  • Undesirable: I can’t tell you the number of places that I’ve lived that I never thought about going and didn’t think that I would like (e.g., PA, OK, IN, MI). They turned out to be places of tremendous blessing. I first came in contact with our Minister of Music (Donna Brown) in Indiana over 20 years ago. Respond: Some avenues of opportunity (i.e., God’s calling) come only once in a lifetime and if you pass it up can change the rest of your life. For example, the call to the Friendship Baptist Church in Schnectady, NY in 1996. Had I taken that pastorate, how would my life have changed? Would my first pastorate in Hawaii have happened? Partner: God chooses to include us as parnters in accomplishing His will but God can certainly get things done even if we don’t cooperate. See Esther 4:11-14
  • Jonah 1:1-9, “The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish.” 7 Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” 9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.”
  • What was God’s first activity in response to Jonah’s getting on the boat going to Tarshish? v. 4, “Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea . . .” (See Psalms 135:7)Activity: God’s movement was so definitive that the ship on which Jonah was traveling was about the break up. Note that Jonah’s actions had an adverse impact on other people. “sailors were afraid” Sometimes we are lead to believe that our actions occur in a vacuum but they don’t as this case shows. Human response: Cry out to their gods. Even people who don’t know our God will cry out to something, anything in the time of crisis. At these moments we have opportunity to share our faith. Throw cargo overboard. A usual tactic on the seas (see Acts 27:17-18) Human efforts to combat an unstoppable storm.
  • While all of the activity was happening up on deck, where was God’s man? (end of v. 5)Interesting that a non-believer has to tell a believer to pray. That’s a pretty sad state of affair when non-church folks have to tell US to pray. Did Jonah have bad luck with the casting of lots? Ever try to do your own thing and find out that things tend not to go your way?
