  6. 8. “ The League of Nations was an absolute joke in the 1920s.” Discuss [10 marks] Level 1 [1-3] Simplistic, generalised answer. Lacking in structure. Explains the setting up of the LON – Wilson’s role etc. Limited analysis on the main points. Can Agree/Disagree/ state a balanced argument. Level 2 [3-6] Agrees with the quote. More structure than L1. Discusses setting up of the LON. Mentions the fact that the USA doesn’t get involved. Briefly highlights problems for the LON in 1920s Level 3 [5-9] Disagrees with the quote. Looks at the border disputes that were successful. Examines the role in fighting poverty, disease and injustice. Examines Locarno Treaties/Geneva Protocol. Level 4 [8-10] Balanced answer , probably siding on the disagreement argument. Examines the Border disputes in the 1920s – evaluating which ones were successful – and whether the LON could have done more. Looks at the role in fighting poverty, disease and injustice. Examines Locarno Treaties/Geneva Protocol. May mention the Wall St Crash. May touch upon the failures in the 1930s. Historiography. MUST have a supported CONCLUSION, if not then L3 max. NB – If nothing on Wilson’s role in setting up the LON , lack of US involvement then max L2 1,250 words maximum
