To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis Essay
To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Harper Lee articulates coming of age in a town struck by racism.
Scout begins the novel as a six year old girl who does not fully recognise how skewed her world is
until she is nine and sees what it really means to kill a mockingbird due to the actions of a shy
Arthur Radley. In the passage Jem and Scout are attacked by Bob Ewell; the father of supposed rape
victim Mayella Ewell, in response to Jem and Scout's father Atticus embarrassing Bob during the
trial of Tom Robinson. However, Arthur Radley comes out to save them, inevitably killing Bob. This
means he will have to go through the burdensome court process, but the county sheriff, Heck Tate
wants to change that and Scout needs to understands why. Furthermore Scout realizes what it's like
to be Arthur Radley, always watching. Within the final two chapters,To Kill A Mockingbird
conveys the theme that there's good and evil in coming of age throughout the book by utilizing
symbolism, conflict, and character. First and foremost, prolific throughout the story is the
mockingbird's representation as a medium. Tom Robinson was convicted of raping Mayella Ewell
by only the word of a racist drunk and his daughter despite the evidence arguing against being
strong. Tom Robinson is representational of the mockingbird because he does chores for Mayella
like fixing her house up out of kindness. But when Mayella was confronted by her abusive father as

Through the course of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem encounters a series of
events that cause him to grow up. During Tom Robinson's trial, Jem's eyes were opened to the
racism and prejudice of the South: loss of innocence, a major theme in the novel, is a realization of
the cruelty and injustice in the world, and that one must develop a tolerance for it. Jem is young and
carefree in the beginning of the novel. He is just starting to take on the responsibilities of an older
brother: "Jem condescended to take me to school the first day, a job usually done by one's parents,
but Atticus said Jem would be delighted to show me where my room was." (p.20). Atticus is trusting
Jem to safely get Scout to school, and help her...show more content...
In addition, Jem abandons all of his childish morals: "Jem looked the floor. Then he rose and broke
the remaining code of our childhood. He went out of the room and down the hall. 'Atticus,' his voice
was distant, 'can you come here a minute, sir?'" (p.187–188). Dill, Jem and Scout's best friend, ran
away from his home and came to the Finch's house. Jem has broken "the remaining code of our
childhood" by telling Atticus about Dill, rather than keeping it a secret. He has matured past his
childhood years, and realizes that sometimes it is best to involve adults. Jem is exposed to the racism
and prejudice of the South through Tom Robinson's trial, and it makes him question what he never
thought twice about before. [insert lead–in] "'...if the jury's still out, you can wait with us. But I
expect it'll be over before you get back.' 'You think they'll acquit him that fast?' asked Jem. Atticus
opened his mouth to answer, but shut it and then left us." (p.277) Jem sees Tom Robinson's trial
through eyes untainted by prejudice and discrimination. To him, Tom is obviously innocent. Atticus,
on the other hand, is older and more cynical. He knows about racial discrimination, he knows it
strongly influences a person's judgement, and he knows Tom will be found guilty. Jem realizes this
when Tom Robinson is convicted. As a result, he learns that racism can cloud a person's judgement
to the point that they will convict an innocent man. Jem's loss of innocence

To Kill A Mockingbird Essay In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a major theme is the loss of
innocence. Whether from emotional abuse, racial prejudice or learning, Boo, Tom, and Scout all
lose their innocence in one sense or another. The prejudice that each character endures leads to their
loss. Through the responses of Boo, Tom, and Scout, Harper Lee shows how each character
responded differently to their loss of innocence. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbirdthe character of
Boo Radley is the first to suffer the loss of his innocence. As a teen, Boo experienced trouble with
the law and for his consequences his father imprisoned him in his own house. Because of the harsh
consequences forced upon him by his father, Boo grew up without a...show more content...
With the racial tension so high during this time period, Tom's innocence was lost before he could
even defend himself. This was shown through Atticus's reply to Scout's question of, "Will we
win?" Atticus answered no because the case was lost before it began. Tom Robinson's response to
his loss of innocence was to simply run away from the problem that had befallen him. For his
attempted escape Tom suffered the highest consequence, "They shot him,' said Atticus. 'He was
running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at
the fence and started climbing over" (235). Due to Tom's decision on how to respond, he was
killed even though he was placed in his position no thanks to himself. Tom Robinson chose poorly
when it came to his response towards his loss of innocence and it cost him his life. The main
character of the novel, Scout, was the only character that suffered a loss of innocence and
responded in a way that did not ruin her life. During the novel Scout gradually lost her innocence
due to the fact of her ever–increasing knowledge of the world. Being the child that she was, Scout
had a kind of blind faith in her community that it was as good and as moral as she believed it to be,
but she realized after the trial how wrong she was. Throughout the

Learning lessons is a very important part of growing up. Children learn new things every day of
their life. Even adults learn something every once in a while. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird
by Harper Lee, the character Scout is very adventurous and loves to learn; she has many
experiences that lead to her being taught many different things about life. On page 12 of Cliff
Notes for this novel, John Sova writes "each experience is designed to give Scout a further
understanding about certain things in life and about people. In one way or another, every episode
leads to some type of learning experience for Scout". Scout learns a lot of different things about her
town's views, the people who she's heard about but never really knew, and...show more content...
Scout was also very into thinking that Boo Radley was a terrible monster of a man. She has never
seen him in person, but all the stories Jem had told her made her believe that he was too scary to
even think about.
Jem explains Boo Radley to Scout by saying: he's about six–and–a–half feet tall, judging from his
tracks, he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were
bloodstained–if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged
scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he
drooled most of the time. (14)
With a description like that, Scout thought that Boo Radley was the scariest man alive. Scout
didn't know any better at the time than to believe whatever she heard about him from others.
When Scout finds gum in the knothole of the oak tree near the Radley house, she starts to think
that maybe Boo isn't so bad. When he saves Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell, they realize that Boo
actually cares about them and wants to keep them safe. Scout and Jem always believed Boo to be
evil, when he is actually a good–hearted human being. At the close of the novel, Scout talks about
Boo to Atticus, saying that "he was real nice" (323). Scout learns that people are not always what
they seem to be at first, and there is always something good underneath every harsh surface. Scout
always talked about but never

