  • Folie 1 Good afternoon, my name is …… I would like to present you three examples of innovative pilotprojects….
  • Solar pumps for drinking water and irrigation

    1. 1. Examples of innovative pilotprojects in rural communities and periurban areas in Mali and HaitiProposals to increase and extend them sustainably by F.Wirz, Wirz Solar Gmbh, Sissach, Switzerland Solar waterpumping for drinkingwater Solar watertreatment and foodproduction for drinkingwater MALI MALI HAITI Foto Wirz Solar Gmbh 2009 Foto Trunz Watersystems 2010 Foto Wirz Solar Gmbh 2009
    2. 2. Project Vegetableproduction with „green packages“ for small farmers and women‘s associations in the periurban area of Bamako MALI F. Wirz, Wirz Solar Gmbh, Sissach, Switzerland Dr. Roger Michel, ERA Expériences Rurales Alternatives, Geneva, Switzerland Installation a solarpump system combined with a Djénné: womens association of vegetable growers, 2 Ha, dripirrigation system in Torokoro, Central Mali 2010 146 members, solarpump pumps 25m3/d , 2010 Foto Foto FW FW„Green packages“ help small farmers to produce more food with less costs. The two types of„green packages“are a combination of :1) Solar waterpumping systems (Type 1 subm.pumps, Type 2 solar motor for handpumps) (CC) comb.2) Dripirrigation* and/or by hand to use precious water more sustainably (CC)3) Organic agriculture to produce more vegetables with less external input (fuel, chem.fertilizers) (CC)4) Organic agriculture to increase soilfertility and carbonstorage (CC)5) planning, trainings, monitoring, marketing Green package „light“ gpl: 1+2+5 solarpump + dripirrigation/handirr. + 5 Full „green package“ fgp: 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 gpl + organic agriculture + 5

Green Vegetable Production Projects in Westafrica and HaitiResults:1) Total 140 Ha (1,4 Mio m2) vegetable/fruit perimeters with solar pumpsystems and dripirrigation (or by hand) 124 Ha gpl including a2) Regional Training Center for Organic Farming and Solar Irrigation in Kalassa (Mali) and3) 8 startup organic farmingperimeters in periurban areas in 5 countries Mali, Guinee, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Haiti (8 fgp‘s , 16 Ha)Beneficiaries :Up to 14‘000 beneficiary families (estimated 100 fam/perimeter = 70‘000direct beneficiaries plus consumers of vegetables and fruit)Total investment 2012 – 2016MALI and regional EXTENSION 2‘236‘000 CHF 2‘430‘435 U$Investment per m2 1,6 CHF = 1,75 U$Investment per beneficary 32 CHF = 34,8 U$PPP ? >> Financing has still to be discussed between projectpartners.More informations : wirzsolar@bluewin.ch
    7. 7. Project 3 HAITI Solarpumping and Solar watertreatmentSolarpump Pilotproject (South-South-Transfer/Capacitybuilding Project Mali > Haiti) Phase 1 Pilot- and Testphase Sept 2011 – April 2012 1) Tests and installation of 10 recently developed swiss solar motors for handpumps Type 2 * (see fotos below) 2) Training of local technicians for installation, maintenance and repairs 3) Joint development of a management module for waterpoints with solar pumps with the haitian national waterauthorities DINEPA (Direction Nationale pour l‘Eau et l‘Assainissement) Phase 2 EXTENSION >> integrated into Project 2 Extension Project „green packages“ (included 70 x Type 2 pumps) First tests of solar driven motor for Mark II handpumps Nov 11 in Leogane, Haiti Fotos FW
    8. 8. Planned Pilotproject 3 Haiti 2012 : 20 solarwaterkioskswith solarpumps and solar watertreatment unitsCrucial problem in Haiti : huge lack of good quality water (drinking water) for the populations.Water has to be treated nearly everywhere to become drinking water. There is an urgent need for hundreds ofwatertreatment units !>> still high risk of cholera…!!Such urgently needed solar watertreatment units can be integrated into existing and new waterkiosks. These helpto diminish the very expensive and ongoing watertrucking and improve waterdelivery with precious drinking-water from boreholes considerably.Wirz Solar Gmbh is presently planning a project for the installation (and evtl. operating) of 20 waterkiosks inHaiti. The amount for the initial investment is approxmatively CHF 1‘200‘000.And we are looking for financial partners… 7 solar watertreatment units (ultrafiltration) have already been installed 2010 in existing and/or new waterkiosks. They sell drinkingwater in haitian periurban areas as e.g. Cabaret, Jacmel . The planned project foresees 20 new solar waterkiosks preferably in urban locations with no electrical grid. These waterkiosks may also provide other services apart from drinkingwater (e.g. batteriecharging etc) Solar watertreatment unit in A prototype businessplan has still to be adapted to the Haiti Haitian situation, discussion of financing ongoing
    9. 9. Summary :Three Projects with great potential to be extended and multiplied in many periurbanand urban areas :• “green packages“ for green agricultural foodproduction (fruit and vegetables = „green gold“, example Mali)• solar waterkiosks for drinkingwater (example Haiti)Wirz Solar Gmbh / Solsuisse Mali and ERA, Geneva have a lot of experience and a network of partners to implement and monitor such projects !
