What AVID is NOT! <ul><li> A remedial course </li></ul><ul><li> A dumping ground elective </li></ul><ul><li> A blow-off course </li></ul><ul><li> Study hall </li></ul><ul><li>* Remember, it is an HONOR to be selected into this program. AVID students have mounds of intelligence and lots of potential to thrive academically. Typically, they are the hardest workers in their classes and accept the challenge of more difficult courses. </li></ul>

AVID Eligibility <ul><li>Student Profile </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Can handle at least one advanced course suitable for student or has the potential to do so with AVID support </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>No more than three zeros during any grading period per class </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>No more than two failing six weeks averages for the year on most recent report card </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Regular attendance </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Good work ethic </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>No major behavioral issues </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>DESIRE! </li></ul></ul>

AVID non-negotiable #1 <ul><li>The AVID Binder </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Must be organized according to specifications </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Must be well-maintained by student </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Must be taken to all classes EVERYDAY! </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>*All paperwork from all classes will be kept in binder </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Binder checks (test grade) occur every two weeks or at random </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>*Per teacher approval </li></ul></ul>

AVID Grade Checks <ul><li>Three-week grade checks </li></ul><ul><ul><li>If a student has a 70-75 average at the three week period, he/she should attend tutoring with that teacher at least once a week until the grade rises. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If a student has a 69 or below average at the three week period, he/she should attend tutoring with that teacher at least twice a week until the grade rises. </li></ul></ul>

AVID Responsibility <ul><li>It is an honor and privilege to be an AVID student; therefore, we must uphold certain standards. </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Multiple zeros in classes </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Attendance issues </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Behavior issues </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Failure to maintain binder properly </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Failure to maintain acceptable grades </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>*If any of the above become a problem, AVID probation or removal may occur. </li></ul></ul></ul>

AVID Probation/Removal …boo! <ul><li>AVID grade policy </li></ul><ul><ul><li>If a student fails a class the first six weeks, the teacher will have a conference with him/her about the grade and carefully monitor future progress. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If a student fails again the second six weeks and it is evident that he/she is NOT doing everything possible to succeed (attending tutoring, studying, etc.), he/she will be put on probation for the third six weeks. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If a student fails again the third six weeks and it is evident that he/she is NOT doing everything possible to succeed, it is highly likely that he/she will be removed from the AVID program for the second semester. </li></ul></ul>

AVID Application Process <ul><li>Application Steps </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Complete application (all sections) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Turn in completed application to “AVID” box in YOUR SCHOOL’S main office by FRIDAY, May 6 th no later than 4pm. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Your child will be notified by email of an interview time in the next weeks after the due date. (We will come to your campus, and parents do not need to attend.) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If the committee feels the student is a good fit for the AVID program, he/she will be notified of acceptance by email around the last week of school. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>*Unfortunately, filling out and turning in an application does not guarantee admittance into AVID. </li></ul></ul>