To Kill A Mockingbird Narrative
Has anything ever happened in your life that changed you as a person? Jem, a character in To Kill
A Mockingbird, breaks his arm and it helps shape him into the person he ended up being because it
was a major event in his life. He was changed by this event because it was a major event, Bob was
going to kill him so how he overcomes it will show the type of person he is. Major things that
happen in your life help shape who you are today.
One important thing in my life is when I tore my ACL the first time in eighth grade basketball. It
was November 15, 2015, when I first tore my ACL. I was at basketball practice and we were doing a
rebounding drill. I jumped up to rebound the ball, because I can hardly jump I landed before most
of the other players and Charlie, one of my teammates, came down on my knee. I heard my knee
pop. My knee caved in and I fell, feeling excruciating pain as I fell to the ground I just saw the
ground moving closer and closer. As I fell to the ground I felt my body hit the hard gym floor. All
that went through my head was "That hurt really bad!!!!" I was really sweaty, I could smell the
sweat from the bodies, and I was tired from previous things we had done in practice but I just sat
there screaming and balling. I started screaming and balling because my knee hurt so badly. I
could taste the saliva from my mouth while I was lying there balling. One of the other players
went into the locker room and grabbed my phone, I called my dad but he couldn't make out
anything I was saying because I was still crying. My coach, Ms. Bolton, carried me to the bench
while my dad was on his way. My dad carried me out to the truck then inside to the couch when we
got home. Brock, my brother, went and picked up some crutches for me. I ended up going to the
doctor about a week later and then on January 4, 2016, I had my first surgery. Coming out of surgery
and waking up in recovery was the worst pain I've EVER felt. I came out of recovery and was
screaming in pain because they didn't keep track of when I had last had morphine so I wasn't on
track and I felt my whole leg right after surgery. Tearing my ACL was important because it made
me who I am today and made me stronger by

To Kill a Mockingbird Essay
There are many different types of symbols in our world today; in English literature as well as all
around us on a day–to–day basis. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird we follow a little girl,
Scout, as she faces the truth about the world and its injustice. The central and most obvious
symbol of this novel, as well as the title of the book, is the mockingbird. It represents the
innocence and injustice in this story, represented by Tom Robinson and the events surrounding
the trial, but also sets the theme of racial prejudice. Racial prejudice is a reoccurring theme of the
book, which is evident in Tom Robinson's trial, but also a good element of the setting because the
story is set in the southern United States, where there was much prejudice against blacks. Old
Mrs. Dubose is a very racist woman. You can tell this by the quote she yells at the children on
page 102 where she says, "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" Atticus
has always told Jem and Scout not to let Mrs. Dubose get to them in the comments and threats that
she yells at them from her porch, but this is the comment that sets Jem off. He takes Scout's baton
that she is playing with and destroys the perfectly white flowers in Mrs. Dubose's yard; every last
one of them, and then he breaks the baton as well. There are two symbols at play here that work
with each other to create the irony of this scene. The first one is the flowers themselves; they are
described as beautiful and

To Kill A Mockingbird Theme Essay
"To Kill a Mockingbird" Based on a best–selling novel by Harper Lee has the theme of the constant
fight between different sides. It is realistic, good and bad, oppression and the law versus justice.
The novel mirrored life back then and in a way can still resemble some things in modern time.
People could relate and understand this book on personal levels, that why it was such a hit, now it is
used as a life lesson or for educational purposes. The plot lies on the trial that Atticus takes on, he is
assigned to be the defense lawyer for a black man accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell,
who more reasonably was abused by her father Bob, this is likely because it was the 1930's and

Innocence, or the loss of it, to the kids Jem and Scout. Some of the themes were very dark the
civil rights movement was most likely a big motivator for her book and it affected the themes
immensely. "Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy
weather the streets turned to red slop . . . somehow it was hotter then . . . bony mules hitched to
Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. Men's stiff collars
wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three–o'clock naps, and by
nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum. . . .". The plot revolves
around Scout Finch, who is 6 years old, and her older brother, Jem who live in sleepy Maycomb,
Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill and snooping in on their mysterious
neighbor, Boo Radley. The plot is displayed in a real time and in a real place, Monroeville, AL, in
the 30's, this supports my thesis that it can be determined as realistic. The books take a toll over the
course of 2 years mostly focusing on the events that happen within the period of summertime. This
all seems practical, small town, nosy kids. When Atticus, their widowed father, and a respected
lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson against fabricated rape

During your confrontations with Scout in Maycomb, you bring up the various points about Scout's
actions and how they are not pleasing to you, such as being friends with Walter Cunningham, and
wearing breeches and overalls. During all of this, you bring up the problematic assumption of how
she should dress and behave because of the gender roles which surround society. You first make this
assumption when you are with Scout during christmas, when you said that Scout could never hope
to be a lady because she wears breeches. This caused Scout to be more volatile, which led to Scout
fighting Francis. Another time when you make this assumption is when you talk to Scout about
Walter. You assume that Scout will pick up Walters bad habits which will ruin the Finchfamily
name. This led to Scout resenting you even more than before. The last time you made the
assumption is when Atticus talks to Scout and Jem about acting better because the Finches were
created from generations of breeding. This led to Scout again resenting you, and even taking some of
it out on Jem through fighting. The assumptions you make are caused by the fact that Scout doesn't

Scout is impacted in both a positive way and a negative way. She becomes more violent against
Jem, Cecil, and You. But later on, Scout wore a dress during the missionary meeting, which means

such as Francis. He overheard you confronting Scout about wearing breeches, and he used that plus
name calling to spark Scouts fuse, and cause a fight. Atticus is also impacted by your assumptions
when he has to make compromises to let you stay in their house. Because of the impacts on others
and the conflicts it has caused, the assumptions on gender roles which you make are hurtful and
wrong, and impact people more than you can see. I hope you'll take this under

