Retail Store Design - Conceptual Plan

View a conceptual interior design plan for a retail store in downtown, San Francisco. In this mock project, Philippe Starck is opening a new flagship store that will feature his new line of home good products. Starck is known for his "tongue in cheek" designs, which is what led me to create a concept around the Seven Deadly Sins. The floorplan consists of seven different, unique rooms, each representing one of the seven sins: lust, greed, wrath, gluttony, envy, pride and sloth. Through use of color, materials, finishes, space planning and conceptual design features - I hoped to create an experience for the user throughout his/her journeyat the Philippe Starck Home Goods Store. From a broad perspective, inspirational design elements make a play on snakes, apples, roses, temptation, mystery, surprise and sin.</

Retail Store Design - Conceptual Plan

  1. 1. INSPIRATION COLLAGE BOARD RETAIL STORE DESIGN “Philippe Starck opens a new retail shop in San Francisco...” Philppe Starck is opening a new “tongue in cheek” flagship store in San Francisco for his latest line of home goods furniture. His new line will include furniture and accessories for bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and outdoor spaces. The selected site for the new retail store is located at 180 Sutter Street in Downtown San Francisco. CONCEPT: THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS Inspiration: “I like to open doors to the human brain.” - Philippe Starck Design Concept: The Seven Deadly Sins The design concept for the new home good store is centered on the idea of the seven deadly sins. Inspired by the above quotation, there will be a play on doors - where each door leads to a sinful element of the human brain. The floorplan will consist of seven different, unique rooms, each representing one of the seven sins: lust, greed, wrath, gluttony, envy, pride and sloth. Through use of color, materials, finishes, space planning and conceptual design features - I hope to create an experience for the user throughout his/her journey PRELIMINARY SKETCHES at the Philippe Starck Home Goods Store. From a broad perspective, inspirational design elements will make a play on snakes, apples, roses, temptation, mystery, surprise and sin.© Rebecca Jensen. 2013. 2. 2. LEVEL 1 FLOOR PLAN Left: This is the ground level floor plan for the retail store. As seen in the plan, the entrance section is visible from both level 1 as well as level 2. This level contains four of the “sinful” rooms as well as a checkout area. There is a staircase in the center of the floor plan, as well as a circular clear glass elevator. This floor also houses the greed room. This room has pennies as floor and wall coverings. In addition the coffee table base is a brain shape made out of dollar bills. Lastly, there is a tree representing “money growing on trees.” The gluttony room is in the far corner and it features kitchen items. There will be an interesting water wine display (see materials listed). The pride room features a crown-shaped headboard as well as wall coverings made from various awards and certificates (see materials listed). The lust room is also on this level, see perspective sketch for more details.© Rebecca Jensen. 2013. 3. 3. LEVEL 2 FLOOR PLAN Left: This is the second level floor plan. As seen in the plan, there is a storage area that takes up nearly half the floor. The storage area accommodates any extra inventory as well as a staff break room and staff restroom. The sloth room is for the lazy guests who just want to sit and relax. This area features out- door and indoor furniture. There is also a small section for guests to sit and watch the street passerbys. The wrath room features darker colors such as black, grey and blue. In addition, wrath is as- sociated with anger so there are a lot of sharp edges seen throughout the structural design. The envy room has a bathroom layout. Those who are envious of others typically suffer from self confidence issues or the “looking glass mirror” effect. Often times, they see someone they are not when looking in the mirror. With this, I’ve chosen a lot of reflective surfaces in this space.© Rebecca Jensen. 2013. 4. 4. PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS Left: This is the main lobby entrance. Upon arrival, the guest will receive her purchase order clip board and has the option to choose between four doors. Elements of snakes, roses, dropping flowers down a well and temptation are seen here. Below: This is the ‘Lust Room.” Red, soft, inviting materials are used to tempt the guest to stay a while.© Rebecca Jensen. 2013. 5. 5. ELEVATION DRAWING PRELIMINARY MATERIALS Lobby Lust Room Greed Room Pride Room Gluttony Room Sloth Room Above: This is the checkout area for when guests are ready to complete their Envy Room Wrath Room purchases. This is a space that summarizes the entire experience, where each cabinet door corresponds to the green door design seen walking through the site. There is also a snake figure weaving its way across each colored chair, representing the fact that the snake has “sin” wrapped around its “fingers.” The wall covering is a unique collage of different faces. This represents the fact that Checkout Area there is a bit of temptation in all of us. * Please note that not all samples are shown in the desired color. Please refer to the floor plan and notes for appropriate color application.© Rebecca Jensen. 2013.
