US Government Agencies Driving Cloud Computing • Office of Management and Budget (OMB) created the priority for cloud computing and issued budget guidance. • Federal CIO Council established a Cloud Computing Executive Steering Committee to develop strategy. • General Services Administration (GSA) developed a Web- based cloud computing storefront (Apps.gov) and is driving implementation. • Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is exploring how cloud computing can improve healthcare and government transparency • National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) is framing security and audit controls for cloud computing. • Defense Information Systems Agency is exploring options for the military.

After evaluation in 2010, agencies will deploy cloud computing solutions across the Government to improve the delivery of IT services. There will be an on-line storefront to enable subscribers to access lightweight collaboration tools, software, and platform and infrastruc-ture service offerings in a cloud environment. Cloud Computing Review Required in FY 2011, FY 2012 and FY 2013 Federal Budgets • FY 2011 Budget -- Federal agencies must review/consider a cloud computing option for all new and existing major investments. • FY 2012 federal agencies must develop an alternative analysis discussing how they could use cloud computing for all major technology projects. • FY 2013, federal agencies must provide a complete alternatives analysis for mixed life cycle projects where agencies are spending new money (known as development, modernization and enhancement) and steady state or operations and maintenance funding for how they could move to cloud computing.
