Art • The beginning of Estonian national art can be considered the 19th century • The first professional artist in Estonia was Johann Köler ( 1826-1899 ) • In 1919 Premium School of Art called Pallas was founded in Tartu • You can clearly see the traits of German expessionism in the art of 1920

  4. 4. Johann Köler • Johann Köler was a leader of the Estonian national awakening and a painter. • He was known by his portaiture andby his landscape paintings. • His most notable pictures depict the Estonian rural life in the second half of the 19th century.

  6. 6. Oleviste church • Oleviste church is the highest building in Estonia and was so in Europe in the 1959 • The church was named after a norweigan king Saint Oleviste • The church has suffered a lightning caused fire, with no remarkable consequences

Literature • Kristjan Jaak Peterson is considered the founder of modern Estonian poetry. • One of the most outstanding achievements in Estonian literature is "Kalevipoeg". • The most remarkable writers of the young generation are Andrus Kivirähk, Karl-Martin Sinijärv and Peeter Sauter.
