Romeo and Juliet 5 Paragraph Essay
In many literary works, there are methods that authors use to make a story better. In The Tragedy
of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, dramatic irony is the driving method. Dramatic
irony is something in which characters do not know something, but the reader or audience knows
what the true reality is. According to some researchers, "A staple of Elizabethan and
Shakespearean drama was dramatic irony" (Halio 25). Furthermore some researchers also belive
that dramatic irony is very prominent in the play, " One of the more prominent literary devices in
the play is irony" (Sauer 673). Romeo and Juliet, and also their friends and families face a lot of
instances of dramatic irony in the story. Dramatic irony creates suspense and adds to...show more

Due to the nurse being so unclear, Juliet thinks that both Romeo and Tybalt both have died. Once
things clear up, Juliet figures out that Romeo has killed Tybalt, and her first reaction to this is
anger toward Romeo. After things cool down, she feels bad that she has said this, and she takes
her words back. Once Juliet learns about the punishment Romeo gets she feels the worst she has
ever felt. Romeo was given the sentence of exile, which in the time period meant no connection
to people, whatsoever. Due to this Juliet knows that she might never ever see the love of her life,
at all. To Juliet this meant that there would be no more Romeo, "Juliet feels that Romeo is no
longer her lover, and she can't have him again" (Moffat 139). She started crying a lot after this, so
much that her parents had to come to her room and see what was going on. When Lady Capulet
inquired as to why Juliet was crying, Juliet right away said that she was crying about the horrible
death of Tybalt. Lady Capulet responds to this by saying, "Well, girl thou weep'st not so much for
his death, as that the villain lives which slaughtered him" (Romeo and Juliet 3.5.65–66). Juliet had
just tricked her mother into thinking that she wasn't crying for Romeo, but rather Tybalt. The
dramatic irony in this case is that the reader knows that Juliet is lying to her mother, but Lady
Capulet actually believes this, and goes along with it. Dramatic irony was a

In "Breaking the Five–Paragraph–Theme Barrier" professor Thomas Nunnally describes his
experience teaching the popular writing tool. The five–paragraph theme requires an introductory
paragraph, three middle paragraphs that each have their own ideas, and a concluding paragraph.
Nunnally believes that this writing model should only be used as a writing tool and not the backbone
to all essays (Nunnally). I agree with Nunnally's stance, but also think that by the age of sixteen,
students should no longer be given the opportunity to rely on the model for writing opportunities. **
The five–paragraph theme was created to be a general teaching tool for inexperience writers. It
allows the writers to easily formulate a structure essay. It tells you that you only need three
supporting details for your thesis and that each do not need to be in depth. Most teachers say that a
paragraph is only roughly 4–5 sentences long. As a result, if every paragraph is short then you're
only writing approximately 20–25 sentences. A writer can easily follow the structure given and
finish an essay in a well timely–manner. The model is effective for beginners, but ineffective for
professionals (Nunnally).
Until a certain point, the model is effective for writers. It is a practical, easy template that allows a
writer to quickly set up and then write an essay,...show more content...
Nunnally states its purpose to "provide[s] for effective inculcation of concepts such as unity,
coherence, and development (Nunnally)." The model is structured to unite each paragraph to each
other by using a thesis statement paragraph, three supporting paragraphs for said idea and finally, to
summarize your essay. The use of transitional words allows the author to smoothly connect each
paragraph and idea. Finally, the model develops chronologically. The author will introduce, prove
and conclude. The five–paragraph model fulfills its purpose for the inexperienced writers

5 Paragraph Essay Outline
Throughout all of high school, students are taught to write papers following the outline of a
five–paragraph essay. The five–paragraph essay is a format of essay having five paragraphs: one
introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with support and development, and one concluding
paragraph. This basic structure has proven to be effective for many students however the format
itself has been accused of being "rigid and arbitrary" as well as being accused of valuing mechanical
organizational schemes rather than in depth thinking. (1) Is the five–paragraph essay as flawed as
some people make it out to be? A five paragraph essay breaks down like this: The first paragraph
contains a one sentence (or maybe a two sentence) thesis statement, which

