  2. 2. Jenny asks…A male fertility test? Cost and what happens? My husband and I have been having unprotected sex for the last 3 years. We are trying to getpregnant, but obviously to no avail. I am worried it is all because of me, because my cycleshave been messed up since i got off the depo provera shot. But, he recently told me that it could be him. He remembered that when he was 10 or 11 he fellfrom a tree and when he did it busted open his testicles. He didn’t elaborate any, but i assumehe meant that it just ripped it a little. So, I figure a good place to start, as far as having a baby goes… is for him to get a fertility test.We dont have any insurance, so where would be a good place to start? How much would this cost? And what about treatment?Would planned parenthood provide these service? And what is involved in order to check it on males?Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:If you live less than a 30-minute drive from the lab, he can produce a sample at home. Heshould not have ejaculated for 2 or 3 days before giving the sample, but the wait should be nolonger than 7 days. Be sure to use a sample cup they give you at the lab so that it can belabelled with his name etc beforehand. But if you’re going to have tests done, I’d be sure tohave a blood test yourself. The three biggest issues are FSH and Estradiol (blood test on CD3)and progesterone (test on CD21). Also, if your cycles are wacky, consider using OPKs. You canget cheap test strips from early-pregnancy-tests.com. They have free, super-fast shipping andthe strips work out at about 49 cents each. You’ll use about 10 of them each month, so that’snot too high a price to pay to know when you’re ovulating. Good luck! 2/6
  3. 3. Lizzie asks…How much do at home fertility tests cost? And would it work whileon birth control ?Hello all,First of all, I’m not pregnant or trying . Believe it or not, I’m even a virgin by choice. Anyway, Iam 19, and was diagnosed with the condition PCOS , polycystic ovarian syndrome when I was2 months shy of my 18th birthday. It causes infertility, and makes conceiving , and carrying out apregnancy full term very hard. Through tests, my doctors decided I MIGHT have the problem. They said I had no cysts in my ovaries, but because of other things (my symptoms, hormonetest results, blood test results, and family history of diabetes) they said I probably do have thecondition. I hate knowing I won’t know if I’m infertile for a long time, till I start trying for kidsyears from now. I’ve been considering lately taking a at home infertility test, to see if I am fertileor not how much do they generally cost? I saw online I can get one at jewel osco or walgreens(those would be the ideal places for me to be able to get one at. I live about 5 blocks or so awayfrom a jewel osco, and 7 or 8 blocks from a walgreens). But the ones I found online sold thereare a little pricy, around almost $30. Since I’m 19 , and don’t have a whole lot of money, I’dlike a cheaper one, that still works well. Also, I will be living with my parents for another monthor two (going back to college in late august) so I would also like it to be small and easy to hide.My parents know about the condition, but are taking it very lightly, and insist I will have noproblem having children in the future . Also, I am on yazmin birth control to treat my conditionand preserve what is left of my fertility. Would the test still work? 3/6
  4. 4. Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:Those fertility tests are a fairly new thing. There are only a couple of brands on the market, andthey do cost about $30.I’d probably save my money if I were you, though. The only thing these over-the-counter testsdo is tell you the level of your follicle-stimulating hormone (fsh), and an estimation of whetheryou have a good egg reservoir (and at only 19, you probably do). They do NOT tell you anythingabout the state of your ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus. So you might only be duplicatingsomething your doctor has already done, and you’ll end up not knowing anything new.I don’t THINK the birth control would interfere with it. You have to take that test on the third dayof your period, and at no other time, so you’d be on your inactive week. There is no reason to think you’ll never have children. My mother-in-law had PCOS, andobviously I’m married to one of the sons she had in spite of the condition, and there surewasn’t much in the way of treatment options back then.Mandy asks…how much do ovualtion/fertility tests cost in stores?like home tests you do yourself to see when you are ovulating or most fertile. and where did youbuys yours from and how much? has anyone even got one from walmart? how much? how doyou test with them? 4/6
  5. 5. Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:I was at Walgreens yesterday and all of the tests were under $20. Varied between 3 and 7 testsper package and most included a pregancy test. If you want the meter, it’s around $100. Themeter is really best for folks going through infertility treatments–although with the cost of testsdown, it may not be the best deal going anymore.Lisa asks…How much does it cost to have fertility tests privately??I was referred to have my fallopian tubes checked on the nhs and they havent been able to fitme in two months on the trot now so I want to go private, does anyone know how much it costsjust for the tests please?Pregnancy Advisor’s answers:It would depend on what kind of tests they are wanting to do. I would also recommend checkingwith someone at NHS to find out who you need to contact to find out the prices for going private.I don’t live in the UK but am somewhat familiar with the system there because of friends fromthere. 5/6
  6. 6. Susan asks… fertility testing? How much does it cost for both people to get a fertility check in australia?? Pregnancy Advisor’s answers: Fertility testing for the male is relatively inexpensive and can be done by his primary care doctor. Women have more plumbing and thus more complicated. Start with him going to the doctor and he will have to provide a “sample” for analysis. Rule that our first. Powered by Yahoo!
