REVEAL - Social Media Verification - brochure

Content that is posted on and shared via Social Media networks has had a profound effect on how we communicate. It changed the way information is spread and consumed dramatically. This also had significant impacts on traditional ways of information gathering and distribution. Social Media can have both positive and negative effects. It can be used for various purposes, ranging from effective disaster management to news reporting and the intentional spreading of false information such as propaganda or marketing. In order to better evaluate and classify content residing in Social Networks, it is necessary to filter and assess its information value in terms of credibility, trustworthiness, reputation, popularity, influence, authenticity and proximity. What is the REVEAL project about? REVEAL focuses on verification technologies, tools and strategies. It aims to develop tools, components and strategies that aid journalists and enterprise community managers in identifying, assessing and verifying User Generated Content (UGC) on Social Networks. In REVEAL, we aim to reveal and analyse much more than bare content. The analysis framework for assessing the credibility of information found in Social Networks is based on three main pillars: Contributor, Content and Context. Joint analysis of the validity of Contributor, Content and Context provides a more thorough approach for revealing truthfulness.

In order to better evaluate and classify content
residing in Social Networks, it is necessary to
filter and assess its information value in terms of
credibility, trustworthiness, reputation, popularity,
influence, authenticity and proximity.
What is the REVEAL project about?
REVEAL focuses on verification technologies, tools and
strategies.
It aims to develop tools, components and strategies that aid
journalists and enterprise community managers in identifying,
assessing and verifying User Generated Content (UGC) on
Social Networks.
In REVEAL, we aim to reveal and analyse much more than bare
content.
The analysis framework for assessing the credibility of
information found in Social Networks is based on three main
pillars: Contributor, Content and Context.
Joint analysis of the validity of Contributor, Content and
Context provides a more thorough approach for revealing
truthfulness.

What challenges need to be tackled?
Analysing and verifying Social Media content and thus making
it usable (for, in the REVEAL case, journalists and enterprise
community members) represents a number of challenges.
These include (but are not limited to)
• Accessing and then sifting through huge volumes of
data in order to then analyse these according to specific
criteria, depending on user needs
• Dealing with various content types (audio, video, text,
images) residing in different repositories (e.g. different
Social Networks)
• Making sure data analysis is carried out in a legally
compliant way
How could REVEAL help modern journalism?
REVEAL results are expected to aid journalists and media
organisations in numerous ways. To start with, we expect
more detailed knowledge and insights into ways journalists
are dealing with Social Media content, focussing especially on
verification processes. Tools and methods to be developed in
the course of the project are furthermore expected to:
• facilitate the dealings with large volumes of information
• aid in the verification process of Social Media content
• make the above processes faster and more efficient
• make it easier for journalists to deal with the challenges
presented by the rise of Social Media content
• utilise Social Media for the benefits of consumers (e.g. by
providing information faster, being more reliable, using a
greater variety of sources etc)

  • 2. Content that is posted on and shared via Social Media networks has had a profound effect on how we communicate. It changed the way information is spread and consumed dramatically. This also had significant impacts on traditional ways of information gathering and distribution. Social Media can have both positive and negative effects. It can be used for various purposes, ranging from effective disaster management to news reporting and the intentional spreading of false information such as propaganda or marketing. In order to better evaluate and classify content residing in Social Networks, it is necessary to filter and assess its information value in terms of credibility, trustworthiness, reputation, popularity, influence, authenticity and proximity.
  • 3. What is the REVEAL project about? REVEAL focuses on verification technologies, tools and strategies. It aims to develop tools, components and strategies that aid journalists and enterprise community managers in identifying, assessing and verifying User Generated Content (UGC) on Social Networks. In REVEAL, we aim to reveal and analyse much more than bare content. The analysis framework for assessing the credibility of information found in Social Networks is based on three main pillars: Contributor, Content and Context. Joint analysis of the validity of Contributor, Content and Context provides a more thorough approach for revealing truthfulness.

  • 5. What challenges need to be tackled? Analysing and verifying Social Media content and thus making it usable (for, in the REVEAL case, journalists and enterprise community members) represents a number of challenges. These include (but are not limited to) • Accessing and then sifting through huge volumes of data in order to then analyse these according to specific criteria, depending on user needs • Dealing with various content types (audio, video, text, images) residing in different repositories (e.g. different Social Networks) • Making sure data analysis is carried out in a legally compliant way
  • 6. How could REVEAL help modern journalism? REVEAL results are expected to aid journalists and media organisations in numerous ways. To start with, we expect more detailed knowledge and insights into ways journalists are dealing with Social Media content, focussing especially on verification processes. Tools and methods to be developed in the course of the project are furthermore expected to: • facilitate the dealings with large volumes of information • aid in the verification process of Social Media content • make the above processes faster and more efficient • make it easier for journalists to deal with the challenges presented by the rise of Social Media content • utilise Social Media for the benefits of consumers (e.g. by providing information faster, being more reliable, using a greater variety of sources etc)
  • 7. How could REVEAL help managers of Enterprise Communities? Analysing the content that is posted in (mostly closed, often company-wide) Enterprise Community networks is to aid companies and organisations using such features in various ways. Research results are expected to: • show how staff and customers act and behave in Entreprise Community networks, including an analysis and verification of what is being posted • lead to new insights into how this information could be used to the benefit of the organisation overall, or for particular tasks such as product development, workflow improvement, identification of experts / thought leaders in particular areas and the like.
  • 8. What exactly are we working on? REVEAL plans to bring together a diverse set of technologies in order to aid in the verification of Social Media content. The project consortium clustered these in the domains Contributor, Content and Context. Below, we outline what technologies & modules we are dealing with. Contributor The analysis of the validity of Contributor concerns parameters such as trust, reputation and influence of an information source. • Community detection & profiling • Contributor influence score per topic • Contributor profile classifier (looks for relevant trusted sources per topic) • Stylometry (aims to discover style of contributors) • Contributor role analysis (initiator, participant, supporter, etc) • Trust and credibility models
  • 9. Content Content validity is expressed through parameters such as the language used, the history and possible manipulations performed on the content. • Semantic segmentation of crawled HTML pages • Entity detection based on linguistic analysis • Full text indexing • Text relation discovery (looks for near-duplicates) • Provenance of material (looks where content originated) • Multimedia geolocator • Multimedia similarity (looks for near-duplicate images & videos) • Multimedia clustering (clusters images based on events) • Multimedia manipulation detection & history builder • Multimedia concept detector (assigns labels & image types)

Context Context analysis examines whether the ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘where’ of an online publication concur with each other. • Geospatial context modelling (aims to provide semantic context based on geolocation) • Geospatial context extraction (tries to do so by using metadata and contributor profiles) • Social context model (aims to provide social context of contributors) • Topical context model (aims to provide topically related entities in a semantic format) • Semantic context model (aims to provide semantic context by interlinking items with sematic relations) • Situation assessment framework (aims to allow for real- time situation ‘snapshots’ by data fusion)
