- Thank you for inviting to and giving us such a great opportunity, and especially thank Mr. Pastrich for the setting. (I’m Yasuhiro Yamamoto, a student of college of international studies University of Tsukuba. ) The name of our team is "3Ecafe ProjectTeam". Including our team's introduction, I give presentation on the session's theme, "Balance of 3E".
- Here is the contents of my talk. At first I explain what our team is, secondly discuss the question about 3E, at last provide some tips for following dialogue.
- Then, the first of first question is what "3E" is. Of course Es of Environment, Energy, and Economy. Not just these literal meaning, it also emphasises that the World needs SYNERGISTIC development of these three elements for the “Low Carbon Society”. Therefore we believe The goal of the term “3E” is to realise the REAL society (not only IDEA) where is far more environment-oriented, energy-secured AND (not OR) economy-developed.
- In addition to the term "3E" and "Low Carbon Society", we highlight "Backcasting" as a fundamental. In order to realise the desired society by 2030 or 2050, it's necessary to Set a STABLE and FEASIBLE goal-vision, to achieve by STRATEGIC doing since now. Some aspects of the vision of future society are ---smart plug-in EV utility, or efficient pedal-driven vehicle. The core development contained in this vision is increace of Quality Of Life, technorogy introduction etc.
- Next question is what "CAFE" is. We name the team after "Science Cafe". Have anyone heard "Science Cafe", as a type of event? It's a rather fresh term grow popular these several years. Science cafés are live events that INVOLVE A FACE-TO-FACE CONVERSATION with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone, and take place IN CASUAL SETTINGS like pubs and coffeehouses. At a café you can… learn about the latest issues in science chat with a scientist in plain language meet new friends speak your mind talk with your mouth full In Tsukuba, where a lot of research institute get together, various science cafe are taking place and appreciated. One of our main approach is also to hold such a type of session, as described later.
- We combine the elements of "3E" and "CAFE". So in fact--- The 3Ecafe ProjectTeam, which consists mainly of students, is the group aims for--- On the current issue (of Tsukuba city); “3E” & "Realising Low Carbon Society / City”, *Opening these themes comprehensively to everyone *Producing encounter, conversation & information-sharing between various persons, of course including guest speakers. *Causing inspiration of ideas & approaches *Leading them to actions for solving the issue
- This year, we estabrish our principle as this, for sustainability of the aim.--- Under the banner of “3E”, which Tsukuba carries <Procedure>By serial holding of “CAFE” events & delivering info. about 3E via Web, <Practice>3Ecafe produces communication & info-sharing between various persons (local residents, scientists, students, businesspersons etc.) (originate inspirations & fusions)
- <Policy>3Ecafe facilitates collaboration of actors & their actions toward development of “3E” and we also make proposals by ourselves from students’ / citizens’ point of view <Mission>Contribute to creating the Low Carbon City Tsukuba
- Now, let's take a look of our main practice, holding a series of session &quot;3E Cafe&quot;. The first session in February last year we had an up-and-coming leader of Low Carbon Society idea as a guest presenter. This was planned by only 4 members, I remember... First harf is basic presentation, second half is time for Q&A and dialogue among attendants, with a cup of tea and some sweets. Maybe it was a model of how to use this COSTLY hall... Anyway, we set this style of event as base for following sessions.
- One of characteristic session was the 4th. We featured Japanese major Ad agency’s manager conducting governmental national campaign. So this time focused on &quot;Environment Communication Business&quot;, not science. (Oh, this lounge is costly too...) This theme (and the agency's fame) attracted much audience at large (, though we all woar out one's nerves for setting site and attending to the VIP).
- The latest session is on Environment Education. Before the 3E Cafe, we also held an exhibition of photos on the theme of &quot;Education for Sustainable Development&quot;. This time especially group dialogue got so active that won't come to end. ---In this way we promote the &quot;3E&quot; and &quot;LCS&quot;'s idea with providing occasion to chat.
- In addition to those 3E Cafe, we've created and published these works.
- Now I explain our attitude for &quot;Balance of 3E&quot;. Sinse before Tsukuba has had clucial problem that each actor is separated; scientists, students, local residents, gov.officials, biz.persons etc. aren't used to join hands for common theme. It could be applied to any society. Considering this situation, we lead to this idea; For balance of 3E, actors need to --- --first SHARE the concept of &quot;3E&quot; & &quot;Low Carbon Society&quot; themselves --second COMMUNICATE their own point of view, values and wants each other --third TAKE ACTION (by oneself or) in collab. with other actors in the society
- Applying it to the 3E Cafe; Taking place 3E Cafe --- ---provides the opportunity for people to understand & become friendly with the idea of &quot;3E&quot; / &quot;LCS&quot; ---let attendants come up with inspirations & fusions relating to 3E/LCS through casual dialogue ---and which leads to common awareness & consensus building on 3E/LCS ---motivate attendants to make a new step in collab. with others ---consequently it results to change lifestyles, market, society & gov.’s policy
- Now I bring up questions; &quot;Should 'Balance of 3E' (3E-balanced LCS) be conducted only by professionals?&quot;, &quot;Is Top-down policy led by some professionals not enough?&quot;. As a hint for questions, our member Kumagai-san shows key episode relating this topic.
