1. Plagiarism And The Ethics Of Plagiarism
Many scholars and parents have heard the term "plagiarism" while talking about writing essays,
poems, and other works. Plagiarism is defined as "to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of
another) as one 's own" by Merriam–Webster dictionary. While plagiarism may be denoted as
stealing one's work without credit, a more vast and broad definition usually applies to college level
work. Every college and university has their own handbook and code of conduct on what exactly "
plagiarism" is defined as, and what are the consequences for breaking these rules. Collin College's
"Scholastic Dishonesty", Boston University's "Academic Conduct Code", and Yale College's
"What is Plagiarism?" all have different perspectives as to what "plagiarism" is and how it is defined.
Collin College's "Scholastic Dishonesty" is set up in six sections, four having bolded first words,
showing what each paragraph is about. The wording in the sections are very formal; making it
seem as though to steal someone's work to be childish or immature. The tone, set by the wording
and overall flow of the sentences, is very serious; it makes it seem as though committing one of
these crimes is as bad and just as serious as committing murder. The list of scholastic dishonesties,
general scholastic dishonesty, plagiarism, cheating, and collusion, is very open ended. Collin
College even goes as far as saying "while specific examples are listed below, this is not an exhaustive
list and scholastic dishonesty may

A research discovered that students who use materials from the Internet without citation is increasing
on 23 college campuses. In the last year, a group of college undergraduates (38%) admitted that they
used to take some sentences in the Internet without mention of source. Half the students thought
Internet plagiarism was common in learning. According to Professor Mc Cabe, he said that many
students believe that materials in the Internet was public knowledge and they did not need give any
mention about it. In the past year, twenty–two percent of undergraduated students admitted to cheat
on their test because test was a severe competition of students and they wanted to have a good jobs

Plagiarism and Academic Integrity
Plagiarism can take many forms and may happen in varying degrees. It can occur when people
don't even attempt to write their own essay and copy someone else's work in its entirety. It also
could be partially their own with much copied from another source. This becomes plagiarism when
the source isn't identified and credited. It can even occur if the source is falsely identified or
quotation marks are not included.
Teachers and the institutions they work for expect students to have academic integrity. Including not
participating in the theft of their or someone else work through collusion. Coffeyville Community
College is among these institutions

4. Plagiarism In College Students
Instructors main goal is to teach their students to their best ability. When the student in turn uses
someone else's ideas instead of allowing the lessons they have been taught to create their own,
everyone in the situation loses. The teacher is unable to evaluate the student's understanding and the
student is unable to truly grasp the concept of the lesson. With information so easy to attain, the
lines to what is and isn't plagiarism can be misleading for students. However, there are multiple
resources a student can use before committing the act of plagiarism, such as asking their professor
or school librarian. In the case where a student lacks the motivation or procrastinates and chooses to
plagiarize for ease, the student clearly doesn't

Plagiarism takes various forms. A student may cheat doing something as extreme as purchasing a
paper, hiring someone to write a paper or turning in a paper freely provided by a friend. Many
students unknowingly commit Plagiarism by failing to properly cite their sources crediting the
authors. Still others cite, but plagiarize by coping much too much and writing far, far too little of their
own synthesized thoughts and ideas. Students must be careful about copying too much. If a paper is
mostly other writers' material, that can be considered Plagiarism, even if the student credits their
sources.

Another technique teacher's use is to have a sit down conference with the student writer to see how
familiar the student is with their own work.
Students have tools for checking their own paper for Plagiarism violations too. Plagiarism
prevention tools like Turnitin and SafeAssign provide options for student submission papers.
Consequences of Plagiarism
Most colleges and universities have Academic Honesty policies that address Plagiarism. At Sierra
College, consequences of Plagiarism include a failing grade for the assignment or the entire course.
Also, a student may be referred to the Disciplinary Officer for more server consequences like
suspension or expulsion.
Tips For Avoiding Plagiarism
In order to avoid Plagiarism a student must use proper citations. According to a journal article by
Sarah Estow, Eva Lawrence, and Kathrynn Adams, "Results suggest repeated hands–on exposure to
the topic of plagiarism improves plagiarism avoidance and understanding." (Estow, Lawrence and
Adams 2012)
Writing Style Standards and Plagiarism

Harvard. In order to avoid Plagiarism, each style standard has specific citation requirements that
must be carefully implemented. The particular style used for a paper

6. Why Plagiarizing Should Be Expelled From College
Cheating or Plagiarizing should be expelled from college
Students caught cheating or plagiarizing should be expelled from college because they are
dishonest, thieves, and will end up becoming poor professionals. With this in mind, students
should be aware of what it takes to be honest in college. College life is not a game. If students
steal the professor's test or uses their classmate work, they don't deserve to be called ''students.''
How will people view them if they take information from a classmate who works hard on their
assignment? This kind of students should be expelled for cheating. For example, last semester a
student from my math class came into the classroom before class was about to begin and went
through the professors desk and found the answer key while the professor wasn't in class....show

