- Thanks for coming to my talk this morning. My topic is “We built this city: how Second Life is saving the world.” \n\n \n \nWhat I have been calling it to myself is “second life stuff that Rik thinks is awesome”\n
- who am I?\n\n \n
- \n Community manager of the Nonprofit Commons, the largest community of nonprofit organizations in the virtual world, with 120+ member groups spread across four sims in SL.  Sponsored by the wonderful organization TechSoup, based not far from here in SF.\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n Who here is involved with an organization that is a member of the NPC?\n \n\n \n
- \n For past year I have run the blog Betterverse.org, a chronicle of the various public good applications of virtual worlds\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n We cover all the news that is fit to screen on Second Life, OpenSim, Unity3d, youth focused VWs and MMOs, as they pertain to nonprofits, government and education.\n \n
- Was until recently the assistant director of the OLP at GK\nGK is a 20 year old youth development organization in NYC that helps at risk youth reach their potential as global citizens, community leaders and achieving students\nAt GK we have pioneered a number of tech-enable youth empowerment programs, a couple of which I will mention today.\n
- What is something you are passionate about, an issue or cause you care deeply about?\n\n \n \nturn to your neighbor to your left or right and tell them something (cause, charity, issue) that you care about?   SL: Type it in public text chat\n\n \n \nShout out some issues or charities that you care about. - There’s a lot of things that we individually in this room and online care about\n\n \n \nCollectively I bet we could match people up by who cared about the same things, and we could event draw lines among each other of ways that my issue connects to yours.  Animal cruelty and homelessness, AIDS in Africa and the war in Afghanistan. etc.\n\n \n \nPerhaps we could even decide in this hour some common action that we would all do together. Stage a protest, go volunteer at a shelter down the street, write to our representatives, tell our family and friends about our common concern.\n\n \n \nVirtual worlds create a fertile environment for just this kind of dialectic: from conversation about things we care about, to connections with others with that same concern, to collective action on that issue.\n

- There are a lot of tools available for nonprofits and charities to use. And more every day it seems.  So what makes VWs special and worthy of investing in time, staff and money?\n\n \n \nNOTE: This section is not for you in the audience, here or virtually.  You are here, so clearly you get it.  Virtual worlds are special and powerful. - How I speak about virtual worlds to organizations starting to think about them. “What if there was a tool that combined FaceBook, YouTube, Skype, discussion forums, MMOs, and breedable chickens?  There is such a tool. It’s called Second Life.”\n\n \n \nVWs nowaways at their best, can combine the strengths of asynchronous tools and synchronous online tools:\n
- ideo showcase: If you are a filmmaker , you can make a video screening room\n\n \n \nor throw a video screening party with all of your friends and fans\n
- If you are a teacher, you can create a self-guided tutorial on some topic, \n\n \n \nor a live class with an expert located anywhere in the world\n
- If you have lost a loved one, you can build a remembrance chapel where people can leave momentos and messages , \n\n \n \nor hold a memorial gathering where people can gather in real time.\n

- Let’s start with the education and learning applications of Second Life, of which there are a zillion.\n
- a little known institution called the National Aeronautic and Space Administration has been doing some great stuff in Second Life\n\n \n \nNASA has been in SL in some form since 2006 of course\n\n \n \nRecently they opened the NASA Education Resource Center , a virtual space to support educators in teaching about astrophysics, engineering, space exploration.  \n\n \n \nThere is a live education specialist who can meet you inworld to talk about your lesson plans, what media is available, and anything else. And a really cool lunar lander.\n\n \n
- US Army - Federal Virtual World Challenge\n•funding innovative projects that can be used for training and education by the military and other government branches\n•as a peace-loving Quaker, I feel weird using this example\n◦But this reminds me of how military was partly responsible for building out the infrastructure and technologies of what later became the internet\n◦Sometimes the tools of warfare can be turned to support the cause of peace\n\n \n \nThis year they are offering 2 prizes of $25K each to the best new technologies for education and simulation\n•Not exclusive to Second Life, but several winners created prototypes for training in SL, including a hurricane shelter for training NY city employees about disaster preparedness and an SL bot that demonstrates how robots can be used for space exploration.\n
- I Dig Science:\n•This is a bit self serving since I was the project manager of I Dig Science\n•A joint project of Global Kids and the Field Museum of Chicago\n•Youth engaging in virtual fossil dig while following in real time actual paleontologists on a dig in another part of hte world\n•Has taken place in Tanzania, Zambia and Brazil\n\n \n
- Mayo clinic: offering credited courses in SL\n\n \n \nHuman Mosaic Systems created a sim that shows you how the ancient Mayans saw the stars and how that effected their culture and agricultural practices.\n\n \n \nWorld Bank Institute: training for government officials\n

