 8. Fireplaces
A fireplace adds a sense of warmth and solidity to a room, and becomes a focal point and gathering spot for visitors and family alike. It enhances a room by being kept in scale visually to the surroundings both in size and finish materials.
9. 9. Concept and Finishes
A house becomes a home when it has a sense of unity with its occupants and becomes an integral part of its surroundings. A home should have a strong sense of connection with its setting; an interior connected to the exterior through use of color and natural materials.
10. 10. Racquel Fout, Architectural Designer
rfoutdesigner@rocketmail.com
“Form follows function” – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union. The space within becomes the reality of the building.
- Frank Lloyd Wright
