Editor's Notes
The learning objectives of this lesson are: To know how to prepare your website before you submit itTo know how to submit your website to search engines so that it is indexed
Before you are ready to submit your website to search engines, let’s review some of the factors we talked about this semester regarding things you should do while preparing your website to go live.Too many websites have fancy flash scripted introductions on the index page and have no other way to get around it. Google and other search engine spiders can’t read your flash page and thus may not read your other pages either. If you prefer to have flash on your website then add a text link to your website’s alternate index page to allow search engine spiders to view your content.
As pointed out in an earlier lesson, although meta tags alone do not necessarily give your site a high ranking on the SERP’s, they are are nevertheless important. Be sure to carefully check the TITLE tags, keywords and description Meta tags to ensure that you have meaningful keywords in these tags. Google and other search engines rely on meta tags to compose the snippets displayed in the SERP, specifically when there is a lot of code on your page. It is essential therefore to set up precise and pertinent keywords accompanied by valid descriptions of your site.
Many sites use pictures extensively without considering their effect on SEO. Pictures by themselves can’t be read by a spider. But a spider will read the alt tag of a picture. From an SEO’s perspective your pictures should all have an alt tag attached using meaningful keywords. In general, use alt tags whenever possible to reemphasize your keywords.
The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors. The Open Directory was founded in the spirit of the Open Source movement, and is the only major directory that is absolutely free of charge. There is not a cost to submit a site to the directory, and/or to use the directory's data. The Open Directory data is made available for free to anyone who agrees to comply with the free use license. If you submit your site to www.dmoz.org then Google and other search engines will pick up the URL that was listed. This implies that you may not need to do anything else to be included in Google’s search engine index.
However, to be sure that your pages get indexed by Google and other search engines quickly, it is a good strategy to go ahead and submit your page to Google and the other search engines just in case. Google provides an Add URL pagethat allows you to submit a URL straight to the crawler.Only the top-level page from a host is necessary; you do not need to submit each individual page. Google’s crawler, Googlebot, will be able to find the rest. Google updates its index on a regular basis, so updated or outdated link submissions are not necessary. Dead links will 'fade out' of their index on their next crawl when they update their entire index. In addition to the ADD URL tool, Google offers other options to submit a list of URLs, specifically a sitemap file. Within this Google Webmaster Central tool users can index everything for free.
There are many other uses for the Add URL tool, such as adding a listing for local businesses, media or adding items for sale.
Google Base is a place where you can easily submit all types of online and offline content, which is made searchable on Google. You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they do related searches. You can submit information about all types of online and offline content to Google Base via a data feed or Google Base API. Items you submit to Google Base might be found on Google properties like Google or Google Maps. Google Base enables you to add attributes describing your contentso that searchers can easily find it. The more popular individual attributes become, the more often Google will suggest them when others post the same items.
Of course MSN and Yahoo also offer a URL submission tools. Please check them out for your Quiz. This concludes lesson #11.
