Rey Ty Electronic Handouts of How to Write Research Proposals, Research Based Academic Papers, and PowerPoint Files

  1. 1. Electronic Handouts of How to Write a Research Proposal, a Research Based Academic Paper, and a PowerPoint File Rey Ty 1. My Positionality: I’m using my personal experiences in writing research papers as examples. 2. Please note that conferences and publications have their own formats. Also, note that formats change from time to time. 3. I can share with you my papers in Conference Proceedings. However, due to copyright reasons, I cannot post my peer-reviewed journal articles. You can search and find them. 4. When conducting research, don’t write a paper for the sake of writing a paper: you must identify and respond to a problem. 5. Don’t simply regurgitate and summarize theories and literature. You must provide some critique and recommendations as well as provide new insights. While you are following the “scientific method” in writing a research-based academic paper, there is room for creative writing! Start and end with a bang, if possible. 6. There are different types of research: literature review, theoretical, empirical, philosophical, historical, and more. Each one is guided by a different set of “rules.” You can create new knowledge when you write a proper literature review (read Torraco). 7. Rubric for different types of research proposals http://www.slideshare.net/reyty1/rey-ty-elements- of-a-research-proposal-dekalb-il-northern-illinois-university 8. For the sake of standardization for your final class paper, I am requesting you strictly follow this PPT template for training you to how to prepare a conference paper. After all, you will submit your proposal and class paper to a Conference.Note, however, that formats vary from Conference to Conference and from journal to journal and they change through time. Nothing is cast in stone. http://www.slideshare.net/reyty1/research-presentation-template-rey-ty 9. Sample Consent Form: http://www.slideshare.net/reyty1/rey-ty-sample-consent-form-for-academ 10. Please note that each PPT and paper here would show a variation of the application of the PPT template above. 11. As you know by now, your literature review must include: summary analysis, critique, and recommendations. 25. You must provide at least one chart for your final paper(R3), as you have done so for video review (R1)& article review (R2). 26. Important Note: a. For students, conferences, and publications in political science (or other social sciences): Your papers must end with “Implications for Political Science (Comparative Politics, Realist Theory, Ethnography, etc.) in Policy, Practice, and Further Research” b. For students, conferences, and publications in Higher Ed: Your papers must end with “Implications for Higher Education in Policy, Practice, and Further Research” c.