To Kill A Mockingbird Essay Introduction
To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee. It takes place in the southern, racist town of
Maycomb. The book takes place in the 1920's and follows the events of a girl named Scout. Lee
really puts you in the pages of this amazing novel. She using events that happened in her life and
adapts them to her characters. In this novel you can see racism and how bad it really was in very
southern times. Through the book you can see the horrible horrors of racism.
The book follows the events of Scout, a young adventurous girl, who is very outspoken and
funny. She has a brother named Jem who is a very wise character and likes to take dares. During
the summer a boy named Dill comes every summer. He likes to tell "stories" and how he is very
mature for doing adult things. He is the character that is most immune to racism, because he did not
grow up in a racist town like Maycomb. His character represents innocence. Jem and Scouts father's
name is Atticus. He is a retired attorney who takes a very daring challenge. In school Scout gets into

We see Scout and numerous other children drop little racist sayings. In the novel Scout constantly
uses the n–word to refer to black people as individuals. She says to Atticus that "Calpurnia says that's
n–word talk". The way she uses the word lightly and constantly in the book shows that beneath
her appearance she is a racist. It's not her fault, it's the towns. The town's racist so it rubs off on
the children. I think of racism has a filthy, disgusting disease that is started with older generations
and works its way into the minds of younger generations. It's a disease that keeps going in an
infinite loop. Bob Ewell blamed a black man for something he didn't do because of his race. Tom did
not rape his daughter and is being blamed for it because of race. The children that are trapped in this
racist town are stuck and cannot escape the disease of dehumanizing and

I seem to have a love for watching birds through branches and trees in far distant trees that
surrounds my habitat. The binoculars that I watch it from gives a beautiful view of birds, and one
was a rainbow colored bird named Rosy–Faced Lovebird. As I see there array of features, the face
and throat are pink, darkest on the forehead and above the eye. The bill is horn coloured, the iris
is brown and the legs and feet are grey. They seem to be a couple that happens to be very attached
thus created a nest for their newborn baby. One of the things I found most adorable was the way
they kept pecking each other to symbolize their love for one another. It seems very secret as if they

Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" explores key ideas exposing the human condition and the
difficulties faced when one is forced to challenge their morality. "To Kill a Mockingbird" remains
relevant in today's society as this novel effectively addresses preconceived issues of religion, racism
and, the overriding theme of bigotry in our world, no matter the era in which we are living. Lee uses
a variety of techniques to convey the social injustices and inequalities of the world in the 1930's,

Race is a huge topic of discussion in the novel, as well as in our society today, it is conveyed that we
often have trouble accepting difference and make assumptions of a person based on the colour
of their skin, not their actions. This theme of racism is evident from the onset and throughout the
novel, Lee uses the word "nigger" conveniently to display the underlying racism in Maycomb
county and to highlight the racist attitudes of many persons in the novel. This theme of racism is
evident in scenes involving Tom Robinson, Atticus states in the courtroom ""Which, gentlemen,
we know is in itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson's skin", in this quote it is illustrated that the
colour of Tom's skin is associated with the depravity of the crime committed, this idea that there
is a link between one's colour and their actions is a theme that is a constant in our current society,
as it is not unusual for a person to be exposed to stereotyping due to the colour of their skin. Racial
discrimination is a theme that is still ever relevant in today's society as we are constantly
associating specific groups with crimes and injustices. The theme of race is a subject matter that
has kept Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" pertinent in our evolving and ever changing world
and will continue to do

I really liked To Kill a Mockingbird and I enjoyed reading it. My favorite parts of the story were
the themes and ideas about racism, prejudice, and understanding presented in it and following
Scout's views and beliefs as she grew older and matured. Her increased understanding and
acceptance of people who are different than her remind me of myself as I grew older. One of the
main ideas of this novel is racism. The story takes place in a fictitious town located in Alabama
that is very similar to many small towns in the South during the Great Depression. Almost all of the
townspeople are racist and believe that blacks are inferior to all whites, even those who are
considered white trash. For example, the Ewell family literally lives in...show more content...
Atticus tells her, "If you can learn a simple trick Scout, you can get along better with all kinds of
folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...
until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." The phrase "walk around in someone's skin"
or "climb into someone's shoes" are used several times throughout the book. Throughout the
story, she climbs into the shoes of many people, such as Miss Caroline, Jem, and Boo Radley.
Scout struggles to understand why Miss Caroline punished her and Atticus advises her to think
of the incident from Miss Caroline's point of view. When Jem begins to act differently and not
want Scout around him, she tries to walk in his shoes and feel what he is feeling. At the end of
the story, when Scout stands on Boo Radley's porch, she sees the street the way he has always
seen it and understands what he must have felt when watching everyone on it. While reading the
story, I empathized with Boo Radley. When his father punished him and never allowed him to
leave the house, I pitied him and thought that he would have turned out to be a good person as an
adult if he hadn't made poor choices as a teenager and gotten involved with the wrong crowd. I also
empathized with Mayella Ewell, who must have been extremely lonely all of the time. Townspeople
refuse to talk to her because she is considered white trash, so

Main Idea Of To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill A Mockingbird which was written by Harper Lee. It takes place in Maycomb, Alabama,
during the Great Depression, when racism was very prominent in many communities, especially in
the South. The story is narrated by the main character Scout Finch, who is a tomboy and possesses
great intelligence, which in turn exposes her to very mature situations. The main idea of To Kill A
Mockingbird is that you shouldn't spread lies about people that did anything wrong, for Boo
Radley, who is thought to be a monster, and Tom Robinson, accused of being a rapist, are people
who suffer because of lies. In the first seven chapters of the book, Scout, along with Jem. her older

that I personally enjoyed as they unraveled . I noticed the courage that were in the young children,
Jem, Dill, and Scout when they tried to get Boo Radley to get out of the Radley home and not only
do you see that in the children. Scout has her courage and sticks up for her classmates and keeps her
head high when her classmates insulted her father. One character whom I really admired was Atticus.

