Introduction to Computer

 1. 1. Rajesh P. Barnwal Information Technology Group CSIR-CMERI, Durgapur, INDIA
 2. 2. Why Computers?
 3. 3. What is Computer?

An electronic device that stores, retrieves, and processes data, and can be programmed with instructions.

A computer is composed of hardware and software, and can exist in a variety of sizes and configurations.

 4. 4. Computer consists of ? CRT/ TFT Display Keyboard Mouse “ The Box” CD-ROM Drive Floppy Disk Drive
 5. 5. Hardware and Software

The term hardware refers to the physical components of your computer such as the system unit, mouse, keyboard, monitor etc.

The software is the instructions that makes the computer work.

Software is held either on your computers hard disk, CD-ROM, DVD or on a diskette (floppy disk) and is loaded (i.e. copied) from the disk into the computers RAM (Random Access Memory), as and when required.

 6. 8. Motherboard
 7. 9. CPU (Central Processing Unit)

PCs primarily use microprocessors, which is called as CPU (Central Processing Unit) is normally an Intel Pentium (or equivalent) and it is one of the most important components within the computer.

It determines how fast the computer will run and is measured by its MHz/ GHz speed.

It is the CPU that performs all the calculations within the computer.

 8. 10. RAM (Random Access Memory)

Random Access Memory:

The main 'working' memory used by the computer.

When the operating system loads from disk when you first switch on the computer, it is copied into RAM.

 9. 11. HDD (Hard Disk Drive) Storage Drive: Hard disk drives are an internal, higher capacity drive which also stores the operating system which runs when you power on the computer.
 10. 12. Power Supply Power Supply: Power Supply is a device used to supply correct and required power to different parts of the computers
 11. 14. Floppy Diskettes Hard Drives CD ROM DVD
 12. 15. Input Device (Device to tell Computers what to do)
 13. 18. Operating System Software

The operating system is a special type of program that loads automatically when you start your computer.

The operating system allows you to use the advanced features of a modern computer without having to learn all the details of how the hardware works

The link between the hardware and you, the user

Makes the computer easy to use without having to understand bits and bytes!

Example – MsWindows, MsDOS, Linux etc.

 14. 19. Application Software

An application program is the type of program that you use once the operating system has been loaded.

Examples include word-processing programs, spreadsheets and databases

 15. 20. Other Examples of Computers
 16. 21. Laptop
 17. 22. Workstation
 18. 23. Mobile Computing Examples
 19. 25. Network

LAN - A LAN (Local Area Network) is a system whereby individual Computers are connected together within a company or organization

WAN - A WAN (Wide Area Network) as the name implies allows you to connect to other computers over a wider area (i.e. the whole world), also called Internet.

Website- The place where information is presented in a form, so that it can be accessed through Internet.

 20. 26. Uses of Network

Suppose, if ten people are working together in a department within an office, they may want to share information or resources by connecting their computers or devices.

In this way the office can have a single printer and all ten people can print to it.

In a similar way other devices such as modems or scanners can be shared.

Even more useful is the ability to share information when connected to a network.

 21. 27. Uses of Computers

Letter Typing/ Noting/ Drafting

Stock Control

Accounts / Payroll

Banks

ATMs

Education

Railway Reservation

Internet

E-Mail

Entertainment

Engineering Design/ Medical Diagnosis etc.

 22. 28. Do’s and Dont’s

Keep Computers in-

Good ventilation

Clean environment

Stable, vibration free surface

Avoid following with Computers-

Dust

Drinking and eating over the keyboard

Heat, Cold or Moisture

Don’t place objects on top of monitors.

Don’t place floppy disks near monitors.

 23. 29. Do’s and Dont’s

Always use Antivirus Software for keeping the Computer clean

Take Backup of your Computer Data on Floppy, CD, DVD etc. periodically.

Never use copied software

Don’t download illegal software etc. from Internet