Preparing The 'Footstool' Method For Writing
The "Footstool" method for writing is the "five–paragraph theme" consisting of an introduction, body
and conclusion. The "Footstool" method for writing is the basic principle structure of writing.
Writing consists of many purposes and formats with different techniques used to create a "good"
essay. Hjortshoj takes a analytical view towards"Footstool" essays not stating whether they are
indefinitely bad or good rather they are abused building blocks towards a more substantial essay. The
limitations of a "Footstool" essay is uniformity, redundancy and inflexibility. The "Footstool" method
follows three major rules to good writing. The first rule, each paragraph must consist of three
sentences; which the "Footstool" method follows for every paragraph. The second rule, there should
be at least three paragraphs in the body, "Footstool" suggest that you must address subtopics or
points typically three in the body. Thus the "Footstool" essay format inherently follows some rules of

The structure is a easier more comprehensible and universal building block for writing
fundamentals. The method consists of basic parts being an introduction, body and conclusion; an
easy idea to grasp when learning to write. The "Footstool" method is arguably a "good" writing
method especially following a specific set of instructions. Through my high school years we were
taught the rhetorical triangle as a way to further our writing. The purpose of learning rhetoric was to
rejecting the idea of a format rather focusing on persuasion of a thought and the our purpose of the
writing. The rhetorical triangle could be broken down to emotions, message, and ethics. The method
focused on an appeal to these parts of

Five Paragraph Themes
The III Effect of the Five Paragraph Theme article by Kimberly Wesley is more about persuading
students to write other types of essays rather than just the common five paragraph essay that's been
taught for countless years. In my opinion, I prefer not to write my essays in the five paragraph
theme because it isn't remarkably conducive to not only high school students like me, but as well as
other writers. As of my own experience in writing throughout my school years, there's no doubt in
confessing that I have had more than three main ideas for a certain essay, while on the other hand,
there have been essays where I would struggle to come up with even two ideas! According to a
college student (my sister), I have been told that the FPT is not

English 1101 Thesis Statement
Writing for the Real World
Don't be fooled, even though the title of my English 1101 course was "Let's Make a Game" I do
not enjoy designing or constructing games. What I learned from making them however, has
already changed the way I write and communicate. In high school, every essay or piece of literary
work was typed in Times New Roman 12–point black and white font. Most of the time these
assignments were boring five paragraph essays written in the third person where I would try to
prove a thesis statement. Throughout this course I have learned that the real world does not work
in this manner. The best pieces of work are multimodal with design, color, pictures, and many other
electronic aspects. If Facebook was just a compilation of black...show more content...
Artifact Two had two parts: an essay on how my game best reached my target audience, academia,
and a four–minute pitch, where my audience was the members of the Georgia Conservancy and
potential investors. The target audience and the mediums used in Artifact Two were both vastly
different than in Artifact One, but the same principles applied. The essay was just a written
document while the pitch used an oral, nonverbal, and visual medium. I was more than comfortable
with the essay as I had written several research papers in high school. My main thesis in this essay
was that a "race to the finish" game type spurs competition, and according to recent studies this helps
foster more effective education and learning while competition makes the game fun and addictive.
These two traits cause a wider audience to play the game and increase the amount of people
learning about the Georgia Conservancy in a quick and competent manner. I used research and
reports to prove this statement and a copy of my essay can be found in the right hand column. In
this situation, long black and white paragraphs are acceptable because researchers are more
interested in the content than the way it is displayed. The four–minute pitch, however, was a
different story. I had never given an oral presentation this long, but I used the skills I had learned to
make it successful. I first made a

English 111 Reflection
Writing is a skill that improves over time with experience and exposure to different concepts.
English 111 provided me with new skills and information that allowed me to enhance my writing
abilities. As a student, I was given the opportunity to explore and develop my own writing process.
This course explained, in depth, the components of a college level paper and correct grammar rules.
By creating and following my own writing process, understanding the correct flow/components of a
paper, and improving my grammar skills my writing improved tremendously. Through taking the
course, English 111, I was able to develop as a writer and improve my writing abilities.
I have found that understanding and being comfortable with the writing process is...show more

