  3. 3.  In the fifth day (‘PANCHAMI’) of the brightfortnight of the lunar month of ‘Magha’(January-February) of the Hindu Calendar VASANT = ‘Spring’, and ‘Yellow’VASANT PANCHAMI marks the end of Winter andthe beginning of Spring in most parts of Indiaand neighboring countries.
  4. 4.  On this day, Brahma-ji createdDevi Saraswati to removeignorance and to make humanbeings wise. She was given fourhands for mind, intellect, ego andalertness. Therefore, we worship MotherSaraswati – the Devi of wisdom,arts, education, discrimination Children are taught their firstletters We also worship ‘Surya’ (Sun) andMa Ganga (Ganges River)especially in northern India tothank them for providing lifegiving energy and water

It also represents the Soul.VEENA (Stringed instrument) being playedby herRepresents ‘speech’, music, arts, beauty.With speech or language, we cannot learnanything.JAPAMALA: Rosary of Beads in Her hand Represent the power and energy of letters(biijaakshara), and also faith and devotionVEDAS: Revealed Hindu scriptures in HerhandFour Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda,Samaveda and Atharvaveda) – the sourceof all knowledge and wisdom.Lotus flowers (Padma, Pankaj, Kamal) Represent Creation. And also the ability toremain pure in this world full of evil. LordShiva burned Kamadeva on this day.

HinduSadhus also wear ‘saffron’(yellow-orange) robes. In northern India, miles and milesof farmlands turn yellow fromMustard blooms
