2. 2. FUNDAMENTAL of INFORMATION SYSTEM

Overview

System Concept

Component of an Information System

Types of Information System

Information System Activities

Globalization and Information Technology

 3. 3. Overview of Information System (IS)

Manual and computerized IS

The evolution of IS since 1950s from Electronic Data Processing system

Today’s Enterprise and global internetworking business IS

 4. 4. System Concept

A system is a group of interrelated components working together toward a common goal by accepting input and producing output in an organized transformation process

A system is a process that can be manual or automated that has many part like input, process and output

 5. 5. System Concept Cont…

Information System is an organized transformation process to produce information product from input data

 6. 6. System Concept Cont…

The system has three basic interacting components or function

- Involves capturing and assembling elements that enter the system to be processed

- Processing involves that convert input into output

- Output involves transferring elements that have been produced by a transformation process to their ultimate destination

 7. 7. System Concept Cont…

The system concept become even more useful by including two additional component. The component are feedback and control

Feedback – is data about the performance of system

Control – involves monitoring and evaluating feedback whether a system is moving toward the achievement of its goal.

 8. 8. Component of an Information System

The basic of IS model shows five major components

Peoples resources

Hardware resources

Software resources

Data resources

Network resources

 9. 9. Component of an Information System….Cont

People resources – includes All IS staff and end users.

Hardware resources – like machine and media used in information processing

Software resources – such as computerized instructions or program for peoples carried out their respective task called procedure

 10. 10. Component of an Information System….Cont

Data resources – consisting of alphanumeric, text, image, video, audio and others form of data which are stored in computer files like database

Network resources – represent the communication media, communication processors, network access and control software used to connect computers in any network

 11. 11. Types of Information System

There are three types of IS which support the operation and management of any organization

- Operation Support System

- Management Information System

- Others Classifications of IS

 12. 12. Types of Information System Cont….

Operation Support System

Transaction Processing System (TPS)

Process Control System (PCS)

Enterprise Collaboration System

- Processes data generated by business operation. The role is to support process business transaction, control industrial process, communication and collaboration and update corporate database

 13. 13. Types of Information System Cont….

Management Information System

Decision Support System

Executive Information System

- Focus on providing information and support for effective decision making

 14. 14. Types of Information System Cont….

Others Classifications of IS

Expert System

Knowledge Management System

Strategic Information System

Business Information System

-To support either operation, management or strategic application

 15. 15. Information System Activities

Input data resources

Processing data into information

Produces output of information product

Storage of data and information

Control of the system performance

 16. 16. Information System Activities Cont…

Input data resources

- accepting business transaction and other event.

-Process by input activities

-The input of data applied by input media such as keyboard or optical scanning.

 17. 17. Information System Activities Cont…

Processing data into information

- Using the specific software to perform the calculation, comparison, sorting, classification and summarizing

 18. 18. Information System Activities Cont…

Produces output of information product

- Produces information product is the goal of IS.

- Common information product includes messages, reports, forms and graphic images, which may be provided by video displays, audio responses, paper product and multimedia

 19. 19. Information System Activities Cont…

Storage data and information

- A basic system components of IS

- Storage is the activity to retain data and information in an organized manner for later user.

- The storage media used are magnetic storage device like hard disk, floppy diskette, compact disc, etc.

 20. 20. Information System Activities Cont…

Control of the system performance

- An important activity to measure the performance of IS.

-The control of performance is achieved by having system feedback about output, processing output and storage activities.

- The feedback must be monitored and evaluated to determine the system is meeting the performance standard.

 21. 21. Information System Activities Cont …

Business examples of the basic IS activities

Input – optical scanning of bar-corded tags on merchandise

Processing – calculating employee pay, taxes. And other payroll deduction.

Output – producing report and displays about sales performance.

 22. 22. Information System Activities Cont…

Storage – maintaining record on customers, employees and product.

Control - generating audible signal to indicate proper entry or sales data

 23. 23. Globalization and Information Technology

The global economy is increasingly dependent on the creation, management, and distribution of information resources over interconnected network like the Internet.

The business are expanding into global for their product and services.

 24. 24. Globalization and Information Technology….cont

The strategic changes of globalization is enabled by using information technology in internet, intranet, and other global computing and telecommunication network that are the central nervous system of today’s global companies.

Thank you