Philosophical Ideas In To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill A Mockingbird philosophical ideas
"To Kill A Mockingbird" (1960), by Harper Lee, emphasizes and displays many different
philosophical ideas. These ideas are about innocence, segregation, knowledge, and reality. Ideas
include the right for all races to be treated as equals, and not be judged or segregated by the color of
their skin. "To Kill A Mockingbird" especially emphasizes that children, as they grow into their teen
and pre–teen years, start to realize their environment and observe the way people act. This is the
idea of reality. Children will start having sophisticated and intelligent ideas whether adults like it or
not but the children will fight even if parents don't think they have a mind of their own. Children
start disobeying and showing signs of rebellion. The environment we live in influences the way we
think, it takes away our innocence because of bad things that happen, and give us a base to form
our ideas on. Two siblings; Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, and Jeremy Atticus "Jem" Finch. Their
Father, a southern lawyer defending a black–American man accused of rape and beating a white
woman. Jem and scout are 10 and 6 at the beginning of the book. But end up being 13 and 9 by the
end, Jem being the oldest. Jem and scout, along with many other characters in the book, like Tom
Robinson, Atticus Finch, and Charles Baker "Dill" Harris all have a message linked to them in the
book.
The main message is that the situations around jem, scout, dill, and even tom Robinson destroy
their innocence. The environment and drama that takes place make them see the world as it is.
"Atticus said to Jem one day, "I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go
after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a
Mockingbird."(90). I believe that the mockingbird in the quote symbolizes innocence. Jem is
confused on why killing a mockingbird is a sin and Atticus tells him that the mockingbird is pure.
Just like the minds of the children. The environment around them kills the purity and innocence of
the children and it relates to the mockingbird being dead.
The narrator of "To Kill A Mockingbird" is Scout Finch and as we read the book, we can see

To Kill A Mockingbird Argumentative Essay
Thesis: Prejudice is a prejudgment based on the preconceived ideas without knowing or experiencing
the real person or the culture.
Topic sentence #1: Prejudice is present as long as a person has a cognitive ability of having his or
her opinion. It is an automatic process of making judgement based on stories and the past. It may not
always be shown in the form of discrimination because it is subtle and unconscious. It can occur as
prejudicial thoughts without direct interactions.
Intro1: Prejudicial behavior is even observed from the 2–3 year old children. Young children make
assumptions about different people from their past observations and comparisons.
Quote1:
Analysis1: Socialization is invoked by experiences children have as they learn from their

In the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, racism lead to the judge's adjudication, causing Tom Robinson to

Quote2: Atticus tells his children, "There's something in our world that makes men lose their heads–
they couldn't be fair if they tried (Atticus)."
Analysis: Maintaining a high social status is one factor for prejudice. Individuals who have the
desire to be superior to another (ethnic) group can end up discriminating. An example from the past
was during the Gold Rush. The Chinese were disowned because the Americans feared the Chinese
would acquire wealth and gold. When the situation is incompetent, the innocent and helpless people
can be forced into being the scapegoat. Hitler's anti–Semitism aroused when he decided to take over

To Kill A Mockingbird Timed Essay "It's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Throughout To Kill A
Mockingbird, there is symbolism behind the title. Mockingbirds are portrayed as harmless and
innocent which relates to several characters in the passage. Although there are many characters that
can convey this symbolism, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson best fit the metaphor because they are
the most misjudged characters throughout the novel, they have not shown or caused any harm to the
people of Maycomb. The title, To Kill A Mockingbird, has a connection with the overall main idea
of the plot. It carries a large amount of symbolism in the book. According to Miss Maudie,

Tom Robinson is an innocent man, convicted for the rape of Mayella Ewell for being colored.
Tom is not guilty of this crime but the jury was afraid to speak the truth since the society of
Maycomb believes a white man's word is stronger and contains more justice than a colored man's.
Tom Robinson has testified that he helped Mayella with her labor because of his generosity but
when Mayella Ewell forces herself on Tom, he chooses to run away and not physically harm the
Ewell's in any way which allows the Ewell's to use him as an escape during the court–case.
Therefore, once Tom is killed, the truth is revealed. In the novel, Mr. Underwood submits a section
about Tom Robinson's death in the paper. In the passage, it states "He likened Tom's death to the
senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters." Through this quote, Mr. Underwood is showing how
the Ewell's killed Tom's innocence to the community. It proved that although the jury knew the truth,
they decided to take the easy way out in order not to cause any conflict and offend the large
population of Maycomb, the whites. In the process, they killed a mockingbird, one that caused no
harm to anyone through his kindness and generosity, Tom Robinson. In summation, Boo Radley and
Tom Robinson both convey the metaphor of the mockingbird best. They are both mockingbirds that
lived without being affected by the rumors of Maycomb and the rules of

To Kill A Mockingbird Main Idea
The main idea of the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, is about how Scout is going to
learn about evil forces in her life like racism and inequality. Scout is a 6–year–old girl, who is an
extremely smart for her age and is quite curious, has a brother named Jem, who is in the fifth
grade, her father, Atticus, who is a lawyer, and her mother, who died when she was two years old,
so she doesn't have her in her life. While living in the town of Maycomb, she is learning about the
inequality towards women and all the racism that is in this town too. This main idea is shown
several times in the first chapter, when it gives us an example of how the town's people are racist.
According to the book, "The sheriff hadn't the heart to put him in jail among the Negroes, so Boo
was locked in the courthouse basement.(Lee 11). Even though Boo did something mentally
unstable, he didn't receive the same punishment by the reason of being white, while if a person with
a different colored skin did that they would receive jail time. In chapter four, Jem, Scout's brother,
said, "I swear, Scout, sometimes you act so much like a girl it's mortifyin'"(Lee 38). At first, you
believe that this is rude, but then if you actually think about what he has just...show more content...
Harper Lee puts this main idea in the book to inform people of the hardships women and
African–Americans faced during these depressing times. By putting this in she is showing us how
the people here think, they believe that whites shouldn't receive as worse of a punishment as
African–Americans and being a woman is an insult. Even the children are raised with these ideas
of inequality, it doesn't seem wrong to the kids, for it is just part of life and being a woman is
worse than being a man. Harper Lee is showing us something that we may never honestly thought of,
but it is absolutely a major part in everyday life that started years