One disadvantage of high school was that our teachers focused very little time on grammar;
therefore, I never gained a good foundation in correct grammar. Over the years this has hurt me in
my writing because proper grammar is crucial in writing. By going to the learning center and
receiving help from Professor Cox I was able to recognize repeated grammar mistakes within my
papers. One very common mistake I made throughout all my papers was not inserting a comma
after a subordinating clause at the beginning of a sentence. I noticed that I had a tendency to
always start sentences with subordinating clauses, but would never put in a comma afterwards.
Once I recognized this mistake and learned the correct way to fix it I started paying close
attention to this grammatical error, making sure I did not make it again. Therefore, towards the
middle to end of the semester I no longer made these errors in my papers. A good example of this
correct grammar technique can be found in paper number four numerous times, "When applying to
PA school, people need to beware of the programs pre–requisites because they vary between
programs." The comma between "school" and "people" is the correct use of a comma after a
subordinating clause. Another grammar mistake I continuously made was putting a comma in front
of the words "therefore" and "however" when a semicolon was needed. I was taught in high school,
that you always put a set of commas around

Good Parenting Essay
Good Parenting
What makes a good parent? People have always tired to find out the answer, because what makes a
good parent makes a good family and what makes a good family makes a good society and finally
what makes a good society makes the world we live in a good one. Actually it is family where all
the social ills come from. It is family that predetermines what kind of society we will have
tomorrow, because the society of tomorrow will be born to and moulded in the family of today. So
if we want to find out what makes a good parent and try to change the society we'll be living in
we've got to start right now. So let's start.
What makes a good parent? Many people think that it is impossible to answer this question, because

But as soon as children start feeling that their parents care too much, they try to get back at them
and do just what their parents don't want them to do. On the other hand kids who face lack of
freedom may end up turning into introverts afraid to speak to other people or not as social (which is
not a bad thing though).
I believe that next thing any parent must not forget about is trust. Being consistent with your child is
of paramount importance because that's how trust is supported. Being consistent is not changing the
rules half way through the game. Being consistent is not promising rewards that kids will never see.
Being consistent is not threatening punishment without carrying it through. From the very first day
on Earth children put trust in their parents and it must not be betrayed because once it is, once
children find out they have been lied to, you will have to literally put yourself out to win it back.
Communication. Being able to communicate well builds confidence and charisma. Parents should
not be afraid to talk to their children. They should not jump down through their throat when they are
curious about something either no matter how stupid it may seem. Parents should be able to look
at everyday things and events through the eyes of their children who are new in this world and
have little knowledge of it. Everyday experiences can give children a wonderful chance to explore
and learn and it must not be taken from them by their

Walking inside the typical composition class, one can expect to see the students crafting the
five–paragraph essay or working on a persuasive piece as they try to argue they side of an in–class
debate. Composition classes do not only work on a studentГs writing, they also get the students to
think through their writing (at least the good ones do). There is a certain well–accepted style to
teaching writing in the traditional composition class, and it works very well for many students and
teachers. However, should the line of comfort be crossed, and if so, how? Should composition
instructors grab a hold of a different writing style, making it the focal point of their pedagogies in
their writing classes? More importantly, if they do, what...show more content...

While BishopГs work on the topic of using creative writing in the composition classroom is crucial
to any understanding of the argument, Deborah Dean, in Г¬Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres
with Five Paragraphs,Г® also extensively explores the question I just raised, and does so by
bringing in the concept of Г¬genre theory.Г® In an explanation of Г¬genre theory,Г® Dean states
that, Г¬one way to make writing interesting is to create the experiences of the genre in the mind of
the reader and then tweak one or twoГ® (Dean 53). Using the example of a childrenГs fairy tale to
illustrate her point, Dean goes on to say that genre theory is a bit controversial, saying that Г¬if
applied without thought, it could mean a return to a focus on forms and product over processГ®
(Dean 53). Proponents of genre theory, however, feel just the opposite. To them, genre theory is Г¬a
more logical way to empower our students, to give them the ability to write in ways that will help
them be successful in the social situations in which theyГll find themselvesГ® (Dean 53).
Application of genre theory in the classroom Г¬is a process because it asks students to analyze the

Unteaching The Five– Paragraph essay by Marie Foley is a light hearted but argumentive piece
focusing on the way most school aged children are taught to write. Foley's main point comes down
to the very first words in the essay; "The five–paragraph formula confuses and alienates students and
undermines our most basic goals as writing instructors." Foley believes that by teaching children to
write in a formulated manner we are not letting them explore and learn through their own writing.
We are instead giving them the freedom to discontinue the thought process once they feel that the
essay they have produced meets the formula standards they have been kept to, and refuse to part
with. Marie Foley then brings up a critique by William Coles on

