2. 2. SETTING

SCHOOL : WEST CHATHAM MIDDLE

LEVEL : 8th GRADE INCLUSION

SUBJECT: PHYSICAL SCIENCE

 3. 3. SETTING

NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 25

CLASS DEMOGRAPHICS:

BLACK MALES = 7

BLACK FEMALES = 4

WHITE MALES = 6

WHITE FEMALES = 6

OTHER = 2

 4. 4. LESSON

The students were being taught about Heat and Heat Technology.

Standards: S8CS1, S8CS1.B, S8CS3,S8CS3.E, S8CS4.A, S8CS4.B, S8CS6.B, S8CS6.C, S8CS7.A, S8CS9.B,

 6. 6. SMARTBOARD

When the class came in all of the students would look at the SmartBoard to get their warm-up for the day.

The teacher would go over the warm-up and have the students come and write the answers on the SmartBoard.

 7. 7. SMARTBOARD

The teacher would have the same worksheet on the SmartBoard that the students were working on. The students read the information from either their worksheet or the SmartBoard. The teacher would highlight important information on the SmartBoard and discuss the information.

 8. 8. SMARTBOARD

The students would complete the worksheet questions on their own. After the students completed the worksheet the teacher would call on students to fill in the blanks on the SmartBoard as the class went over the answers.

 9. 9. Differences in the Classroom

Since the implementation of the SmartBoard in the classroom, the students come in and settle down faster. They do this because their warm-up is easy to see projected on the SmartBoard. Plus there is a timer that counts down letting the students know how much time they have left to complete the warm-up.

 10. 10. Differences in the Classroom

The students also seem to be more engaged with the lesson. The teacher thinks that it is because the SmartBoard is something different that they do not get in every classroom. The students also get to get out of their seat and come write answers onto the SmartBoard.

 11. 11. Support for Technology

The principal is wanting to imlement more technology into the school. The teacher has had SmartBoard training one time. If the teacher has a question, he asks another teacher that has had more training with the SmartBoard. The teacher says that he could also call the technology support downtown to get more training.

 12. 12. Technology Difficulties

The only problems the teacher has experienced with the SmartBoard is the shadow that is created when trying to write on the board. The other problem is students bumping into the board or the media cart making the alignment offset.

 13. 13. Students' Responses

I asked a few students what they liked about the SmartBoard and their responses were:

Easy to see the assignments

Easy to read the notes

Fun to write on

Better than just using the overhead
