The Fulbright Program • Founded in 1946 • Supported by U.S. and host country budget • The world’s largest educational exchange program • Number of participating countries ≈ 150 • Fulbright Commissions in 50 countries • Number of grantees between 1946-2009 cca. 300,000 (105,000 U.S. citizens, 195,000 non-U.S.) • Fulbright Commission in Hungary since 1992 • Annual number of grantees: ≈ 30-35 American citizens, 30-35 Hungarian citizens
  4. 4. Grant opportunities • Graduate students (1 AY) • Researchers (3-9 months) • Lecturers (1-2 semesters) • Supplementary grants (travel only) • Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship (1 AY) • Teacher exchange program (school year)

Time Line for Hungarian Fulbright Applicants • Late February Announcement of grant opportunities • March - May Application period • May - July Initial processing, screening, interviews • October Selection, submission to Washington • February Final decision by the Board in Washington • March Notification of grantees • June Orientation for the outgoing Hungarian grantees • From August Program begins in the U.S.
