  2. 2. Date: 1596<br />Setting: Cagayan<br />Instigator: Magalat (w/ brother)<br />Cause: Resentment of the natives of the payment of tribute and the implementation of the polo y servcio<br />Start of the Revolt<br />
  3. 3. Capture & Release<br />The revolt was repressed and Magalatand his brother, including their kinsmen, were cast into the Manila exiles.<br />They were released through the persuasion of Dominican priests.<br />
  4. 4. Leadership<br />After his release from prison, Magalat returned to Cagayan and once again stirred a rebellion against the Spaniards.<br />When some Filipinos refused to participate in the rebellion, Magalat was said to have done “atrocious” acts on the natives.<br />
  5. 5. Defeat<br />Upon learning of Magalat’s return to rebellion, Governor-General Francisco de Tello de Guzmán, sent Pedro de Chavesfrom Manila with Spanish and Filipino colonial troops to stop the revolt.<br />They were able to defeat the rebels, and capture and execute several leaders under Magalat.<br />

Death<br />Magalat was not killed by the Spanish but by his own men in his head quarters after they had been promised a reward from the Spaniards.<br />His death caused the failure of the revolt. <br />“Had Magalat not been killed,” said Dr. Morga, “the war would have dragged on for many years, but with his death the province became quiet and peace was maintained.”<br />