Summary of Unteaching the Five-paragraph Essay
In an excerpt of Unteaching the Five–Paragraph Essay," Marie Foley reveals how the
Five–Paragraph Essay formula contradicts writing instructor's most basic goals. Foley shows that
the formula deters from generating individual thinking. In today's society, essays are used by
millions of people in order to express their different ideas. The Five–Paragraph Essay formula was
originally developed to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. Foley, however, believes
that this process eventually separates the student from his or her written expression and should be
used only as a first step tool for beginning student writers. Foley insists that the formula blocks
discovery, squelches authenticity and undermines the reader's need for...show more content...
The formula is comfortable and familiar to them. It becomes imprinted.
Foley contends that in addition to blocking discovery, the Five–Paragraph Essay formula squelches
the student's authenticity. Foley states, "filling the structure with the requisite 500 words, they go
through the motions of writing, but they seldom create something authentically theirs," (232). Foley
knew that students feel much more at liberty to freely express themselves in their personal journals
and in their letters to friends, but take on a different identity for the essay. The students' character,
personality, and convictions are locked away until given the opportunity to free write.
On a more serious level, coherence is undermined while being one of the writer's and reader's most
basic need. "The problem is not that the Five–Paragraph formula produces incoherence but rather
that it limits students to a superficial, predictable level or coherence," (232) states Foley. This
allows for students to throw any three liberally related ideas together for the body of the essays.
Once students fabricate a thesis statement that elucidates for their three ideas, the students feel they
have mastered structure. Foley states, "To be asked merely to enumerate three aspects of any topic
relieves the student of the need to probe relationships... it robs them of any motivation to do so,"
(232). Juxtaposition is not

time periods of history, all say the same: "Be who you are and don't let anything change that."

himself. In his mind, he deserved the punishment he was going to endure and wasn't going
condemn anyone else in the process. All in all, John was a noble man but, warped by temptation,
was made a man of slander. Furthermore, Reverend Hale was pushed to change also. Hale came
into Salem a stranger, but knew how to fix the problem the town endured. He never questioned
that God had a plan and always thought that something was either good or bad, with no gray area
in between. This thinking is challenged when Elizabeth, a pure person, is accused and then later
when John confesses. He knows that these people are honest and leaves the court for a period of
time. In the end, Hale is a desperate man, and even though knowing there is no witchcraft present,
he urges John to admit that he is not the one that should be punished. He has to question all the
rules he has lived by his whole life and pursue something he knows is incorrect. In essence,
Reverend Hale is pushed to his limits and is turned into a man that will be permanently in suspicion
of any standards he ever thought were true. In the end, as a reader, one is challenged to think, if put
in that situation, if he or she would falter from what is

However, God is able to give breakthrough once he called his people to ministry, that is why Paul
said "I can do all this through him who gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13)
It is not an easy task to carry out public leadership, you have to know almost everything, counseling
marriage on the verge breaking down, baptizing dying babies, administering Holy Communion for
dying individuals, leading marriage ceremony with unusual and complicated scenario. It is also not
easy to accept ministry as God calling rather than as job placement or vocational opportunity. It is
tough to accept the people, their culture, tradition and the whole identity. God called us to ministry
so that we will be able exercise his full authority (Matt 28:16–18) with full humility (Philippians 2:6,
2Cor 8:9, Rom 5:6–8). We have to deny ourselves and follow the footsteps ofJesus our Lord (Luke
9:23).
Finally a pastor has to know the distinctions of Authority and power. It is not uncommon to see
pastors are using power instead of the authority God given them. . "Authority" is responsibility that
derived from someone greater than us. That means the full responsibility

The Five Paragraph Essay and My Own Writing Style
The five paragraph essay is tremendously valuable to me as a student. I have realized throughout
my research that this format is seldom used by professionals; it is mostly used by students like
me. I believe I now understand why that is; it seems to be a very clear way of composing a paper.
It has a great deal of structure to it, and allows for more consistency and a better flow. Without
having such structure, it is easy to go off on tangents, and at the same time, confuse the reader. The
five–paragraph essay is essentially a sealant. Just like sealant fastens things together and helps ensure
that things are in order, well–fitted, and secure. So too, the five paragraph essay makes sure that all

