  • 2. G321 Foundation Portfolio •  800 entries, over 30 centres •  Lots of magazine work, some video, little web or radio •  Changed emphasis as now 50% of marks •  Introduction of electronic evaluation •  Preliminary task as new element •  Choice of electronic or paper research and planning
  • 3. General issues •  Meeting deadlines for marks and despatch of work •  Correct and playable formats •  Accessible online material, including centre blog hub •  Using the seven evaluation questions in the spec •  Found material •  No allowance for technical issues or lost work without proper procedures
  • 4. Marking issues •  Teacher comments essential •  Using the levels and the criteria •  Internal moderation •  Consistency when more than one task offered •  Differentiation within group work •  Level 4 must represent excellence •  Moderators have and will intervene more
  • 5. Research and Planning •  Research tending to dominate at expense of planning •  Relevance of material •  Size of material (magazine work) •  Link between planning and construction marks •  If blogging- use from start not just as summative
  • 6. Evaluation •  Blogs, powerpoints, occasional DVD extras, videotaped presentations, podcasts •  Not meant to be an essay- Word docs not acceptable •  Best examples used visuals well •  Group work needs clarity over individual contribution •  Best seen as a product in itself
  • 7. Construction •  Moderators start with this aspect •  Need to consider what represents good construction •  Expectations for Level 4 must be high •  Need for more training on equipment and more practice
  • 8. Film •  Needs to look like an opening •  Camerawork/editing/mise-en-scene needs to be appropriate •  More attention to titles needed •  Soundtrack part of construction mark •  Length •  Relevance of research
  • 9. Magazine •  Attention to conventions •  Use of decent DTP •  Verification of own photos •  Screengrabs useful evidence in R&P •  No found material •  Variety of images
  • 10. Web •  MUST be online ! •  No need for paper printouts or disks •  Not just from templates •  Look at criteria for the task
  • 11. Radio •  Audibility •  Found material •  Take seriously- use real stories and real people
  • 12. G322/323 Exam •  2200 entries (9 for radio) •  New marking style •  Texts worked well
  • 13. Marking •  Media Terminology 10 •  Use of examples 20 •  Explanation, analysis and argument 20 •  Worth using formatively with candidates
  • 14. Q.1 •  Avoid lengthy intros •  No need for ‘grand theory’ •  Editing and sound weakest areas •  Editing use for time and space needs addressing •  Representation handled well and tied to its construction

Q.2 •  Case studies need to be focussed to question •  Film most popular choice •  Tendency to rely too much on single examples (harder to generalise) •  Music and videogames often worked well •  Newspapers less successful •  Wealkest answers ignored Audiences and Institutions and were just textual analysis