How Does Lee Demonstrate The Idea Of Courage
To Kill A Mockingbird Essay
Reading broadens our minds and touches our hearts. It creates greater understanding and compassion
in the reader through its characters and themes. Write an essay that addresses the ideas expressed in
this statement with reference to your class novel.
"You never really understand a person, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." With
over 30 million copies sold worldwide and claiming title to the prestigious Pulitzer Prize, "To Kill a
Mockingbird" is a classic novel written by Harper Lee that not only excites and educates the reader
but ultimately encourages them to re–evaluate their preconceptions and learn to denote an emotional
understanding of another's feelings or problems by putting...show more content...
Atticus challenged both Scout and Jem to do this which resulted in a new friendship and taught them
an invaluable life lesson about passing judgement. Consequently, the reader is able to take away
from the children's knowledge of deceptive appearances and have a better understanding of people
and the reasons behind their actions.
Moreover, Lee demonstrates the idea of courage through Mrs Dubose and Jem when he is forced
to go and read to her as a punishment for destroying her camellias. Before Jem met Mrs Dubose
courage to him was holding a gun in his hand. Mrs Dubose was a morphine addict and wanted to
overcome the addiction, "I wanted you to see what real courage was...it's when you know you're
licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." The dialogue between
Atticus and Jem stresses that courage is the inner desire to succeed and to do what is righteous, no
matter what humiliation or consequences it may bring. This is proven true in Mrs Dubose's
situation as despite the pain it caused her she succeeded, as she died free of her addiction. As a
result, Jem's initial ideas of bravery matures and thus allows the reader's to question their own
thoughts on what courage is to them.
Bravery is also exemplified by Atticus when he killed the rabid dog "Mr Finch this is a one–shot
job." Even though on the outside he appeared to be a pacifist, disliking guns and violence, Atticus
was a man of real

To Kill a Mockingbird Argumentative Essay
Tom Robinson, a black man in To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the main characters in this story
that causes controversy because of his skin color. Is the story's relevance based on Mr. Robinson
and his skin color? In my opinion yes, the book revolves all around his skin color and racism of the
time. Tom Robinson is treated unfairly because he was black not because of what he supposedly did.
The controversial subject matter in this book is immense in numbers, but out of all them, racism
stands out the most. A question that has come to mind after reading this book is, today is racism
still a hostile problem and as big as it was in the 1930s? Throughout this research paper I will gather
information about racism from the 30s, and also today....show more content...
Even after evidence was found, all of it would be questioned and the trial could last for weeks.
Blacks were persecuted more harshly and treated much more unfairly in the 30s. During this time
period Jim Crow laws basically made it to where blacks didn't have any rights at all. Jim Crow
laws started in the 1880s and lasted into the 1960s, a majority of American states enforced
segregation through "Jim Crow" laws. From Delaware to California, and from North Dakota to
Texas, many states could impose legal punishments on people for consorting with members of
another race. The most common types of laws forbade intermarriage and ordered business owners
and public institutions to keep their black and white clientele separated (Tischauser 57–68). The Jim
Crow laws affected Tom Robinson's life in many ways. He simply was segregated from the white
population. Tom was discriminated by almost everyone in the community he lived in. During this
time this was normal and blacks were thought to be inferior to whites. Some English Dictionaries
define 'Jim Crow' as the name for an implement that can straighten or bend iron rails; or, along with
'Jim Crowism', systems or practices of racial discrimination or segregation. The American English
Dictionary suggests that the name only emerged in dictionaries in 1904, but it was clearly used as
early as 1876.

