The Milky Way Galaxy and its mighty neighbour Andromeda Galaxy!!!
Our own home!!! Size: Our home planet, Earth, is located in a galaxy called Milky Way. The galaxy is really big. The Milky way’s disk is about 100,000 light-years long in diameter. The thickness of it is about 1,000 light-years thick. Quantity: The Milky Way alone holds about 200 billion stars. Almost 90% of the stars are located near the centre of the galaxy. Only about 10% of them are located in the far reaches of our galaxy called the Outer Halo. The Milky Way galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy. The barred spiral galaxies are in the family of the spiral galaxies.
Our good old neighbour!!! Distance from us: Though the Andromeda Galaxy is the closest galaxy to ours, it is a long way away from us! It is in fact a whopping 2.5 million light-years away! Size: All though both our Milky way and the Andromeda look similar, the andromeda is much bigger than ours. It is a mind blowing 260,000 light-years in diameter and 2,600 light-years thick. Quantity: Although the Andromeda Galaxy is bigger than ours it holds about the same amount of stars as ours. Some scientists also believe that the Andromeda has more black holes than ours! Strange! The Andromeda galaxy is a spiral galaxy. It is also more than double the size of our home galaxy The Milky Way!
Andromeda galaxy Milky Way galaxy Size- The Andromeda galaxy is 260,000 light-years in diameter, nearly twice the size of our galaxy. The Milky Way galaxy may look big, but it is actually only a 100,000 light-years in diameter! Thick- The Andromeda galaxy’s central bulge is really big, about 2,600 light-years thick! Like it’s size the Milky Way galaxy is also small on it’s central thickness, only about a 1,000 light-years thick. Types- The Andromeda galaxy is a spiral galaxy. Scientists predict that there are many spiral galaxies that are bigger than the Andromeda. The Milky Way galaxy is a barred-spiral galaxy. Barred-spiral galaxies look kind of like a spiral galaxy only a bit different on the centre. Colour- The Andromeda galaxy is a mixture of bright colours. The colours are Blue, Gold, Red and Black. The Milky Way galaxy is also filled with colour like it’s neighbour. The colours are White, Blue and Black.
