New York Fashion Week Wrap-up

  1. 1. NEW YORK FASHION WEEK: SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTS DATE: FEB 2018
  2. 2. X NYFW FALL 2018 Once upon a time fall collections were notably more conservative in design than that of Summer or Spring, with greyscale and darker tones taking over the runway. However, we are half way through Fall 2018 New York Fashion Week and can see the runways flooded with blocked colours and an overall dose of escapism. On February 8th it all kicked off in the great city of New York. Since the first show, we have seen robots, UFO’s and even Cheetos hitting the runway. Could it be that creative directors are pushing towards escapism and fantasy thematics as a way to escape the current political climate of United States? It is clear that now so more than ever, creative directors are not afraid to push the boundaries and embrace individuality. The iconic designs already evident in the NYFW Fall 2018 shows will undoubtedly define the upcoming fall season and trickle down to the fashion we see in retail stores. So what is on the horizon for Fall 2018 and what is happening on the runway? Well, we’ve sifted through the shows so far and have pulled out 6 things we love: 2 2

  4. 4. X YOUR TEXT CHROMAT’S SHOW Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Chromat flooded his fall collection with bright block colours which we are more than ready to embrace in our own wardrobes this Fall. This NYFW, Chromat brought the snacks to the runway, literally. In an unexpected turn, his models strutted their stuff with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos over their body and incorporated into the pieces. Cheetos were even zip-tied to one model whilst she snacked… on the runway… as you do. It’s clear that Chromat understands cultural trends as in mid 2017 Cheetos opened a pop-up restaurant in NYC where every single dish incorporated Cheetos. It was one of the most exclusive spots to get a booking in the whole city with a wait list more than 1,000 people. Clearly Chromat has tapped into the demand and it has not failed him. More than anything, we adore that in Chromat’s show diversity was winning the runway. The inclusive line up of models including various races, ethnicities and sizes was a breath of fresh air. The representation of all type of women and core message of body positivity makes this show one of our favourites.

  6. 6. X NumberTwo ALEXANDER WANG IS LEAVING NYFW LIKE A BOSS
  7. 7. X YOUR TEXTALEXANDER WANG The Corporate Takeover After recently announcing he will no longer be showing at NYFW, Alexander Wang’s Fall Show was his last. At the 4 Times Square, the show #wanginc was fierce with a corporate twist. It was the modern interpretation of a female CEO. The runway featured 80’s updos, office-ready ensembles and reinvented athleisure, it was over all a heightened version of a social media “boss lady.” The runway was flooded with faux fur detailing, fanny packs and bedazzled bags, however, without a doubt our favourite aspect of the show was the collaboration with Korean label Gentle Monster. The Korean eyewear company focuses on “high-end experimentation,” striving to astonish consumers with their quirky designs. If you haven’t had a look at their innovative retail stores it is definitely worth a google. Gentle Monster brought mirrored, bejewelled and retro frames to the catwalk, intensifying the expression of female power.

  9. 9. X NumberThree JUICY COUTURE HELD THEIR FIRST NYFW SHOW AND DIDN’T DISAPPOINT
  10. 10. X YOUR TEXT GETTING JUICY Things are Juicy Couture held its first-ever NYFW show in Wolcott Hotel in Manhattan. Creative Director Jamie Mizrahi said he was inspired by the hotel’s deep history and that it encouraged him to dive into the depths of Juicy’s legacy. Instead of just showcasing their traditional terry material tracksuit, Jamie showed updated interactions of the classic that included animal print and sequins. We love that it’s 2018 and it’s Juicy's first New York fashion show, despite the brand reaching the height of its popularity in the 90s. From the days of Paris Hilton to their recent successful collaboration with Vetements, Juicy have reinvigorated themselves and have yet again made their brand relevant in the eyes of the consumer. As a trend, we were interested to see if Millennial Pink would still feature on the 2018 Fall runway. After looking at Juicy’s Fall collection it is evident that the colour is still relevant in fashion and will most likely be hitting the retail shelves again this season.

  12. 12. X NumberFour THE FACT THAT JEMERY SCOTT EXISTS
  13. 13. X YOUR TEXT TITLE INTERGALACTIC GOLD Jeremy Scott
You’ve got to love all that is Jeremy Scott. After another successful year as CD of Moschino his NYFW Fall collection was highly anticipated by the fashion community. His neon army marched down the runway with their block coloured, neon tights, builtin bras and cropped tracksuits. The models had iconic wigs in candy pink, iconic citrus, sky blue, mint green and lemon yellow matched with monochrome liner in a triangular shape for the eyes. It was silly but not stupid.
The whole show was a homage to the sci-fi film The fifth Element. The models were Leelo lookalikes with their kaleidoscopic prints, bondage stats and thigh-high moon boots. One model specifically stole the show, Gigi Hadid who has since been deemed an “intergalactic princess.”

The theme of “intergalactic” was carefully selected by Jeremy Scott to take show goers out of this world and distract them from the political climate and world events. Jeremy Scott stated “We have so much serious stuff to deal with every freaking day. I realised my role now more than ever is to bring some levity and some joy more than anything. That’s my protest. Bringing happiness, bringing joy. I think that’s the ultimate protest.”

  15. 15. X NumberFive THAT CUSHNIE ET OCHS CREATES THE FEMALE ARMY
  16. 16. X YOUR TEXT TITLE MINIMALIST SOPHISTICATION Bold Sensuality meets Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs started Cushnie et Ochs for women. For women, by women is their motto. Their vision has always pushed the limits juxtaposing bold sensuality with minimalist sophistication and absolutely love it. This vision has lead to sharp edges, block colours and an overall theme of sexy but wearable. The garments at their 10th anniversary show this year were inspired by architecture and were impeccably tailored dresses of the highest quality. The models stood behind white screens like a gallery exhibition and strutted down the runway looking fierce but feminine. We love how the company stands for women. The founders stated “we like to let a woman’s most feminine side shine. Her most beautiful, most alluring and seductive side.”The founders have built a successful business on slick architecture inspired dresses and have stuck to their sellable formula as they’ve evolved, not compromising on their distinct aesthetics. However, critics are pushing the question forward: Will Cushine and Ochs use their creative expertise to expand their creative palette in the future?

  18. 18. X NumberSix THE FACT THAT PHILIPP PLEIN’S SHOW WAS QUITE LITERALLY OUT OF THIS WORLD
  19. 19. X YOUR TEXT NAILING CREATIVE DIRECTION Philipp Plein Provocateur Philipp Plein took over a huge industrial space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for his iconic 2018 Fall Show that turned into an out of this world rave, dubbed by himself as “Space Invasion: Conquerer of the Universe.” To say he set the scene would be an understatement; fake snow cascaded down from the ceiling throughout the venue whilst a snowplow circled the venue, topped with dancers and laser beams. The extraterrestrial set up featured a giant spaceship, silver rock formations, a tunnel made from tinfoil and a transformer robot who greeted ex-Victoria Secret Model Irina Shayk on the runway.

The clothes on the snowy runway were all emblazoned with ‘Philipp Plein.’ The models appeared from behind the spaceships carrying metallic and bedazzled snow gear, nailing an intergalactic apre-ski look. Phillip Plein’s known for making headlines with his runways and he did not fail with his Fall 2018 show. His iconic creative direction and ability to think out of this world makes this show one of our favourites.