Once I have identified my main themes, I start to freewrite by linking them all together. My process
of freewriting is similar to the process suggested in the lecture. The concepts in the lecture included
the five–paragraph essay, as well as its inner–component: prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing.
Prewrtitng is basically all of the actions that are taken during the drafting process. This often
involves brainstorming and the collecting of relevant data. It is the first step that was mentioned
and is considered to be a gathering process. My freewriting process primarily consists of
prewriting, although I mostly rely on my own thought process versus using alternative sources. We
learned that drafting is when a person's ideas start forming actual sentences. It is the process of
connecting ideas. This is precisely what I do when I freewrite, but prewriting involves more
supporting of ideas. Although revision was mentioned in the lecture, I tend to incorporate it into
my freewriting without it being a separate process. Revision is basically making the sentences and
the structure more succinct. It involves making the writing as clear as possible for the reader.
Editing was also covered in the lecture. It involves making sure the correct grammar is being used
and that the spelling is correct. I also use this process in freewriting, although much of it comes
automatically as I start typing. As a result of completing this analysis, I realize

the writer that left reader to think about the content of an essay.
Writing an essay, writers need to focus on the main ideas, brainstorm thoughts, look for resources

Five Paragraph Essay Example

  • 1. Romeo and Juliet 5 Paragraph Essay In many literary works, there are methods that authors use to make a story better. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, dramatic irony is the driving method. Dramatic irony is something in which characters do not know something, but the reader or audience knows what the true reality is. According to some researchers, "A staple of Elizabethan and Shakespearean drama was dramatic irony" (Halio 25). Furthermore some researchers also belive that dramatic irony is very prominent in the play, " One of the more prominent literary devices in the play is irony" (Sauer 673). Romeo and Juliet, and also their friends and families face a lot of instances of dramatic irony in the story. Dramatic irony creates suspense and adds to...show more content... Due to the nurse being so unclear, Juliet thinks that both Romeo and Tybalt both have died. Once things clear up, Juliet figures out that Romeo has killed Tybalt, and her first reaction to this is anger toward Romeo. After things cool down, she feels bad that she has said this, and she takes her words back. Once Juliet learns about the punishment Romeo gets she feels the worst she has ever felt. Romeo was given the sentence of exile, which in the time period meant no connection to people, whatsoever. Due to this Juliet knows that she might never ever see the love of her life, at all. To Juliet this meant that there would be no more Romeo, "Juliet feels that Romeo is no longer her lover, and she can't have him again" (Moffat 139). She started crying a lot after this, so much that her parents had to come to her room and see what was going on. When Lady Capulet inquired as to why Juliet was crying, Juliet right away said that she was crying about the horrible death of Tybalt. Lady Capulet responds to this by saying, "Well, girl thou weep'st not so much for his death, as that the villain lives which slaughtered him" (Romeo and Juliet 3.5.65–66). Juliet had just tricked her mother into thinking that she wasn't crying for Romeo, but rather Tybalt. The dramatic irony in this case is that the reader knows that Juliet is lying to her mother, but Lady Capulet actually believes this, and goes along with it. Dramatic irony was a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. In "Breaking the Five–Paragraph–Theme Barrier" professor Thomas Nunnally describes his experience teaching the popular writing tool. The five–paragraph theme requires an introductory paragraph, three middle paragraphs that each have their own ideas, and a concluding paragraph. Nunnally believes that this writing model should only be used as a writing tool and not the backbone to all essays (Nunnally). I agree with Nunnally's stance, but also think that by the age of sixteen, students should no longer be given the opportunity to rely on the model for writing opportunities. ** The five–paragraph theme was created to be a general teaching tool for inexperience writers. It allows the writers to easily formulate a structure essay. It tells you that you only need three supporting details for your thesis and that each do not need to be in depth. Most teachers say that a paragraph is only roughly 4–5 sentences long. As a result, if every paragraph is short then you're only writing approximately 20–25 sentences. A writer can easily follow the structure given and finish an essay in a well timely–manner. The model is effective for beginners, but ineffective for professionals (Nunnally). Until a certain point, the model is effective for writers. It is a practical, easy template that allows a writer to quickly set up and then write an essay,...show more content... Nunnally states its purpose to "provide[s] for effective inculcation of concepts such as unity, coherence, and development (Nunnally)." The model is structured to unite each paragraph to each other by using a thesis statement paragraph, three supporting paragraphs for said idea and finally, to summarize your essay. The use of transitional words allows the author to smoothly connect each paragraph and idea. Finally, the model develops chronologically. The author will introduce, prove and conclude. The five–paragraph model fulfills its purpose for the inexperienced writers Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 4. 