- Second Life is fertile ground for political action, protest, art and expression, organizing.  Perhaps by living in a space where we have nearly complete freedom to do and be whoever we want to be, we can sympathize with the causes of those who have their freedoms restricted by repressive governments and dictatorial regimes.\n
- Egypt Demonstrations in SL:\n•Earlier this year, a series of pro-democracy demonstrations were happening all over the Arab world, including in Egypt in February\n•There is also an active Egyptian presence in SL\n•enabled those outside of Egypt to show solidarity with Egyptians fighting for rights, get news, and connect directly with people there on the ground and in the diaspora\n\n \n \nhere’s some footage of what the demonstrations in SL were like: live CNN or aljazeera feed, text chat in English and Arabic, people talking in several languages, clever signs, chanting, music\n

- The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an annual international campaign that dates from 1991, started by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at Rutgers University.\n•Thousands of groups participate in rallies, public forums, teach-ins, and other events to highlight positive actions men and women can take to stop gender violence in their communities.\n\n \n \n \n16 days in SL last november:\n•Free classes on "activist citizen journalism"\n•An exhibit on " Representations of Gender Violence in Second Life"\n•An "Anti-Fashion Show"\n•A Men's Roundtable: Role of Men in the Elimination of Violence\n\n \n
- Second Life is a great place to find information and support on living a healthier life\n
- Raise your hand if you have been involved in an SL Relay for Life fundraiser?  Give yourselves a hand!\n\n \n \nHow much money has been raised to date?  [PAUSE]$1 million bucks raised!\n\n \n \nBut it’s more than about the money. Lots of other great social media that are very strong tools for fundraising.  \n•SL is about showing emotional , moral support for people in their fight against cancer, and remember those who have been lost.\n\n \n
- \n •BootedGirl Foxtrot was the featured survivor at RFL this year.\n \n\n ◦spoke through an electronic simulated voice because her cancer treatment has effected her vocal cords\n \n\n ◦She explained why she relays...\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n I relay for life for those who I have loved, known, and will always remember. I relay for a cure, a hope, a wish, to come true. I relay for those who have heard the answers to, "How long do I have?". I relay for those who's family could not deal with knowing their daughter has cancer.\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n In September of 2008, I was told I would be lucky to see Christmas, which is also my birthday as well. I went through series of tests, scans, emergency surgeries, nerve damage to vocals during a tumor extraction, being revived twice during surgery on separate occasions, then poisoned with chemo treatments.\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n Now, I no longer recognize the girl I see in the mirror, but now see a survivor, who still loves the same, dreams the same, and at times laughs the same at my own dark humor. I created my Second life account the week I stopped working. I relayed for the first time in Second life in 2009, I found loving friends, and my virtual happiness in 2010.\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n I relayed in 2010 while I was very sick, and that meant alot to me at a time I could not walk well at all in real life. Now in 2011, I relay again, for more life to have with loved ones, on all formats of reality. I relay to celebrate survival, for my own, and for others who made it through, when doctors were sure we would not.\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n I relay for those, who seen the darkest hour, and lived to see the light of hope, to have this chance to type this now, wishing not to one day regain my ability of speech, but for more miracles to touch others living in their hardest hours. I relay for you, and I, for all who cared for us, and all who gave hope, love, and their time.\n \n \n \n \n\n \n