To Kill A Mockingbird Essay Ideas

  • 1. To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis Essay To Kill A Mockingbird Analysis Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Harper Lee articulates coming of age in a town struck by racism. Scout begins the novel as a six year old girl who does not fully recognise how skewed her world is until she is nine and sees what it really means to kill a mockingbird due to the actions of a shy Arthur Radley. In the passage Jem and Scout are attacked by Bob Ewell; the father of supposed rape victim Mayella Ewell, in response to Jem and Scout's father Atticus embarrassing Bob during the trial of Tom Robinson. However, Arthur Radley comes out to save them, inevitably killing Bob. This means he will have to go through the burdensome court process, but the county sheriff, Heck Tate wants to change that and Scout needs to understands why. Furthermore Scout realizes what it's like to be Arthur Radley, always watching. Within the final two chapters,To Kill A Mockingbird conveys the theme that there's good and evil in coming of age throughout the book by utilizing symbolism, conflict, and character. First and foremost, prolific throughout the story is the mockingbird's representation as a medium. Tom Robinson was convicted of raping Mayella Ewell by only the word of a racist drunk and his daughter despite the evidence arguing against being strong. Tom Robinson is representational of the mockingbird because he does chores for Mayella like fixing her house up out of kindness. But when Mayella was confronted by her abusive father as to why a black man Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. To Kill a Mocking Bird Essay example Through the course of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem encounters a series of events that cause him to grow up. During Tom Robinson's trial, Jem's eyes were opened to the racism and prejudice of the South: loss of innocence, a major theme in the novel, is a realization of the cruelty and injustice in the world, and that one must develop a tolerance for it. Jem is young and carefree in the beginning of the novel. He is just starting to take on the responsibilities of an older brother: "Jem condescended to take me to school the first day, a job usually done by one's parents, but Atticus said Jem would be delighted to show me where my room was." (p.20). Atticus is trusting Jem to safely get Scout to school, and help her...show more content... In addition, Jem abandons all of his childish morals: "Jem looked the floor. Then he rose and broke the remaining code of our childhood. He went out of the room and down the hall. 'Atticus,' his voice was distant, 'can you come here a minute, sir?'" (p.187–188). Dill, Jem and Scout's best friend, ran away from his home and came to the Finch's house. Jem has broken "the remaining code of our childhood" by telling Atticus about Dill, rather than keeping it a secret. He has matured past his childhood years, and realizes that sometimes it is best to involve adults. Jem is exposed to the racism and prejudice of the South through Tom Robinson's trial, and it makes him question what he never thought twice about before. [insert lead–in] "'...if the jury's still out, you can wait with us. But I expect it'll be over before you get back.' 'You think they'll acquit him that fast?' asked Jem. Atticus opened his mouth to answer, but shut it and then left us." (p.277) Jem sees Tom Robinson's trial through eyes untainted by prejudice and discrimination. To him, Tom is obviously innocent. Atticus, on the other hand, is older and more cynical. He knows about racial discrimination, he knows it strongly influences a person's judgement, and he knows Tom will be found guilty. Jem realizes this when Tom Robinson is convicted. As a result, he learns that racism can cloud a person's judgement to the point that they will convict an innocent man. • 3. To Kill a Mockingbird Essay To Kill A Mockingbird Essay In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a major theme is the loss of innocence. Whether from emotional abuse, racial prejudice or learning, Boo, Tom, and Scout all lose their innocence in one sense or another. The prejudice that each character endures leads to their loss. Through the responses of Boo, Tom, and Scout, Harper Lee shows how each character responded differently to their loss of innocence. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbirdthe character of Boo Radley is the first to suffer the loss of his innocence. As a teen, Boo experienced trouble with the law and for his consequences his father imprisoned him in his own house. Because of the harsh consequences forced upon him by his father, Boo grew up without a...show more content... With the racial tension so high during this time period, Tom's innocence was lost before he could even defend himself. This was shown through Atticus's reply to Scout's question of, "Will we win?" Atticus answered no because the case was lost before it began. Tom Robinson's response to his loss of innocence was to simply run away from the problem that had befallen him. For his attempted escape Tom suffered the highest consequence, "They shot him,' said Atticus. 'He was running. It was during their exercise period. They said he just broke into a blind raving charge at the fence and started climbing over" (235). Due to Tom's decision on how to respond, he was killed even though he was placed in his position no thanks to himself. Tom Robinson chose poorly when it came to his response towards his loss of innocence and it cost him his life. The main character of the novel, Scout, was the only character that suffered a loss of innocence and responded in a way that did not ruin her life. During the novel Scout gradually lost her innocence due to the fact of her ever–increasing knowledge of the world. Being the child that she was, Scout had a kind of blind faith in her community that it was as good and as moral as she believed it to be, but she realized after the trial how wrong she was. • 4. To Kill a Mockingbird Essay Learning lessons is a very important part of growing up. Children learn new things every day of their life. Even adults learn something every once in a while. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the character Scout is very adventurous and loves to learn; she has many experiences that lead to her being taught many different things about life. On page 12 of Cliff Notes for this novel, John Sova writes "each experience is designed to give Scout a further understanding about certain things in life and about people. In one way or another, every episode leads to some type of learning experience for Scout". Scout learns a lot of different things about her town's views, the people who she's heard about but never really knew, and...show more content... Scout was also very into thinking that Boo Radley was a terrible monster of a man. She has never seen him in person, but all the stories Jem had told her made her believe that he was too scary to even think about. Jem explains Boo Radley to Scout by saying: he's about six–and–a–half feet tall, judging from his tracks, he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that's why his hands were bloodstained–if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time. (14) With a description like that, Scout thought that Boo Radley was the scariest man alive. Scout didn't know any better at the time than to believe whatever she heard about him from others. When Scout finds gum in the knothole of the oak tree near the Radley house, she starts to think that maybe Boo isn't so bad. When he saves Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell, they realize that Boo actually cares about them and wants to keep them safe. Scout and Jem always believed Boo to be evil, when he is actually a good–hearted human being. At the close of the novel, Scout talks about Boo to Atticus, saying that "he was real nice" (323). Scout learns that people are not always what they seem to be at first, and there is always something good underneath every harsh surface. • 5. Personal Narrative : To Kill A Mockingbird To Kill A Mockingbird Narrative Has anything ever happened in your life that changed you as a person? Jem, a character in To Kill A Mockingbird, breaks his arm and it helps shape him into the person he ended up being because it was a major event in his life. He was changed by this event because it was a major event, Bob was going to kill him so how he overcomes it will show the type of person he is. Major things that happen in your life help shape who you are today. One important thing in my life is when I tore my ACL the first time in eighth grade basketball. It was November 15, 2015, when I first tore my ACL. I was at basketball practice and we were doing a rebounding drill. I jumped up to rebound the ball, because I can hardly