5 Paragraph Essay Outline Throughout all of high school, students are taught to write papers following the outline of a five–paragraph essay. The five–paragraph essay is a format of essay having five paragraphs: one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with support and development, and one concluding paragraph. This basic structure has proven to be effective for many students however the format itself has been accused of being "rigid and arbitrary" as well as being accused of valuing mechanical organizational schemes rather than in depth thinking. (1) Is the five–paragraph essay as flawed as some people make it out to be? A five paragraph essay breaks down like this: The first paragraph contains a one sentence (or maybe a two sentence) thesis statement, which Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Preparing The 'Footstool' Method For Writing The "Footstool" method for writing is the "five–paragraph theme" consisting of an introduction, body and conclusion. The "Footstool" method for writing is the basic principle structure of writing. Writing consists of many purposes and formats with different techniques used to create a "good" essay. Hjortshoj takes a analytical view towards"Footstool" essays not stating whether they are indefinitely bad or good rather they are abused building blocks towards a more substantial essay. The limitations of a "Footstool" essay is uniformity, redundancy and inflexibility. The "Footstool" method follows three major rules to good writing. The first rule, each paragraph must consist of three sentences; which the "Footstool" method follows for every paragraph. The second rule, there should be at least three paragraphs in the body, "Footstool" suggest that you must address subtopics or points typically three in the body. Thus the "Footstool" essay format inherently follows some rules of good writing....show more content... The structure is a easier more comprehensible and universal building block for writing fundamentals. The method consists of basic parts being an introduction, body and conclusion; an easy idea to grasp when learning to write. The "Footstool" method is arguably a "good" writing method especially following a specific set of instructions. Through my high school years we were taught the rhetorical triangle as a way to further our writing. The purpose of learning rhetoric was to rejecting the idea of a format rather focusing on persuasion of a thought and the our purpose of the writing. The rhetorical triangle could be broken down to emotions, message, and ethics. The method focused on an appeal to these parts of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Five Paragraph Themes The III Effect of the Five Paragraph Theme article by Kimberly Wesley is more about persuading students to write other types of essays rather than just the common five paragraph essay that's been taught for countless years. In my opinion, I prefer not to write my essays in the five paragraph theme because it isn't remarkably conducive to not only high school students like me, but as well as other writers. As of my own experience in writing throughout my school years, there's no doubt in confessing that I have had more than three main ideas for a certain essay, while on the other hand, there have been essays where I would struggle to come up with even two ideas! According to a college student (my sister), I have been told that the FPT is not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. English 1101 Thesis Statement Writing for the Real World Don't be fooled, even though the title of my English 1101 course was "Let's Make a Game" I do not enjoy designing or constructing games. What I learned from making them however, has already changed the way I write and communicate. In high school, every essay or piece of literary work was typed in Times New Roman 12–point black and white font. Most of the time these assignments were boring five paragraph essays written in the third person where I would try to prove a thesis statement. Throughout this course I have learned that the real world does not work in this manner. The best pieces of work are multimodal with design, color, pictures, and many other electronic aspects. If Facebook was just a compilation of black...show more content... Artifact Two had two parts: an essay on how my game best reached my target audience, academia, and a four–minute pitch, where my audience was the members of the Georgia Conservancy and potential investors. The target audience and the mediums used in Artifact Two were both vastly different than in Artifact One, but the same principles applied. The essay was just a written document while the pitch used an oral, nonverbal, and visual medium. I was more than comfortable with the essay as I had written several research papers in high school. My main thesis in this essay was that a "race to the finish" game type spurs competition, and according to recent studies this helps foster more effective education and learning while competition makes the game fun and addictive. These two traits cause a wider audience to play the game and increase the amount of people learning about the Georgia Conservancy in a quick and competent manner. I used research and reports to prove this statement and a copy of my essay can be found in the right hand column. In this situation, long black and white paragraphs are acceptable because researchers are more interested in the content than the way it is displayed. The four–minute pitch, however, was a different story. I had never given an oral presentation this long, but I used the skills I had learned to make it successful. I first made a Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 9. English 111 Reflection Writing is a skill that improves over time with experience and exposure to different concepts. English 111 provided me with new skills and information that allowed me to enhance my writing abilities. As a