4. What is a file????
A file is a collection of data that is stored together.
Files can be stored on a hard drive, a floppy disc or a
cd.
Everything that a computer does is based on data
stored in files.
You can do lots of things with files- create them,
name them, save them, or delete them. Certain files
can even be looked at listened to and run.

In some ways, files are like television shows.
All TV shows have three things, just like computer
files….

6. In many computer system, files are named so that you
know what types of files it is just by looking at the
abbreviation behind the name.
A period is used to separate the name from the type,
like this: “name type”.

7. .PDF - The portable document format (PDF) is an open
standard for document exchange.
.HTM and html- HTM files serve the exact same purpose
as html files.
It is used to display and format text and images in web
browser.
.doc- Word processor document created by Microsoft
Word, a word processor include with, all versions of
Microsoft office; It may contain formatted text, tables,
images, graphs, charts, page formatting, and point setting.

8. .jpg- aka “jay peg”- compressed image format standerized
by the joint photographic experts group (JPEG) commonly
used for storing digital photos.
.gif- GIFS are common format for web graphic especially
small images and images that contain text, such as
navigation button. Image file that may contain up to 256
indexed colors (JPEG) (.jpg) images are better for showing
photos because they are not limited in the no of colors
display.
.bmp- also known as a “bump file”.

9. Microsoft and Adobe products usually exist in the
“program files”.
In most litigation cases, they may be critically
important.
This needs to be documented in the litigation
response plan.

10. A common and important data types in litigation
One costly mistake many companies make is to image and
entire hard drive of a server, computer or laptop, sends it
to a vender and say, “process these files”. That means
identify all the files on the hard drive, load a database with
information about the file and make the files and data
searchable for litigation. This is often a waste of money if
you include all system file and program files if they are not
relevant to your case.
