  1. 1. Wakirikirik Red Elm (Ulmus rubra) Wakirikirik ci[ta[xu[ u[] eja wagina[ u[] eja maka u[]. Red elm is used for making fires, making rope & for making medicine. Wood harvested any time. Inner bark peeled in spring. January 2009
  2. 2. Kšo-hi -- Cattail ( Typha latifolia ) Wi]ci[hu reju rugop anaga waruc ;aje. Ks~o-hi hoz~iz~ic ra taniorohic eja hi ui e s~u u a. Wi]ci[hu na;ap hi;u anaga wi]ci[ ui e na. Dig cattail root to eat. Cattail fuzz was used in diapers. Make mats of cattail leaves. Harvest tubers early spring; down and leaves in fall.
  3. 3. Keca si White water lily ( Nymphaea odorata ) Keca si reju[ z~e;e nagopire s~u u a. Keca si reju na rugop aje. Tuc hi aje. They used their feet to get those lotus roots out. Dig the white water lily roots. Cook. Harvest roots in spring
  4. 4. Mahic – Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca ) Mahic horuce ra roha waruc pi[ ena. Hu ra anaga hika ak ra waruc ui ena. Many parts of the milkweed are edible. Shoots and flowers are edible. Shoots harvested early spring, flower buds early summer and pods in summer.