student, I was given the opportunity to explore and develop my own writing process. This course explained, in depth, the components of a college level paper and correct grammar rules. By creating and following my own writing process, understanding the correct flow/components of a paper, and improving my grammar skills my writing improved tremendously. Through taking the course, English 111, I was able to develop as a writer and improve my writing abilities. I have found that understanding and being comfortable with the writing process is...show more content... One disadvantage of high school was that our teachers focused very little time on grammar; therefore, I never gained a good foundation in correct grammar. Over the years this has hurt me in my writing because proper grammar is crucial in writing. By going to the learning center and receiving help from Professor Cox I was able to recognize repeated grammar mistakes within my papers. One very common mistake I made throughout all my papers was not inserting a comma after a subordinating clause at the beginning of a sentence. I noticed that I had a tendency to always start sentences with subordinating clauses, but would never put in a comma afterwards. Once I recognized this mistake and learned the correct way to fix it I started paying close attention to this grammatical error, making sure I did not make it again. Therefore, towards the middle to end of the semester I no longer made these errors in my papers. A good example of this correct grammar technique can be found in paper number four numerous times, "When applying to PA school, people need to beware of the programs pre–requisites because they vary between programs." The comma between "school" and "people" is the correct use of a comma after a subordinating clause. Another grammar mistake I continuously made was putting a comma in front of the words "therefore" and "however" when a semicolon was needed. I was taught in high school, that you always put a set of commas around Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Good Parenting Essay Good Parenting What makes a good parent? People have always tired to find out the answer, because what makes a good parent makes a good family and what makes a good family makes a good society and finally what makes a good society makes the world we live in a good one. Actually it is family where all the social ills come from. It is family that predetermines what kind of society we will have tomorrow, because the society of tomorrow will be born to and moulded in the family of today. So if we want to find out what makes a good parent and try to change the society we'll be living in we've got to start right now. So let's start. What makes a good parent? Many people think that it is impossible to answer this question, because what...show more content... But as soon as children start feeling that their parents care too much, they try to get back at them and do just what their parents don't want them to do. On the other hand kids who face lack of freedom may end up turning into introverts afraid to speak to other people or not as social (which is not a bad thing though). I believe that next thing any parent must not forget about is trust. Being consistent with your child is of paramount importance because that's how trust is supported. Being consistent is not changing the rules half way through the game. Being consistent is not promising rewards that kids will never see. Being consistent is not threatening punishment without carrying it through. From the very first day on Earth children put trust in their parents and it must not be betrayed because once it is, once children find out they have been lied to, you will have to literally put yourself out to win it back. Communication. Being able to communicate well builds confidence and charisma. Parents should not be afraid to talk to their children. They should not jump down through their throat when they are curious about something either no matter how stupid it may seem. Parents should be able to look at everyday things and events through the eyes of their children who are new in this world and have little knowledge of it. Everyday experiences can give children a wonderful chance to explore and learn and it must not be taken from them by their Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Walking inside the typical composition class, one can expect to see the students crafting the five–paragraph essay or working on a persuasive piece as they try to argue they side of an in–class debate. Composition classes do not only work on a studentГs writing, they also get the students to think through their writing (at least the good ones do). There is a certain well–accepted style to teaching writing in the traditional composition class, and it works very well for many students and teachers. However, should the line of comfort be crossed, and if so, how? Should composition instructors grab a hold of a different writing style, making it the focal point of their pedagogies in their writing classes? More importantly, if they do, what...show more content... Of course, they are well–suited to teaching writing of any kind to their students, but could they not be more effective in doing so if they had the freedom to teach the typical Г¬five–paragraphГ® or Г¬persuasiveГ® as a piece of creative writing/literature? While BishopГs work on the topic of using creative writing in the composition classroom is crucial to any understanding of the argument, Deborah Dean, in Г¬Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres with Five Paragraphs,Г® also extensively explores the question I just raised, and does so by bringing in the concept of Г¬genre theory.