CloudVelocity A Briefing Note By Lori Macvittie Market Overview The market for Application Migration is just beginning to emerge into an evolving state as cloud adoption of packaged applications becomes a key focus for enterprise customers. There are two primary approaches to migration of existing applications with varying technology approaches to achieving migration: 1. Virtual Machine migration a. Wholesale VM migration b. Shim-‐based migration 2. Application migration a. SI / manual migration b. Toolsets c. Standards d. Solutions The market remains dominated by wholesale VM migration methods as it remains the least complex. Application migration via toolsets and solutions is gaining mindshare due to its ability to transcend not only cloud environments but hypervisor dependencies, allowing a wider selection of and greater mobility between providers. SI and manual migration has been the primary mechanism through which native, non-‐virtualized applications are moved from enterprise to cloud due to complex dependencies and inter-‐application relationships. Automated systems which are able to replicate the completeness of migration offered by manual processes such as SI and manual migration are beginning to emerge but remain nascent. Standards are, at this juncture, non-‐existent with the exception of OASIS CAMP (Cloud Application Management for Platforms) which has only recently been proposed for consideration. Cloud Velocity Overview Cloud Velocity has chosen to focus on a packaged approach to migration of applications irrespective of virtualization status. Its technology is able to package and migrate applications holistically from one environment to another, including dependent systems such as relational databases. This process is automated and requires very little application-‐specific knowledge to ensure all dependent applications are included. Cloud Velocity is targeting hybrid cloud deployments with a focus on migrating enterprise-‐class applications comprising multiple tiers of services. It is also able to migrate applications across clouds, with Rackspace and Amazon EC2 currently supported. Cloud Velocity comprises multiple components enabling automated discovery of dependent systems including applications and storage. It also attempts to resolve integration issues by extended data center services such as authoritative identity stores to applications migrated to the cloud.
