I know why the caged bird sings2

  1. 1. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) Poem by: Maya Angelou Presentation by: Rachel Goeken
  2. 2. Maya AngelouBlack woman that grew up in racist AmericaShe was about 40 when civil rights were put intoeffectWas like a free bird but always felt pull of cageWrote poem that even we can relateDidn’t have to be poor and black (same as okiesduring the Depression)Accomplished in writing, preformed in dance, writtenpoetry for the president, done well in dance
  3. 3. Poem The free bird leaps The free bird thinks of another breeze on the back of the wind and the trade winds soft though the sighing and floats downstream trees till the current ends and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright and dips his wings lawn in the orange sun rays and he names the sky his own and dares to claim the sky But a bird that stalks But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams down his narrow cage his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream can seldom see through his wings are clipped and his feet are tied his bars of rage so he opens his throat to sing his wings are clipped andhis feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing The cage bird sings The caged bird sings Red – Alliteration with a fearful trill with fearful trill Orange – Assonance of things unknown of the tings unknown Green – Rhyme but longed for still but longed for still Underlined – Imagery and his tune is heard and its tune is heard on the distant hill on the distant hill for the cage bird for the caged bird sings of freedom sings of freedom
  4. 4. Analysis of PoemAlliteration – the “S” sounds are repeated for effectAssonance – repeated “A” sound to make thesentence flowRhyme – used to created strong pictureImagery – used to feel the anger and frustration ofthe bird, to feel the free bird enjoying a meal, to hearthe caged bird screaming, and so we know it’s singingwill be heard
  5. 5. Analysis of PoemFigurative language – the caged bird is connected tohumans, the caged bird is trapped just like man canbe burdened by low expectations or oppression (nohope or chance of getting out of sad oppressedstate), the free bird opportunities are limitless justlike a privileged man can do anything and buyanything