Г® In an explanation of Г¬genre theory,Г® Dean states that, Г¬one way to make writing interesting is to create the experiences of the genre in the mind of the reader and then tweak one or twoГ® (Dean 53). Using the example of a childrenГs fairy tale to illustrate her point, Dean goes on to say that genre theory is a bit controversial, saying that Г¬if applied without thought, it could mean a return to a focus on forms and product over processГ® (Dean 53). Proponents of genre theory, however, feel just the opposite. To them, genre theory is Г¬a more logical way to empower our students, to give them the ability to write in ways that will help them be successful in the social situations in which theyГll find themselvesГ® (Dean 53). Application of genre theory in the classroom Г¬is a process because it asks students to analyze the social context Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Unteaching The Five– Paragraph essay by Marie Foley is a light hearted but argumentive piece focusing on the way most school aged children are taught to write. Foley's main point comes down to the very first words in the essay; "The five–paragraph formula confuses and alienates students and undermines our most basic goals as writing instructors." Foley believes that by teaching children to write in a formulated manner we are not letting them explore and learn through their own writing. We are instead giving them the freedom to discontinue the thought process once they feel that the essay they have produced meets the formula standards they have been kept to, and refuse to part with. Marie Foley then brings up a critique by William Coles on Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Summary of Unteaching the Five-paragraph Essay In an excerpt of Unteaching the Five–Paragraph Essay," Marie Foley reveals how the Five–Paragraph Essay formula contradicts writing instructor's most basic goals. Foley shows that the formula deters from generating individual thinking. In today's society, essays are used by millions of people in order to express their different ideas. The Five–Paragraph Essay formula was originally developed to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. Foley, however, believes that this process eventually separates the student from his or her written expression and should be used only as a first step tool for beginning student writers. Foley insists that the formula blocks discovery, squelches authenticity and undermines the reader's need for...show more content... The formula is comfortable and familiar to them. It becomes imprinted. Foley contends that in addition to blocking discovery, the Five–Paragraph Essay formula squelches the student's authenticity. Foley states, "filling the structure with the requisite 500 words, they go through the motions of writing, but they seldom create something authentically theirs," (232). Foley knew that students feel much more at liberty to freely express themselves in their personal journals and in their letters to friends, but take on a different identity for the essay. The students' character, personality, and convictions are locked away until given the opportunity to free write. On a more serious level, coherence is undermined while being one of the writer's and reader's most basic need. "The problem is not that the Five–Paragraph formula produces incoherence but rather that it limits students to a superficial, predictable level or coherence," (232) states Foley. This allows for students to throw any three liberally related ideas together for the body of the essays. Once students fabricate a thesis statement that elucidates for their three ideas, the students feel they have mastered structure. Foley states, "To be asked merely to enumerate three aspects of any topic relieves the student of the need to probe relationships... it robs them of any motivation to do so," (232). ( Dr. Seuss) "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." (Psalm 23:4) "God has given you one face, and you make yourself another." (William Shakespeare) These quotes, found throughout many different time periods of history, all say the same: "Be who you are and don't let anything change that." These are great words to live by, but, in time of weakness, does one stay true? Can even the good be twisted? This is a theme that is represented throughout The Crucible many times. It was a moot point though, because Elizabeth did the same thing for him, damning him to be tried for taking part in black magic. Only in the end did John Proctor feel any forgiveness towards himself. In his mind, he deserved the punishment he was going to endure and wasn't going condemn anyone else in the process. All in all, John was a noble man but, warped by temptation, was made a man of slander. Furthermore, Reverend Hale was pushed to change also. Hale came into Salem a stranger, but knew how to fix the problem the town endured. He never questioned that God had a plan and always thought that something was either good or bad, with no gray area in between. This thinking is challenged when Elizabeth, a pure person, is accused and then later when John confesses. He knows that these people are honest and leaves the court for a period of time. In the end, Hale is a desperate man, and even though knowing there is no witchcraft present, he urges John to admit that he is not the one that should be punished. He has to question all the rules he has lived by his whole life and pursue something he knows is incorrect. In essence, Reverend Hale is pushed to his limits and is turned into a man that will be permanently in suspicion of any standards he ever thought were true. In the end, as a reader, one is challenged to think, if put in that situation, if he or she would falter from what is Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Revision is basically making the sentences and the structure more succinct. It involves making the writing as clear as possible for the reader. Editing was also covered in the lecture. It involves making sure the correct grammar is being used and that the spelling is correct. I also use this process in freewriting, although much of it comes automatically as I start typing.
