Oil (petroleum)

  1. 1. Oil (petroleum) Oil (petroleum) is one of the nonrenewable energy sources used most often.Oilfield in Saudi Arabia
  2. 2. In this lesson you will learn:• How the oil formed.• Where the oil produced.• The Refining Process of the oil (Petroleum).• The fuels that made from oil.• Products made from petroleum.
  3. 3. How the oil formed.Oil was formed from theremains of animals and plantsthat lived millions of yearsago in a marine environmentbefore the dinosaurs. Overmillions of years, the remainsof these animals and plantswere covered by layers ofsand and silt. Heat andpressure from these layershelped the remains turn intowhat we today call crude oil.The word "petroleum" means"rock oil" or "oil from theearth."
  4. 4. so far you learned:How the oil formed.• Where the oil produced.• The Refining Process of the oil (Petroleum).• The fuels that made from oil.• Other products made from petroleum.• Other facts related to oil (Petroleum).
  5. 5. Where the oil produced.About 100 countries produce crude oil and; thetop five producing countries in 2010 are:• Saudi Arabia (13%)• Russia (12%)• United States (9%)• Iran (5%)• China1 (5%)
  6. 6. So far you learned:How the oil formed.Where the oil produced.• The Refining Process of the oil (Petroleum).• The fuels that made from oil.• products made from petroleum.
  7. 7. The Refining Process of the oil (Petroleum). After crude oil is removed from the ground, itis sent to a refinery by pipeline, ship, or barge.Refining breaks crude oil down into its variouscomponents, which then are selectivelyreconfigured into new products. All refineriesperform three basic steps: 1. Separation 2. Conversion 3. Treatment
