  2. 2. Today we are living in an Information Society, of which information isthe core ingredient. If we need to survive as an information scientist inthis society, we should be acquainted with the current flow ofinformation. Conferences, seminars & workshops are those that can behandful to cope up with the global challenge.
  3. 3. Generally we can say that conference, seminar and workshop are thenarrower sense of the term meeting, which means an occasion whenpeople come together to discuss or decide something. But they arevaried in nature. These are briefly described here;Conference - A large official meeting, usually lasting for a few days, atwhich people with the same work or interests come together to discusstheir views.

A keynote speaker is invited to make the attendeeslucrative.Seminar – It is an educational event that feature one or more subjectmatter experts delivering information primarily via lecture anddiscussion.Workshop - A period of discussion and practical work on a particularsubject, in which a group of people share their knowledge andexperience. This format often involves students practicing their newskills during the event under the watchful eye of the instructor.
  5. 5. The goal of the conference is to bring together librarians, informationengineers, educators as well as experts and information professionals inother related fields, from both national and international level. Thespecific objectives of the conference are;1. To create awareness on the latest development;2. To explore the emerging technologies for delivering quality services;3. To offer an opportunity to put forth innovative ideas;4. To strengthen the academic collaborations and strategic alliances;5. To facilitate interaction with experts;6. 6. 6. Since the Library Association was formed at a conference in London in1877, it has staged an annual conference every year with the exceptionof the years 1914 and 1940 to 1945. The International Federation ofLibrary Associations (IFLA) came into being at the 50th anniversaryconference of the LA, with ALA as one of the founding members.The first conference whose title in anyway referred to “InformationScience” was the second international congress on information systemsciences at Hot Springs, Virginia, in 1962. This conference, was animportant step in identifying scholars from various disciplines withcommon goals of understanding information and the sciences relatedto it.
  7. 7. Library and Information Science comprise an interdisciplinary fieldconcerned with all phases of the information transfer process. The truescope of LIS is as yet unclear since the discipline is really in its emergentstage. Nevertheless, indications of the scope of LIS may be given byenumerating the sub areas that have been addressed thus far: Global Scenarios of Library Education & Practice Information Literacy E – Learning Digital Content Management System RFID and Smart Card Digital Preservation Digital Libraries E – Resource Sharing Knowledge Management Open Sources Software & Library Applications Open Access for Scholarly Contents
  8. 8. It is mentioned earlier, that the field of LIS is ever growing and everspreading. Now we will address some international conferences onsome adjacent areas of LIS:a. Knowledge Managementb. Digital Libraryc. Information Literacyd. Library Education
  9. 9. Increasingly questions about the future of Knowledge Managementarise. The subject field is relatively defused and scattered into divergingconcepts, perspectives and disciplines. The following conferences willexplore the trends about the future of KM;

  17. 17. Conferences provide a rare opportunity to get a feel for who the peoplein the field really are. They are therefore a great way to confirm thatyour chosen career path is right for you. Other benefits of conferencesare;1. Learn from others in your profession;2. Easier it will be to give your own presentation one day;3. Get a feel for what’s current in your field;4. Get ideas for projects, papers and presentations;5. You can get network;6. In the process of this networking you will be branding your business;7. Developing opportunities for collaborations;8. Enhancing access to key research;9. Raising the international profile and public acceptance;10. Ensuring continued growth;
  18. 18. A conference on a broad subject, is not a gathering of specialists allhaving the same research interests. Much of the communication whichtakes place in the conference, is necessarily more in the nature of theimparting of information than the exchange of the latest ideas. Aparticipant should leave a conference knowing more andunderstanding more than on arrival.