jump I landed before most of the other players and Charlie, one of my teammates, came down on my knee. I heard my knee pop. My knee caved in and I fell, feeling excruciating pain as I fell to the ground I just saw the ground moving closer and closer. As I fell to the ground I felt my body hit the hard gym floor. All that went through my head was "That hurt really bad!!!!" I was really sweaty, I could smell the sweat from the bodies, and I was tired from previous things we had done in practice but I just sat there screaming and balling. I started screaming and balling because my knee hurt so badly. I could taste the saliva from my mouth while I was lying there balling. One of the other players went into the locker room and grabbed my phone, I called my dad but he couldn't make out anything I was saying because I was still crying. My coach, Ms. Bolton, carried me to the bench while my dad was on his way. My dad carried me out to the truck then inside to the couch when we got home. Brock, my brother, went and picked up some crutches for me. I ended up going to the doctor about a week later and then on January 4, 2016, I had my first surgery. Coming out of surgery and waking up in recovery was the worst pain I've EVER felt. I came out of recovery and was screaming in pain because they didn't keep track of when I had last had morphine so I wasn't on track and I felt my whole leg right after surgery. Tearing my ACL was important because it made me who I am today and made me stronger by Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. To Kill a Mockingbird Essay There are many different types of symbols in our world today; in English literature as well as all around us on a day–to–day basis. In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird we follow a little girl, Scout, as she faces the truth about the world and its injustice. The central and most obvious symbol of this novel, as well as the title of the book, is the mockingbird. It represents the innocence and injustice in this story, represented by Tom Robinson and the events surrounding the trial, but also sets the theme of racial prejudice. Racial prejudice is a reoccurring theme of the book, which is evident in Tom Robinson's trial, but also a good element of the setting because the story is set in the southern United States, where there was much prejudice against blacks. Old Mrs. Dubose is a very racist woman. You can tell this by the quote she yells at the children on page 102 where she says, "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" Atticus has always told Jem and Scout not to let Mrs. Dubose get to them in the comments and threats that she yells at them from her porch, but this is the comment that sets Jem off. He takes Scout's baton that she is playing with and destroys the perfectly white flowers in Mrs. Dubose's yard; every last one of them, and then he breaks the baton as well. There are two symbols at play here that work with each other to create the irony of this scene. The first one is the flowers themselves; they are described as beautiful and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. To Kill A Mockingbird Theme Essay "To Kill a Mockingbird" Based on a best–selling novel by Harper Lee has the theme of the constant fight between different sides. It is realistic, good and bad, oppression and the law versus justice. The novel mirrored life back then and in a way can still resemble some things in modern time. People could relate and understand this book on personal levels, that why it was such a hit, now it is used as a life lesson or for educational purposes. The plot lies on the trial that Atticus takes on, he is assigned to be the defense lawyer for a black man accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell, who more reasonably was abused by her father Bob, this is likely because it was the 1930's and people were racist and closed minded....show more content... "Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop . . . somehow it was hotter then . . . bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. Men's stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three–o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum. . . .". The plot revolves around Scout Finch, who is 6 years old, and her older brother, Jem who live in sleepy Maycomb, Alabama, spending much of their time with their friend Dill and snooping in on their mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley. The plot is displayed in a real time and in a real place, Monroeville, AL, in the 30's, this supports my thesis that it can be determined as realistic. The books take a toll over the course of 2 years mostly focusing on the events that happen within the period of summertime. This all seems practical, small town, nosy kids. To Kill A Mockingbird Essay Examples During your confrontations with Scout in Maycomb, you bring up the various points about Scout's actions and how they are not pleasing to you, such as being friends with Walter Cunningham, and wearing breeches and overalls. During all of this, you bring up the problematic assumption of how she should dress and behave because of the gender roles which surround society. You first make this assumption when you are with Scout during christmas, when you said that Scout could never hope to be a lady because she wears breeches. This caused Scout to be more volatile, which led to Scout fighting Francis. Another time when you make this assumption is when you talk to Scout about Walter. You assume that Scout will pick up Walters bad habits which will ruin the Finchfamily name. This led to Scout resenting you even more than before. The last time you made the assumption is when Atticus talks to Scout and Jem about acting better because the Finches were created from generations of breeding. This led to Scout again resenting you, and even taking some of it out on Jem through fighting. The assumptions you make are caused by the fact that Scout doesn't truly...show more content... • 9. To Kill A Mockingbird Essay Introduction To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee. It takes place in the southern, racist town of Maycomb. The book takes place in the 1920's and follows the events of a girl named Scout. Lee really puts you in the pages of this amazing novel. She using events that happened in her life and adapts them to her characters. In this novel you can see racism and how bad it really was in very southern times. Through the book you can see the horrible horrors of racism. The book follows the events of Scout, a young adventurous girl, who is very outspoken and funny. She has a brother named Jem who is a very wise character and likes to take dares. During the summer a boy named Dill comes every summer. He likes to tell "stories" and how he is very mature for doing adult things. He is the character that is most immune to racism, because he did not grow up in a racist town like Maycomb. This theme of racism is evident in scenes involving Tom Robinson, Atticus states in the courtroom ""Which, gentlemen, we know is in itself a lie as black as Tom Robinson's skin", in this quote it is illustrated that the colour of Tom's skin is associated with the depravity of the crime committed, this idea that there is a link between one's colour and their actions is a theme that is a constant in our current society, as it is not unusual for a person to be exposed to stereotyping due to the colour of their skin. My favorite parts of the story were the themes and ideas about racism, prejudice, and understanding presented in it and following Scout's views and beliefs as she grew older and matured. Her increased understanding and acceptance of people who are different than her remind me of myself as I grew older. One of the main ideas of this novel is racism. The story takes place in a fictitious town located in Alabama that is very similar to many small towns in the South during the Great Depression. Almost all of the townspeople are racist and believe that blacks are inferior to all whites, even those who are considered white trash. Throughout the story, she climbs into the shoes of many people, such as Miss Caroline, Jem, and Boo Radley. Scout struggles to understand why Miss Caroline punished her and Atticus advises her to think of the incident from Miss Caroline's point of view. When Jem begins to act differently and not want Scout around him, she tries to walk in his shoes and feel what he is feeling. At the end of the story, when Scout stands on Boo Radley's porch, she sees the street the way he has always seen it and understands what he must have felt when watching everyone on it. While reading the story, I empathized with Boo Radley. When his father punished him and never allowed him to leave the house, I pitied him and thought that he would have turned out to be a good person as an adult if he hadn't made poor choices