- As a place where you are in a virtual recreation of the earth, with lush forests, beautiful coral reefs, unspoiled beaches, you are touched by the contrast to the impact of human pollution and extraction on the environment. Perhaps that’s part of what makes SL such an interesting place for environmental action.\n
- Green building challenge: amateur and professionals creating their vision of a green building\n•The Virtual Museum of Architecture held a "Green" House Build-Off from May 6-8 at their sim.  \n•Expert and amateur builders were challenged to create "the most functional and appealing building within the parameters of the LEED-inspired Eco-Friendly guidelines."  \n•Here are the two winners:\n◦In the "professional" division, xJessicax Harvy won for her "Cromwell House," a virtual example of an "earth ship." She describes it as a house made of rammed earth and tires where the tires are staggered like bricks. The walls are load bearing, store heat, and keeps indoor temperatures constant. Typically the tires are plastered over so that it looks more like an adobe structure.\n◦In the novice category, Jamiee Daines took first prize for his eco-friendly home.  He describes it as a house "is designed and constructed for living in the North Eastern US therefore emphasis has been placed not only on building materials used but to make the dwelling less dependent on as fossil fuels for heating and cooling."\n\n \n

- SL is a great tool for promoting public participation and team collaboration.  Here are a couple of interesting recent examples:\n
- Virtual Library of Birmingham\n•Library of Birmingham in the UK hired Daden Inc to virtual replica of their future building to be finished in 2013\n•purpose: allow public to access building and comment on its layout, design, and uses as it is being built\n•Library staff can arrange and rearrange furnishings and meet with public in-world\n\n \n
- Kansas to Cairo project:\n•project to bring together American and Egyptian architecture students to collaborate togher\n•With funding from the U.S. State Department,\n•California-based architect David Denton,  , Dr. Amr Attia from Cairo’s Ain Shams University, and Kara Bartelt from USC School of Architecture brought students into the virtual world, who shared and discussed design ideas throughout the semester.\n[ show video]\n
- Smithsonian Latino Virtual Museum\nthere is no dedicated museum in the Smithsonian campus devoted to the artistic and cultural contributions of Latinos\nBut vast holdings throughout the different museums of the Smithsonian\nSo a virtual museum opened in 2009 enables the Smithsonian to highlight their collections across museums and to hold virtual events like the Day of the Dead / Dia de Los Muertos, including regional experts, artists and musicians\n\n \n
- So that was a quick rundown of some of the awesome things that we are doing in this place we call Second Life. It’s not a perfect world, by any means.  There’s a lot that could be done to make it better, that we’ll certainly be talking about over the next two days.\n\n \n \nI want to highlight what I see as some of the key challenges and issues for nonprofits and educators.\n
- \n hard to get started\n \n \n \n \n\n •technology barriers - we all know about this\n \n\n ◦convincing strapped nonprofits, schools, libraries to take a chance on a Second Life project is all the more difficult when they find out that their computers are too antiquated and their internet access too slow\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n Financial barriers : LL rescinding discount for educators and nonprofits\n \n \n \n \n\n ◦major blow for many educational and nonprofit projects in SL.  Nearly every week I hear about a worthwhile effort that has been discontinued because they couldn’t afford their tier.\n \n\n ◦the NPC, NMC, Info Island and others have been helping provide free or discounted land for groups\n \n\n ◦At the same time, educators and nonprofits have realized that bc of this that there are cheaper alternative platforms out there.  \n \n\n ◦There have to be ways for LL to meet their costs and earn profits while also being a responsible corporate citizen\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n Hard to create\n \n \n \n \n\n •the creation tools of Second Life are incredible\n \n\n ◦the ability to bring in media and content from the web\n \n\n •but for busy nonprofits and educators\n \n\n ◦we don’t have months of time to learn how to create custom experiences for our constituents and students, we have days or weeks at most\n \n\n ◦we don’t have the budget to hire developers for extensive projects\n \n\n ◦so we use whatever cheap pre-fab and freebie stuff is out there\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n Hard to share it widely\n \n \n \n \n\n •reaching mass audiences won’t happen until the technology becomes more affordable and distributed and internet access is faster for more people\n \n\n •Viewer 2 in general has helped\n \n\n ◦simple mode is very easy to operate\n \n\n ◦I can take non-techies from knowing nothing to doing the basics of SL in 30 minutes\n \n\n •I and others are very excited about some kind of web accessibility for our sims to reach broader audiences for what we are creating in world\n \n\n \n
