  2. 2. The Houses of Parliament: the seat of the Government of the United Kingdom … and Big Ben (on the right): was named after Benjamin Hall who was in charge of its construction The London Eye: opened in March 2000
  3. 3. Royal Horseguards: they are not allowed to smile !! How serious they are !!! They are soldiers of the British Army and protect the Royalty Trafalgar Square and the statue of Admiral Nelson who won the Battle of Trafalgar against Napoleon Bonaparte
  4. 4. The Mall… On the way to Buckingham Palace, the Royal Residence, past Saint James’s Park
  5. 5. Piccadilly Circus,with its world-famous wall ads 10, Downing Street: the residence of the British Prime Minister A popular symbol… A double-decker

The Tower of London: was built as a fortress by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, then used to be a prison, and is now a touristic place where you can see the Crown Jewels BEEFEATERS: they are the guards and guides of the Tower of London. Up to the 1800s, they used to be paid part of their salary with beef ! Hence their nickname !
  7. 7. Two famous London museums The British Museum , famous for its vast collections of word art (ancient Egypt, Greece, China, …) The National Gallery: houses one of the greatest collections of European paintings
  8. 8. Saint Paul’s Cathedral : designed by architect Sir Christopher Wren Westminster Abbey: the traditional place of Coronation and burial site of British monarchs Tower Bridge: it was originally the only bridge crossing over the Thames, and is a bascule bridge
