  1. 1. Digital Trends Spring - UK - March 2013 Countries covered: United Kingdom More than half of consumers now use a smartphone to access the internet, whilst a third have a tablet in theirhome. Already this is having a significant impact on behaviour, as entertainment and commerce activitiescontinue to shift towards mobile. Paul Davies, Senior Technology Analyst It appears Christmas 2012 prompted an explosion of tablet sales, as household ownership has now reached33%, up from 24% in September 2012. Far more consumers are now using mobile devices to access theinternet, as generally consumers prefer gadgets with multiple functions, something which may be harming thesales of more ‘specialist’ devices (such as digital cameras and eReaders). The introduction of 4G may not be a sole driver in prompting the purchasing of new mobile products in theshort term, but those who do use this service will use far more data as they download and stream more contentwhilst on the go. This report examines the trends in consumer technology and digital media in the UK. This is the first report in2013’s Digital Trends series, which looks at changes in device ownership and usage over the past threemonths.
