An SME is…
A businesswhose revenue,asset value and/or employeenumbers are below
certain defined thresholds.
The Federal Government has defined a revenue threshold of N25m for the
purposeof tax incentives. CBN considers N150m revenue threshold for SME
loan qualification. Some developedeconomies use employeethresholds of
250 or lessto define SMEs.

Your typical SMEs are the neighborhood retail store, single-outlet pharmacy,
restaurant, dental clinic, transporter, mini bakery, tailoring services,cement
dealer,auto-parts store, mechanic workshop, deliveryvan/bike, Salon, Uber
operator, Cobblerservice,Leather store, Boutique,Watch repair store, etc

Register as a merchant on an e-commerce site
Depending on your target market, this could be a local (Jumia,
Konga, etc) or global (Amazon, Alibaba) e-commerce site. To
build your own e-commerce site, use 3dcart or similar tools.
Upload product information
You need to create your product inventory and make it attractive
for online shoppers by providing as much details as possible.
Goodnews is you may not even need to keep the product
inventory e.g.imagine you want to resellslippersor Wagambari
hula producedby local artisans in the North, globally,you can
create a merchant account on Amazon and setup the product
details but only order from the producer in Kano/Maiduguri
when you get an online order. You will have to factor this to your
deliverytime information, so you don’t disappoint customers.
Setup your back-end delivery processes
Digital economy has memory and can be quite unforgiving so
you must setup your business systemto deliverreliability and
quality all the time. The good thing is the rating system could
also help your businessgrow of you maintain a high score.

Register your service (car, bike, artisan skills, accommodation)
Join a hailing service like Uber, Jumia Foods, Opay,Max.ng,

Stay active and available
Keep your status active/available so you can get job assignment.

Use marketing tools available on each social media service to do
targeted advertising so you can reach the right audience and
shorten the time from advertising to sales.
If you have a website (and you should),use search engine
optimization to make your site more visibleon searches.
Track your performance statistics for action
Track performance data that will enable you know the reach and
engagement of your digital advertising and the visits to your
website. Use the data to improve your optimization and
marketing efforts.

The Federal Government has defined a revenue threshold of N25m for the purposeof tax incentives. CBN considers N150m revenue threshold for SME loan qualification. Some developedeconomies use employeethresholds of 250 or lessto define SMEs. Example of SMEs… Your typical SMEs are the neighborhood retail store, single-outlet pharmacy, restaurant, dental clinic, transporter, mini bakery, tailoring services,cement dealer,auto-parts store, mechanic workshop, deliveryvan/bike, Salon, Uber operator, Cobblerservice,Leather store, Boutique,Watch repair store, etc What value do SMEs deliver? Most SMEs provide the following: 1. Distribution logistics (Outlets,deliveryservices) 2. Convenience (proximity, flexibility) 3. Services (hospitality, Consulting, Legal, etc) 4. Low-cost access to products (smaller consumer units, proximity) 5. Personalization (service experience more personal)

What capabilities do SMEs need to succeed 7 Efficiently distribute products/services SMEs need to be able to efficiently distribute products and services to reduce inventory cost and increase profitability. Acquire/Manage customers/employees SMEs need to reach more customers/employees and keep existing ones happy without burning their cash and going bankrupt. Build and Grow supply chain Efficiently source products and services from their suppliers. Optimize Operations Minimize the cost of operation to keep business profitability and cash flow healthy. Also keep records for compliance and to be bankable. Building these capabilities and running them effectively are the SME Challenges…
