  3. 3. 2.<br />In 1895, the German drug company Bayer marketed diacetylmorphine under the trademark name X.The name was derived from a Greek word because of its perceived effects upon a user. Morphine at the time was a popular recreational drug. From 1898 through to 1910, X was marketed as a non-addictive morphine substitute and cough suppressant. Bayer even marketed the drug as a cure for morphine addiction. Later, as with Aspirin, Bayer lost some of its trademark rights to X under the 1919 Treaty of Versailles following the German defeat in World War I, because of which X ceased to be a trademark in some countries and became a generic name.<br />

Being a fan of Tom Swift, he named it after the novel whose cover is shown on the right. The name was later modified by the addition of the letter ‘A’ to make it easy for pronunciation. <br />
