  1. 1. About The Poet Sylvia Plath was born on October 27, 1932. She was an American poet ,novelist and short story writer. • She studied at Smith College and Newham College ,Cambridge. •She married fellow poet Ted Hughes in 1956. Plath suffered from depression. Ultimately in 1963 she committed suicide. •She is revered as one of the greatest poets of all time. The Mirror is one of her finest woks.
  2. 2. Theme The poem deals with our sense of anxiety when we start showing signs of ageing. Everyone wishes to stay youthful and beautiful all one’s life. However this, being against the law of nature, can never be possible. Hence we need to develop an inner strength to face all stages of life gracefully.

  5. 5. Stanza 2 The eye of a little god , four cornered. Most of the times meditate on the opposite wall. It is pink with speckles. I have looked at it so long I think it is part of my heart . But it flickers. Faces and darkness separate us over and over.

It has grown passionate about the wall and the wall has became a part of his heart. But the wall flickers and its image is distorted by darkness & the faces of the people.

  8. 8. Stanza 4 : I am important to her. She comes and goes. Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness In me she has drowned a young girl and in me an old woman Rises towards her day after day like a terrible fish. .
  9. 9. Significance of the title The mirror deals with the varied qualities – Exactness, truthfulness and its relationship with human beings ( here old women ) for years. The whole poem revolves around the mirror. Hence the title of the poem is appropriate.