as a teenager and gotten involved with the wrong crowd. I also empathized with Mayella Ewell, who must have been extremely lonely all of the time. • 15. Philosophical Ideas In To Kill A Mockingbird To Kill A Mockingbird philosophical ideas "To Kill A Mockingbird" (1960), by Harper Lee, emphasizes and displays many different philosophical ideas. These ideas are about innocence, segregation, knowledge, and reality. Ideas include the right for all races to be treated as equals, and not be judged or segregated by the color of their skin. "To Kill A Mockingbird" especially emphasizes that children, as they grow into their teen and pre–teen years, start to realize their environment and observe the way people act. This is the idea of reality. Children will start having sophisticated and intelligent ideas whether adults like it or not but the children will fight even if parents don't think they have a mind of their own. Children start disobeying and showing signs of rebellion. The environment we live in influences the way we think, it takes away our innocence because of bad things that happen, and give us a base to form our ideas on. Two siblings; Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, and Jeremy Atticus "Jem" Finch. Their Father, a southern lawyer defending a black–American man accused of rape and beating a white woman. Jem and scout are 10 and 6 at the beginning of the book. But end up being 13 and 9 by the end, Jem being the oldest. Jem and scout, along with many other characters in the book, like Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch, and Charles Baker "Dill" Harris all have a message linked to them in the book. The main message is that the situations around jem, scout, dill, and even tom Robinson destroy their innocence. The environment and drama that takes place make them see the world as it is. "Atticus said to Jem one day, "I'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird."(90). I believe that the mockingbird in the quote symbolizes innocence. Jem is confused on why killing a mockingbird is a sin and Atticus tells him that the mockingbird is pure. Just like the minds of the children. The environment around them kills the purity and innocence of the children and it relates to the mockingbird being dead. • 16. To Kill A Mockingbird Argumentative Essay Thesis: Prejudice is a prejudgment based on the preconceived ideas without knowing or experiencing the real person or the culture. Topic sentence #1: Prejudice is present as long as a person has a cognitive ability of having his or her opinion. It is an automatic process of making judgement based on stories and the past. It may not always be shown in the form of discrimination because it is subtle and unconscious. It can occur as prejudicial thoughts without direct interactions. Intro1: Prejudicial behavior is even observed from the 2–3 year old children. Young children make assumptions about different people from their past observations and comparisons. Quote1: Analysis1: Socialization is invoked by experiences children have as they learn from their environment and friends. Analysis: Maintaining a high social status is one factor for prejudice. Individuals who have the desire to be superior to another (ethnic) group can end up discriminating. An example from the past was during the Gold Rush. The Chinese were disowned because the Americans feared the Chinese would acquire wealth and gold. Mockingbirds are portrayed as harmless and innocent which relates to several characters in the passage. Although there are many characters that can convey this symbolism, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson best fit the metaphor because they are the most misjudged characters throughout the novel, they have not shown or caused any harm to the people of Maycomb. The title, To Kill A Mockingbird, has a connection with the overall main idea of the plot. It carries a large amount of symbolism in the book. Tom Robinson is an innocent man, convicted for the rape of Mayella Ewell for being colored. Tom is not guilty of this crime but the jury was afraid to speak the truth since the society of Maycomb believes a white man's word is stronger and contains more justice than a colored man's. Tom Robinson has testified that he helped Mayella with her labor because of his generosity but when Mayella Ewell forces herself on Tom, he chooses to run away and not physically harm the Ewell's in any way which allows the Ewell's to use him as an escape during the court–case. Therefore, once Tom is killed, the truth is revealed. In the novel, Mr. Underwood submits a section about Tom Robinson's death in the paper. In the passage, it states "He likened Tom's death to the senseless slaughter of songbirds by hunters." Through this quote, Mr. Underwood is showing how the Ewell's killed Tom's innocence to the community. It proved that although the jury knew the truth, they decided to take the easy way out in order not to cause any conflict and offend the large population of Maycomb, the whites. In the process, they killed a mockingbird, one that caused no harm to anyone through his kindness and generosity, Tom Robinson. In summation, Boo Radley and Tom Robinson both convey the metaphor of the mockingbird best. Scout is a 6–year–old girl, who is an extremely smart for her age and is quite curious, has a brother named Jem, who is in the fifth grade, her father, Atticus, who is a lawyer, and her mother, who died when she was two years old, so she doesn't have her in her life. While living in the town of Maycomb, she is learning about the inequality towards women and all the racism that is in this town too. This main idea is shown several times in the first chapter, when it gives us an example of how the town's people are racist. According to the book, "The sheriff hadn't the heart to put him in jail among the Negroes, so Boo was locked in the courthouse basement.(Lee 11). Even though Boo did something mentally unstable, he didn't receive the same punishment by the reason of being white, while if a person with a different colored skin did that they would receive jail time. In chapter four, Jem, Scout's brother, said, "I swear, Scout, sometimes you act so much like a girl it's mortifyin'"(Lee 38). Moreover, Lee demonstrates the idea of courage through Mrs Dubose and Jem when he is forced to go and read to her as a punishment for destroying her camellias. Before Jem met Mrs Dubose courage to him was holding a gun in his hand. Mrs Dubose was a morphine addict and wanted to overcome the addiction, "I wanted you to see what real courage was...it's when you know you're licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." The dialogue between Atticus and Jem stresses that courage is the inner desire to succeed and to do what is righteous, no matter what humiliation or consequences it may bring. This is proven true in Mrs Dubose's situation as despite the pain it caused her she succeeded, as she died free of her addiction. As a result, Jem's initial ideas of bravery matures and thus allows the reader's to question their own thoughts on what courage is to them. Is the story's relevance based on Mr. Robinson and his skin color? In my opinion yes, the book revolves all around his skin color and racism of the time. Tom Robinson is treated unfairly because he was black not because of what he supposedly did. The controversial subject matter in this book is immense in numbers, but out of all them, racism stands out the most. Even after evidence was found, all of it would be questioned and the trial could last for weeks. Blacks were persecuted more harshly and treated much more unfairly in the 30s. During this time period Jim Crow laws basically made it to where blacks didn't have any rights at all. Jim Crow laws started in the 1880s and lasted into the 1960s, a majority of American states enforced segregation through "Jim Crow" laws. From Delaware to California, and from North Dakota to Texas, many states could impose legal punishments on people for consorting with members of another race. The most common types of laws forbade intermarriage and ordered business owners and public institutions to keep their black and white clientele separated (Tischauser 57–68). The Jim Crow laws affected Tom Robinson's life in many ways. He simply was segregated from the white population. Tom was discriminated by almost everyone in the community he lived in. During this time this was normal and blacks were thought to be inferior to whites. Some English Dictionaries define 'Jim Crow' as the name for an implement that can straighten or bend iron rails; or, along with 'Jim Crowism', systems or practices of racial discrimination or segregation. The American English Dictionary suggests that the name only emerged in dictionaries in 1904, but it was clearly used as early as 1876. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