For example, if a student is really smart and he or she can use the computer and steal information,
and run up credits card bills. One of my best friends is from high school he was a very smart kid
before the school Dean told him he couldn't come back to school anymore because of a grade
point average was class low every day, and getting into physical fights with other students. He was
very frustrated when he heard the news that he wasn't ever coming back to school. It was his
senior year of high school and he wanted revenge, a cool kid turning into a criminal. He went
back to school at night when nobody was on campus. He broke a glass door window with a
hammer and went to the cafeteria and stole a bunch of money from the cash register, went to the
office took couple of jewels than all of a ''suddenly'' the emergency bell ranged. He tried to make
an escaped but there were bunch of cops outside the front of the school. He was surrounded. They
handcuffed him and he was placed on the top ten list crime. It will stay in your records for the rest

Plagiarism in Colleges and Universities is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. This is one
of the most crucial tasks for students that take online courses. This paper will look at the tools for
detecting plagiarism and the pros and cons of using the plagiarism checker in the nursing curriculum.
Most academic concerns are based on student morals. Plagiarism detecting tools are a better source
related to website or internet plagiarism such as a student's awareness of peer behavior. According
to McCabe et al. Perception of peer behavior is an important factor in academic integrity McCabe
and Trevino (1993, 1996, and 1997). In other words, if students recognize that most of their peers
are going online to plagiarize, they may be more obliged to plagiarize themselves.

There are several different types of plagiarism. An example of this is when a student gets ideas
from a writer's work and doesn't cite the source properly. Also, when a student is writing a research
paper and they are getting thoughts from another author and not citing the source and trying to pass
it off as their own work is considered plagiarism. Many students including myself didn't know that
this was considered plagiarism in writing

Dear fellow students: I have noticed that the plagiarism rate at Sheridan College have greatly
increased and it is a big issue. Today, plagiarism is perceived to be a growing problem in
universities and colleges. It is an act of taking information and claiming it as your own. Plagiarism
is wrong because you deny yourself the opportunity to learn and practice skills that may be required
in the future, you are disobeying the rules of the school and you deprive author's credits for their
hard work. The purpose of professors giving assignments in school is to help students know their
capability in verbal language. Plagiarism will not help students understand the topics as it will create
laziness in students. As students continue to plagiarize, they deny themselves the opportunity to

Most of us are planning on going on to bigger and better things after high school, whether it be
college, or straight into careers we wish to pursue. In the midst of all this planning and preparing
for our futures, we rush through our lives, and our homework. As seniors in high school there are
many things we have to get done in short amounts of time, but we need to start making time to
dodge plagiarism. Plagiarism is more than just getting a low grade on an essay, it is having future
colleges and jobs see your use of plagiarism on any applications. As students wishing for success in
our future, we need to be more aware of the consequences of plagiarism and how its importance will

Once we get into the "real world" the costs for our mistakes will not result in losses of good
grades, but will result in loss of money, and pride. An article written by Joy Lanzendorfer (2016)
tells the story of Rachel Ann Nunes, who had become an "unwitting victim of plagiarism" (par. 1)
after she posted her "self published book" (par.1) on Amazon. Amazon allows for easy access to
books and documents, causing many incidents of plagiarism in books, and losses of money for the
original authors. Lanzendorfer (2016) writes "Some books are copied word–for–word while others
are tinkered with just enough to make it tough for an automated plagiarism–checker to flag them.".
Going to trial later in the year, Nunes sued "the anonymous person" (Lanzendorfer, 2016, par. )
$150,000. Not only did Nunes lose money in her sales, but she was stressed to the point where
"she couldn't sleep or write and gained 20 pounds" (Lanzendorfer, 2016, par. 7). The
consequences of plagiarism effect more than the person who did the plagiarising, it affects the
original author who put all the time and effort into their work, to see it only be stolen. According
to Lanzendorfer (2016) "Writing a novel is a form of creative expression, and having is stolen by
someone else, many say, can feel like a personal violation.". If every author feels the way
Lanzendorfer describes in her article, it would have made for many upset writers after Kaavya
Viswanathan had stolen small parts of other authors books and put them into her own novels in
2006 (Plagiarism Today, 2012, par. 11). Viswanathan was rising in the charts and her books were
becoming more and more popular when she had been caught for plagiarism and her publishers had
"eventually pulled the book and revoked the deal" (Plagiarism Today, 2012, par. 11). Not only was
she losing money from her plagiarism, but she was chancing

11. Essay about Plagiarism: Students Are Not To Blame
Is plagiarism really occurring on college campuses? Should it be considered a serious offense? Do
the students who plagiarize know that what they are doing is wrong? These are some of the
questions that Edward M. White discusses in his essay "Student Plagiarism as an Institutional and
Social Issue." Being a professor himself, White sees firsthand the occurrence of cheating on college
campuses. He claims that blatant plagiarism "subverts the very nature of education and reflects some
aspects of what is worst in American society" because it is morally wrong (202). The backing for his
claim is the fact that plagiarizing is stealing someone else's words. Thus he warrants that anything
morally wrong undermines education and shows...show more content...
Should all students who plagiarize be punished? How do we decide who gets punished? White
states that "even though we must defend ourselves against burglars and muggers, however much we
may sympathize with whatever caused their behavior, we are not really called on to excuse away
their depredations" (202). Likewise, he believes that we should not allow people to steal others'
words without some kind of punishment. I believe that there should be some kind of punishment, but
a teacher should not be able to punish a student for plagiarizing, unless the teacher has made sure the
child knows how and when to cite things. Every teacher should go over the policy on plagiarism at
the beginning of the course instead of expecting the students to have learned the rules. As White
states, "we should all expect that much plagiarism will naturally occur unless we help students
understand what all the fuss is about" (203). White is very logical in his thinking that students
should not be expected to know things without being taught.
With any essay that a person reads, the reader wants to know that he can trust his source. Ethos is
the author's, or piece's, credibility. One thing that readers might look at is the year the piece was

plagiarism has gotten worse. We now have more places to plagiarize from since almost everyone has

Undoubtedly, plagiarism is a multi–pronged problem. Students are well versed in what plagiarism is
and what the consequences entail for plagiarized writing samples. In contrast, I have observed
students who are unable to incorporate information they find on the Web into their own writing

component that will help students differentiate between the two and foster critical thinking skills

Written language is a more formal act of communicating and thereby, greater expectations are
made. Whereas, spoken communication allows for more mistakes and often such mistakes go
unnoticed because there is not time for reflection while maintaining a relevant conversation. Not
only are there greater expectations for assigned writing; but the writing choices are bland at best
and uninteresting at worse, a recipe for plagiarism; especially from struggling learners. To further
illustrate this point, I worked with four students this school year who were required to write a
five page research paper on the Presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson's New Deal Policy. The
assignment details were vague and the only dialogue of plagiarism consisted of: "Don't plagiarize, I
will be checking for plagiarism." Students were given three class periods and the weekend to finish.

is a serious crime. That is why every college has policies about plagiarism. These policies have the
similar punishments, such as giving failure, suspension, and expulsion, depending on the number of
times a student plagiarized. However, the colleges also have different punishments. For example,
Centennial College has a more detailed policy than George Brown College. On the other hand,
George Brown College's policy is stronger than Centennial College as there are no warnings. George
Brown College and Centennial College are strict about plagiarism, and both colleges punish

Plagiarism is a very important topic that needs to be addressed with students at all phases of their

information from a source and using it as your own (Bethel, 2015). Plagiarizing can be a very
easy thing to do if you do not pay attention, but it can also be easily avoided. The most important
thing to do is make sure that you are citing your sources and citing them properly (Bethel, 2015). I
think that for me, this is the hardest thing to avoid. I am always afraid that I will cite sources
improperly and be charged with plagiarism. I have been afraid of plagiarism ever since I wrote my

Plagiarism is a topic that is consistently brought up in many areas of education.1 In every syllabus
presented to students, there is a section that refers to plagiarism and academic integrity. Plagiarism
can be defined as "the act or instance of stealing or passing off ideas or words of another as one's
own."2 Despite this being an important piece of information; students may overlook this material
and still plagiarize. In a study from the University of Toronto, 90% of senior pharmacy students
admitted to performing at least 1 form of academic dishonesty over the course of their program.3
Recent literature also states that plagiarism has begun to show up more frequently in academic
institutions.2–6 This can be a result of increasing access to the internet, databases, and websites.4 In
professional literature, plagiarism can still be found in medical publications.2 This is an issue
because development of proper professional and ethical behaviors relies on honest academic
integrity.3 The purpose of this paper is to examine the current research on the reasons for plagiarism,
how plagiarism affects professionalism and proper ways to prevent this issue from happening for
graduate students.
The major reason for why these academic dishonest acts can happen is related to students not
understanding what is considered "cheating" or plagiarism.3,4 There are different levels of
plagiarism which students perceive differently regarding the seriousness of the act.2 In a survey of
